The team at Vision Direct would love to hear how pregnancy has impacted on your contact lens & glasses wearing habits.

Vision Direct say: “As the UK’s biggest online provider of contact lenses and eye care products, Vision Direct is here to help you enjoy comfortable, healthy vision for less. Our fast delivery, low prices and 7 days a week UK-based customer service are all designed to make things a little easier to manage during the busiest times. Pregnant women often find their eyes change due to shifting hormones and metabolic rates or water-retention (no one’s favourite pregnancy symptom!) We’re always here to help should you need to change your lenses, and you can return them quibble-free."

How has your pregnancy altered the way you wear glasses or contact lenses? Did you find that your eyes were drier and if so, did you try eye drops? Maybe you invested in a new pair of glasses or changed the type of contacts you wear, or perhaps nothing much changed for you.

Share your thoughts – whether your eyesight changed or not Vision Direct want to hear from you; even if you don’t wear glasses or contact lenses.

Everyone who posts a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a Kindle Fire HDX tablet and a £50 Amazon voucher for filling it with apps, games, movies & music!

Please note that Vision Direct may use your comments – anon of course- on their MN pages, social media or possibly elsewhere; only post if you’re happy with this.

Thanks,
MNHQ

I don't currently wear glasses or contact lenses and haven't found my vision affected in any of my pregnancies, thankfully! I'm curious though whether any change to vision in pregnancy is likely to be temporary (as I imagine it would be if caused by water retention) or if it can be longer lasting?

whitbyranger · 29/05/2015 13:11

I had no perceptible change in my eyesight during my two pregnancies.

Pregnancy made my eyesight worse and I have needed a retest after both pregnancies. Now I need to look into contacts because my toddlers keeps getting his hands on my glasses and snapping them in half!

Emz1989 · 29/05/2015 14:46

I phoned my midwife recently regarding visual disturbances, as I had heard these can be a symptom of preeclampsia. However, my blood pressure and everything else was ok so the visual disturbances were just that...
I think tiredness has a lot to do with it, I feel like my eyeballs are 'heavy' and I get headaches if I concentrate for any length of time (reading, watching TV etc) and I am 36 weeks pregnant.
I have reading glasses and am hoping that after the baby is born, I will go back to just needing them occasionally as I did before!

LuckyBluie · 29/05/2015 15:26

No changes at all - have worn the same prescription for years Smile

sweir1 · 29/05/2015 16:20

My eyes have never been better

phillie1 · 29/05/2015 17:28

Didn't notice any change at all, apart from tiredness, which made me wear glasses more than normal, compared to my contact lenses

Uzma01 · 29/05/2015 18:11

I'm going through my third pregnancy and have to say I've not noticed any change in my vision in that time. I've been wearing glasses since I was 11 - of course my eyesight has gotten worse over the last 25 years or so, but I don't think I can blame pregnancy for that.

feefeegabor · 29/05/2015 18:29

I was lucky, my eyesight didn't change during pregnancy - however, it has got a lot worse since!

MrsWooster · 29/05/2015 18:38

Definitely. Eyes were lasered in 2008 and were 20:20. Pregnant in 2010 and 2013 and now have to wear glasses again for distance- driving and telly. Also for reading but that's because I'm old!

barricade · 29/05/2015 19:24

Not sure if actual eyesight was affected ... experienced itchy eyes (which normally flares up with the Summer hay fever), and the usual headaches which resulted in squinting to read/see in brighter light .... any eyesight difficulties would always be attributed to those factors.

Hmm, would be interesting to hear if there is any links to actual eyesight changes during pregnancy.

princesssmitheee · 29/05/2015 19:46

not at all

Pmliu · 29/05/2015 20:41

When I got pregnant I didn't wear my contact lens as often, i used to wear them everyday but felt like my eyesight has changed, so ended up wearing my glasses more often. Funnily when I went for a check up my contact lens prescription hasn't changed but my glasses prescription has, so I had to get new glasses

SweetPeaPods · 29/05/2015 20:47

In my 2nd pregnancy I noticed a definite change. My eyes went out of focus/blurry, especially while using my computer and keyboard for work. I went into an opticians who told me to come back once baby had arrived, and my eyes have now gone back to normal.

MovingStress · 29/05/2015 20:51

My eyes got drier during my 1st pregnancy in 2010. I stopped wearing contact lenses then, and have never gone back. There again, mostly I only wore them some of the time - for sports like squash when I didn't want my glasses damaged, or mountaineering in the rain - since having children I've not had a lot of time for those things either!!

maureen3733 · 29/05/2015 21:29

i wore my glasses all the time for ease

shivbrown · 29/05/2015 22:23

I wear contacts more as my son pulls of my glassess!

maryandbuzz1 · 29/05/2015 22:38

I can't say I noticed much difference but I did have more pressing problems on my mind so can't say for certain.

katiewalters · 29/05/2015 23:01

My eyesight stayed the same throughout my pregnancy. I had my eyes tested when pregnant, and there was no change in my prescription. I did notice that my eyes got dry throughout pregnancy

serendipity1980 · 30/05/2015 09:12

I was already severely sight impaired before have our children, used glasses and contact lenses to make the most of the my vision. I did find that it made my sight worse, not a lot but enough that I noticed at the time. However, that is a small price to pay for having two beautiful children.

AuntieMaggie · 30/05/2015 09:16

I'm a contract lense wearer and my eyes were drier during pregnancy so my optician gave me some eye drops to help and they worked a treat. I also developed a small cyst on the surface of one of my eyes but it didn't cause any problems.

MadMonkeys · 30/05/2015 11:42

Ive worn glasses for years. I didn't notice any change in my vision during either of my two pregnancies.

PolytheneGirl · 30/05/2015 12:20

I had huge eye changes in my first pregnancy and have been left with a permanent VI.

This was a diabetes related issue but was not picked up by my Optician who refused to see me because I was pregnant and "vision changes are normal", even though I had reported severely blurred vision to him.

It took an additional 5 weeks to get a referral to BMEC (Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre) and a further 4 weeks to get an appointment.

I would like to see concerns taken more seriously and referral processes improved.

Emrob86 · 30/05/2015 12:49

No, my eye sight didn't change at all during or after pregnancy.
