The Brassica Growers Association are backing the Love Your Greens campaign and would love to hear your DCs favourite dishes which use a brassica vegetable, which includes: broccoli, kale, swede, Brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, spring greens and cabbages [don’t worry, some of us here at MNHQ didn't know what they were either!]

Here’s what they say, “Greens are great and we want everyone to enjoy them as much as us! As well as tasting great, they’re really versatile and full of goodness. We can’t wait to see the delicious dishes you come up with – it’s time to inspire the nation to love their greens”

So, what’s your DCs favourite dish which includes one (or more!) of the brassica vegetables? Can you share the recipe with us? A vegetable curry perhaps? Maybe a delicious Spanish omelette? Or possibly just a classic bubble and squeak recipe which they particularly like? How about a fab coleslaw using your food processor? The Brassica Growers Association are hoping to launch a recipe book next year and are looking for some inspiration from Mumsnetters and their DCs so feel free to add whatever recipes you may have!

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Standard Insight T&Cs apply.

Thanks and good luck

We make broccoli, cauliflower and cheese soup, its yummy and my daughter loves it!

Laineyflo · 19/07/2015 07:49

Roast dinners with lots of broccoli, they're not so keen on cauliflower. They love to put their broccoli on top of their yorkshire puds and create a boat!

createbeauty · 19/07/2015 07:51

Kale crisps and sweet pototo and carrot fries as he doesn't know they're healthy!

In all the DC's many many playdates I've never had a child over who won't eat plain broccoli. The DC will have it with pasta and cheese or olive oil for the world's simplest supper. DS is a terror for Brussels sprouts and will nick them from other people's plates given half a chance.

In terms of actual recipes we do Monday Night Supper if we've had a roast on Sunday. Shred a cabbage of any sort - ideally a dark green one. Stir fry in a wok with shredded meat taken from the remains of the roast. Add a mug of gravy from the roast and perhaps a glass/splash of red wine depending on whether you're feeding adults or children. Simmer briefly. Eat with bread.

We also do a whole cauliflower in florets with bacon and crème fraiche as a quick supper.

We eat sooo much brassica - they're practically the only veg that all my dc will eat!

Mostly we just steam, boil or microwave.

Kale crisps - especially seasoned with smoked paprika or with zaatar.

Roast cauliflower - halve or quarter florets, toss in fat and herbs (again, smoked paprika or zaatar are the best) and roast in a hot oven until browned.

Swede chips or roasties - use exactly as potatoes.

Swede and celeriac soups. I make a basic velouté and freeze, then dress it up for different soups. It has a wonderfully buttery flavour, without any butter! even better if you do add butter. My fave is curried, but dd likes it as a veg soup, almost a creamy minestrone, with added peas, sliced carrots, tinned tomatoes, parsley, bay leaf and black pepper.

we like pasta with broccoli and bacon

I fry some bacon lardons in olive oil until crispy, then add garlic and dried chilli flakes. Add steamed broccoli to this, and mix so the brocolli gets a good coating of the garlicky bacon, and then stir through pasta. It only takes as long as the pasta takes to cook.

Cauliflower rice, or even using the cauliflower as a pizza base. The Children don't have a clue what they are eating is so healthy!

glennamy · 19/07/2015 11:29

My DD just loves cabbage, white or red, raw or cooked. She will have a side plate of it, with some virgin olive oil, if the meal does not suit. She particularly loves it in a stir fry alongside bamboo shoots at the moment.

hoppingalongsingingasong · 19/07/2015 11:42

We're big veggie curry fans here. Cauli, kale and chickpea is delicious.

nitsparty · 19/07/2015 12:26

Cauliflower is great unless you just boil it senseless and plonk it on a plate. Who would have thought it was such a close friend to mashed potato?
My favourite way is to rice your cauliflower, add smoked paprika to taste and stir in an egg (or just egg white if you're watching calories) to bind. Bake. This makes a pizza base or you can cover it with cheese and cut it into fingers and munch.

hannonle · 19/07/2015 13:13

We tend to have broccoli and brussels as a plain side to a meal, but they do love cauliflower cheese as a dish too.

Ethan260908 · 19/07/2015 13:33

My son likes my chinesse stir fry which basically has brocoli, cauli & Kale plus the usual assortment of onions/carrots/garlic etc etc. The vivd colours help I guess make the dish look appealing in the first instance, we even eat it cold as left overs

spillyobeans · 19/07/2015 14:22

Broccoli cheese -

Make a roux and then add milk to thicken. Add lots of cheddar, some mustard, salt and pepper and some chopped parsley and chives. Add broccoli chopped up and bake in oven

tamalyn1 · 19/07/2015 14:41

my children love my sunday dinners, they love the swede/carrots all mashed up and i always do brocolli and cauliflower, sometimes with added cheese

happysouls · 19/07/2015 14:46

Pesto pasta with broccoli is a firm favourite and has been for years! So quick and easy, and cheap and tasty too!

Marg2k8 · 19/07/2015 14:58

Haha - I'm glad you didn't know what they were either. My favourite is broccoli and cauliflower with a cheese sauce.

PeaceOfWildThings · 19/07/2015 15:31

I have 2 recipes for you!

Kale soup

Sauté finely chopped onions and garlic. Pour in a pint of vegetable stock, add a bag of finely chopped kale and a chopped washed potato, some spices and season to taste. Simmer until potato is soft and mushy. Serve with hot bread rolls.

broccoli quiche

Blind bake pastry cases to desired quiche size and shape. Par boil broccoli florets, cut to the same height as the side of the quiche.
Mix 50ml Creme fraiche with 2 large eggs, add a half teaspoon each of nutmeg, Paprika, ground coriander and ginger, and a grind of black pepper. Arrange the broccoli florets as a forest within the pastry case, pour in the seasoned custard to settle between the 'trunks' of broccoli, and top with grated cheddar and a little dusting of paprika and optional chilli powder. Bake again for 20-30 minutes in a moderate oven, until custard is no longer runny. Serve hot or cold.

freefan · 19/07/2015 15:46

My daughter is just loving juicing just now and I find I can include Brocolli in a lot of the juices without her noticing, also adding broccolli to soups along with cauliflower gives it added texture

kaycm25 · 19/07/2015 16:41

My kids love a chicken risotto with peppers, onions and peas.

MakeTeaNotWar · 19/07/2015 18:06

The kids love broccoli and will way mounds of it just steamed or boiled plain and simple. We only have Brussels sprouts at Xmas, fried with lardons and chestnuts & they wolf it down

informer365 · 19/07/2015 18:11

We love a cheats Cauli N Broc cheese!!

scabbycat · 19/07/2015 19:42

Our favourite family dinner with brassicas that we all enjoy eating is spring greens mixed with boiled bacon and a swede and potato mash. I steam the spring greens with a little water and a knob of butter and then mix in chopped boiled bacon. I serve with a swede and potato mash. Yum!

julieef · 19/07/2015 19:48

broccoli one calls them trees

samosh22 · 19/07/2015 19:57

we love smoothies of all kind

empire11 · 19/07/2015 20:18

We all love bubble and squeak. It's a real treat, with either really good sausages from the local farm shop, or fish fingers.
