Railcard want to talk to you about their Family & Friends Railcard, plus find out about what makes a great day out for you and your family.

Railcard say “We’re offering you the chance to treat your family to a fun-filled theatre trip for 4. What’s more, you’ll also win a Family & Friends Railcard and free rail travel, to help you save money on all your future family adventures.

If you win, your Family & Friends Railcard (worth £30) means you can enjoy 1/3 off most adult fares and 60% off kids’ fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. So whatever outings you’ve got planned, your Railcard can get you there for less. It really is win-win.

But that’s not all! Thanks to our pals at ‘Theatre Tokens’, you’ll also have £250 to spend at one of over 240 theatres nationwide, including London’s West End. And Railcard will cover the cost of everyone’s return rail travel too.”

Everyone who posts their answer to the multiple-choice question below and tells us what makes a great family day out will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win £250 worth of Theatre Tokens plus a Family & Friends Railcard.

The Family & Friends Railcard helps you save how much?

A) 1/3 off most adult fares across Great Britain
B) 60% off most kids fares across Great Britain

Thanks & good luck,

c- both

A great day out for us is sticking a picnic in a bag choosing a location at the last minute and seeing where the day takes us. We never plan anything until the last minute.

The best days out we've had are those where we've prepared everything the night before so we don't start off stressing about what we may forget!

For us a great family day out is to visit somewhere and try something new. Rail travel is great because there's no stress of getting lost or parking and you can also relax when the day is done without having to worry about the long drive home.

C) both.

For us a great family day out includes an activity that we will all enjoy. My children are between 2 and 12 so this can be a challenge! Usually something to DO helps, for instance, interactive theatre or a museum where there are things to try out, rather than just something to look at. We don't have a car, so affordable and convenient transport is very important to us!

A great family day out for us is something thta keeps everybody happy. Somewhere for my toddler to clamber around, some great scenery, wildlife, a nice gift shop and somewhere good to have lunch.

For us a great day out is the train to Cardiff to see a show. It's a great adventure for us and the kids. We always finish off with a nice meal. Great.

We like not to tell the children where we are going, so as it's a surprise! We all prefer going by train to by car- sitting and chatting, reading and picnicking together. Ours are at the age where a train ride is a good outing in itself - a very low effort fun morning is just taking a train a little way and going to the playground and then train home again!

My little family loves a trip on the train... but with 5 of us... it's soooo expensive... desperately need a railcard... and would love to snaffle some tickets to the Lion King or Matilda for a fantastic day out in London!

A great family day out would involve something inventive like a treasure hunt or an indoor/outdoor picnic. I let the children also choose something to do so they get to lead part of the day.

We love going on days out as a family and travelling by train adds to the fun, our kids love it and it's nice for us all to relax and take the hassle out of finding somewhere to park too.

Easy to get to, decent weather, somewhere nice but good value to eat / or have a picnic, entertainment for the kids and grown ups (preferably outdoors). No tantrums!

dm2ooo · 29/03/2015 22:02

C) Both!

Most important for a great day out is lack of stress and spending time with the kids. The train is great - no parking and traffic stress - and we get to talk together on the train (not like in the car). After that, activities that allow the kids to run around are best, with wifi for the teenagers!

fiatlux · 29/03/2015 22:05

C) Both. A great day out is any day where screens are forgotten and the whole family enjoys actually doing something together. A train ride is a brilliant part of a day out for us.

C. A great day out would be a day out that the whole family can enjoy with a great lunch. The children are just as happy going to the theatre or a theme park.

Even better if the sun is shining too Smile
