The team at Vision Direct would love to hear how pregnancy has impacted on your contact lens & glasses wearing habits.

Vision Direct say: “As the UK’s biggest online provider of contact lenses and eye care products, Vision Direct is here to help you enjoy comfortable, healthy vision for less. Our fast delivery, low prices and 7 days a week UK-based customer service are all designed to make things a little easier to manage during the busiest times. Pregnant women often find their eyes change due to shifting hormones and metabolic rates or water-retention (no one’s favourite pregnancy symptom!) We’re always here to help should you need to change your lenses, and you can return them quibble-free."

How has your pregnancy altered the way you wear glasses or contact lenses? Did you find that your eyes were drier and if so, did you try eye drops? Maybe you invested in a new pair of glasses or changed the type of contacts you wear, or perhaps nothing much changed for you.

Share your thoughts – whether your eyesight changed or not Vision Direct want to hear from you; even if you don’t wear glasses or contact lenses.

Everyone who posts a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a Kindle Fire HDX tablet and a £50 Amazon voucher for filling it with apps, games, movies & music!

Please note that Vision Direct may use your comments – anon of course- on their MN pages, social media or possibly elsewhere; only post if you’re happy with this.

Thanks,

I never needed glasses until I was pregnant. Now my eyesight is awful. It could be a coincidence of course.

missorinoco · 26/05/2015 16:02

Intriguing.
I have worn lenses for years, and didn't notice any change in my eyesight with any of my pregnancies. I hadn't heard eyesight could be affected by pregnancy before now.

MissTwister · 26/05/2015 16:03

I just had my annual contact lens check up and all is fine so no vision changes for me. Eyes have not been drier either - one of the one pregnancy symptoms I've not had!

InAndOfMyself · 26/05/2015 16:29

I had watery eyes during my pregnancies and stopped wearing my contact lenses as a result. Within a week of my babies being born my eyes were no longer watery. My eyesight didn't seem to change though.

ekt55 · 26/05/2015 16:30

I didn't have my eyes tested during pregnancy and didn't really notice a change. I did have them tested when my DD was approximately 1 year old and had an increased astigmatism in one eye so maybe it did change during pregnancy but I can't be sure.

Pregnant again (24 weeks atm) and so far I haven't noticed any problems or changes.

BikeRunSki · 26/05/2015 16:41

I have been fairly shortsighted since I was a child and was about -6 (R) and -8 (L) and slightly astigmatic before I had children. My left eye improved by half a dioptre and my right eye by about quarter of a dioptre in each pregnancy (2) and this improvement has remained (same optician before, during and after children), my youngest child is 3.5.

I wore a mix or contacts and glasses before I had children. I stopped during pregnancy, as I was so poorly, wearing glasses was just easier. I have solely worn glasses ever since - a mix of convenience and comfort when I have sore eyes and a headaches from a sleepless night! I have however started to choose sturdier frames since each child has snapped at least one pair of my specs as a baby!

Smcgettigan79 · 26/05/2015 16:54

My eyes were about the only things that didn't change when I was pregnant - Yay - go eyes!

nippey · 26/05/2015 16:59

I've not been able to wear my contacts since about week 12 (now 36 weeks) they just felt uncomfortable and not right in my eyes! Glasses have been okay but I find my eyes get tired quickly.

CMOTDibbler · 26/05/2015 18:36

I didn't have any vision changes when pg - I wear glasses though, rather than contacts

ButterflyOfFreedom · 26/05/2015 18:37

I have had 2 DC now aged 2.5 & 7 months. I never noticed any specific eye sight changes during pregnancy though my eye sight has got ever so slightly worse in the past couple of years. I now wear glasses for driving & watching TV. I just presumed it was due to getting older.

My sister-in-law ' s eyes deteriorated quite badly in her pregnancy. She was left with blurred vision for a few months after giving birth though it then corrected itself.

I didn't realise eyes could be affected during pregnancy / birth.

DingleberryFinn · 26/05/2015 18:56

I used to wear contacts but had to give up as my tear ducts stopped producing as many tears during pregnancy (or so I was told) which made my eyes too dry to tolerate them. I tried eye drops but they were messy and needed doing too frequently. Post pregnancy I can't stand to wear the lenses for more than about 6 hours or they irritate my eyes, which makes it a bit pointless when my working day is longer than that!

Fillybuster · 26/05/2015 19:12

I don't think my eyesight actually changed during pregnancy, but my eyes became very dry and I ended up barely wearing contact lenses all the way through all 3 pgs.

Like some of the other posters I tried eye drops to help the problem, but although they did make some difference they were far too messy and inconvenient to be a proper solution.

Very frustrating, especially in the summer when I wanted to be able to wear sunglasses (and I can't drive half blind!) In the end the simplest thing to do was to buy a cheap frame and some reasonably cheap prescription tinted lenses.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 26/05/2015 19:56

I wear daily disposables and didn't notice any difference in my vision when I was pregnant. I had an eye check during my first pregnancy, which didn't reveal any changes either.
I thought my eyes felt slightly drier and tired earlier in the evening, but I was working in a hospital (dry environment) and had a longer commute whilst pregnant, so that probably contributed.

nenehooo · 26/05/2015 19:57

I had my eyes lasered in 2009. I noticed that I was struggling to see long distance during pregnancy in 2012, and last year I got my eyes tested, and I'm very slightly short sighted again.only a prescription of -0.5 in both eyes, and I now wear glasses to watch TV and drive at night.

ovumahead · 26/05/2015 20:17

My eyesight became noticeably worse during my second pregnancy. I often found myself squinting at things I could see perfectly well before! Very frustrating, especially having to buy new glasses. And the headaches I endured before I managed to do that.

thewomaninwhitefluffybunnyears · 26/05/2015 20:17

I can't say that I noticed any difference at all to be honest. Not very informative but the facts!

Abodago81 · 26/05/2015 20:34

Yes, eyesight worsened and I got bad headaches.
I barely wore contacts at that time as my eyes were so dry.

pukkapine · 26/05/2015 20:38

Yes mine really did and it surprised me and I wasn't expecting it. My astigmatism in one eye got noticeably worse and hasn't improved - long term contact lens wearer but now I can't seem to get a good fit/vision in that eye (5.5 yrs since last pregnancy). The other thing that got noticeably worse was my night vision. My eyes now take AGES to adjust to low light and never as much as before.

Really irritated by it!

wheat32 · 26/05/2015 20:50

I think I might be going against the grain here- my eyesight actually got marginally better.
I've worn contact lenses for 20+ years and my eyesight has become progressively worse every year. I had an eye test towards the end of my first pregnancy where my optician stated my eyesight was better than the previous year. I am pregnant again with number 2 and will be due a test 6 weeks before due date so will be interested to find out if the same happens this time!!

Cherrybellyboo · 26/05/2015 20:57

I had never needed glasses, and during my pregnancy I saw no difference that I remember. Soon after birth I started getting headaches, I didn't think it was my eyes because I could still see. Eventually I got an eye test and it showed I have astigmatism. The optician said breastfeeding and hormone changes from no longer being pregnant could have had an impact on my eyes.

I didn't wear glasses before having children. I noticed my eye sight deteriorating slightly during each pregnancy, but didn't bother to get them checked until dc6 was almost 1 and I couldn't see much in the distance Blush I am now short sighted and I'm sure it's because of my pregnancies

SaltySeaBird · 26/05/2015 21:52

I've had glasses for being short sighted since 2001 and my eyesight hasn't changed since my first prescription. I wear them for driving but rarely outside of this unless I am watching something with subtitles.

The only thing that has changed is it's a lot harder having a sight test with a toddler in tow. I had one two weeks ago and it was a nightmare, there was no door on the consulting room and she kept trying to make a bolt for it down the corridor ...

Itscurtainsforyou · 26/05/2015 22:00

I've not worn contact lenses since my first pregnancy 5 years ago. Just can't, feels very uncomfortable. However, I can live with that, it's the background retinopathy that I've just been diagnosed with that I'm more concerned about. Hmm

smokedgarlic · 26/05/2015 22:00

My eyesight has been oddly blurred throughout my third pregnancy never noticed anything with my previous two . The optician tested my eyesight and the change was so minimal my prescription was not altered . I am hoping it will settle down after the birth . I have worn contact lenses for 23 years with no issues .
