The team at Vision Direct would love to hear how pregnancy has impacted on your contact lens & glasses wearing habits.

Vision Direct say: “As the UK’s biggest online provider of contact lenses and eye care products, Vision Direct is here to help you enjoy comfortable, healthy vision for less. Our fast delivery, low prices and 7 days a week UK-based customer service are all designed to make things a little easier to manage during the busiest times. Pregnant women often find their eyes change due to shifting hormones and metabolic rates or water-retention (no one’s favourite pregnancy symptom!) We’re always here to help should you need to change your lenses, and you can return them quibble-free."

How has your pregnancy altered the way you wear glasses or contact lenses? Did you find that your eyes were drier and if so, did you try eye drops? Maybe you invested in a new pair of glasses or changed the type of contacts you wear, or perhaps nothing much changed for you.

Share your thoughts – whether your eyesight changed or not Vision Direct want to hear from you; even if you don’t wear glasses or contact lenses.

Everyone who posts a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a Kindle Fire HDX tablet and a £50 Amazon voucher for filling it with apps, games, movies & music!

Please note that Vision Direct may use your comments – anon of course- on their MN pages, social media or possibly elsewhere; only post if you’re happy with this.

I didn't notice any changes to my eyesight when pregnant with either ds1 or ds2.

However, over the last 2 or 3 years I have noticed my eyesight isn't anywhere as good as it used to be although it's still not bad enough to need glasses (which I suspect will change fairly soon!). I put it down to getting older (mid 40s) and getting an iphone which means I can spend much more time snatching a sneaky peak at MNet on it. But I reckon that it's probably spending too much time staring at a small screen that has done the damage (as a knock on effect of having kids!) rather than any changes due to being pregnant...

I had my first pair of glasses after my first child but did not connect my eyesight problems with my pregnancy until reading the thread. I suffered with migraines and visual disturbances through subsequent pregnancies. I've never worn contact lenses due to dry eyes. It might be a good idea to offer free eye checks for pregnant women. I'm sure I had free dental work during and just after pregnancies, but it was some time ago so I'm not sure of how it stands now.

Orangeisthenewbanana · 27/05/2015 19:14

I had no idea that pregnancy could affect your eyesight! I am blind as the proverbial bat and have problems with dry eyes when I wear contacts anyway, so am used to using the eye drops when I have them in. Currently 13 weeks pg, so will keep an eye on it now!

IAmAPaleontologist · 27/05/2015 19:52

Yes my eyes changed. Not so much in my first pregnancy but with subsequent ones I noticed a definite difference and have needed new glasses. I also stopped being able to wear lenses during pregnancy number 2, I tried a few different things and different lenses but nothing worked. I tried to go back to them afterwards but failed miserably. I am now resigned to wonky glasses, although hopeful that since the smallest is now 3 the glasses will get less wonky from being attacked by small children!

littlebeps · 27/05/2015 21:12

I've worn glasses for headaches caused by eye strain for years but only needed them when I was tired. My headaches got worse so I went to the optician having my daughter. My prescription increased significantly, I wear my glasses pretty much constantly now.

ARV1981 · 27/05/2015 21:20

I can't tell for sure if it's pregnancy or just the passage of time but my prescription has gone from -5.75 to -6.00 (I'm blind in my left eye so that's just the right one).

Seriouslyffs · 27/05/2015 21:37

Yes! I went from only needing glasses for driving/ cinema/ theatre to all the time during my second pregnancy.

Tellhimyournamepike · 27/05/2015 22:28

Yes! I thought it was just me. I went for an eye test when pregnant and was told eyes can change shape a little. I could do with new specs now I think....

Belmo · 27/05/2015 22:42

I got slightly more short sighted, and bought my first pair of glasses which I never wear as I can never ever find them!

BasinHaircut · 28/05/2015 07:01

I went to the opticians for a contact lens check just after I first found out I was pregnant and the vision in my right eye had got 4 steps worse. Id only had my eye test a few weeks before and there had been no change for a year. The optician asked if there has been any change in my health and so he ended up being only the second person who knew I was pregnant!

My vision returned to normal after pregnancy but I now have mild cataracts at 32! Not sure if that's pregnancy related though.

Blondiemama · 28/05/2015 07:26

I had very dry eyes when pregnant and had to carry eye drops to moisten my contact lenses. My eye sight did get marginally worse too but not bad enough to change my prescription. Even though my eyes were dry, I found my contacts more comfortable than my glasses!

Issie339 · 28/05/2015 08:32

I went from not needing glasses at all to needing them for reading and computer work. I only noticed when I returned to work shortly after having DD but I'm certain it came on as a result of my pregnancy, quite a sharp deterioration.

kungfupidge · 28/05/2015 09:06

my vision remained the same in both my pregnancies however after my second son i started getting headaches so i visited an optician and it turns out i need a prescription for reading so whether that was due to pregnancy i don't know xx

Yes, I am pregnant again now and find it impossible to wear my contact lenses, which I found happened last time. My eyes get sooooo dry and itchy! I haven't tried any eyedrops though as it is just as easy for me to wear my glasses.

My eyesight gets worse with each pregnancy as well, I need a new prescription after pregnancy as well. It is expensive as my eyesight is so poor I need the ultra thin lenses or else it looks like I am wearing a pair of milk bottles for glasses Grin

StickChildNumberTwo · 28/05/2015 12:57

I had my eyes tested when I was pregnant with my daughter (mainly as a useful thing to fit in before life changed forever!) and they were the same as usual. They hadn't changed when I had them retested two years later, so it seems I'm lucky and not affected (although as I don't wear lenses I probably wouldn't notice things like drier eyes).

Penguinandminipenguin · 28/05/2015 15:08

I'm pregnant at the moment and have dry eyes. I can only wear my contact lenses for a few hours at a time now as my eyes dry out, so I'm wearing my glasses more often.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 28/05/2015 15:15

I found contact lenses more uncomfortable during my last pregnancy. I had been wearing them for about 15 years, but my eyes just felt gritty and they didn't seem to fit as well so I started wearing my glasses all the time, this was in 2001.
A couple of years ago I went to get laser eye surgery only to be told I wasn't suitable. I was also told that as my astigmatism is quite bad I wouldn't be able to have daily or monthly contacts. I didn't want the longer term gas permeable ones so I've stayed with my glasses ever since. I'd love to go back to using them sometimes for going out or rainy dog walks when glasses are completely impractical

magstn88 · 28/05/2015 17:01

I am currently pregnant and wear my contacts for about 12 to 14 hours. I have noticed that my eyes are dry and contacts feel more uncomfortable. when I wear my glasses to give my eyes a rest, I get a strange pain in the back of my neck, which leads to a huge headache. Out of the two choices, I rather suffer the dry eye and blurry vision, because the headaches are unbearable!!!

slithytove · 28/05/2015 17:04

Yes, my first pregnancy they deteriorated by a full point per eye. I went from -3/-4 to -4/-5.

It was very noticeable as well. 2 more pregnancies followed with no changes.

sharond101 · 28/05/2015 17:26

No change for me

APinkHardHat · 28/05/2015 18:29

Contact lens wearer of 15+ years.

Prescription changed during first pregnancy- my optician said this was common- usually in his experience eyes got worse but in a few (lucky) cases it actually improved!

My Eyes were much drier and he recommended eye drops, however no pharmacy would actually sell me any on account of being pregnant!

Second pregnancy (currently 26 weeks) and no changes to report so far- however am wearing glasses more than contact lenses this time around.

gandering · 28/05/2015 20:17

First pregnancy vision actually improved slightly, but went back to normal afterwards.
This time, am 11w pregnant and it's awful. Contacts feel like they aren't fitting. Vision is crap with glasses or contacts. Don't know if it's the extreme tiredness or dehydration having a knock on effect.
And I had to cancel last weeks optician check up - horrendous morning sickness had me tethered to the toilet.

Takver · 28/05/2015 20:28

No changes at all - have worn the same prescription for the last 20 odd years.

GloGirl · 28/05/2015 22:28

I didn't notice any change. I am an occasional glasses wearer. Fascinating that it can make a difference!
