Railcard want to talk to you about their Family & Friends Railcard, plus find out about what makes a great day out for you and your family.

Railcard say “We’re offering you the chance to treat your family to a fun-filled theatre trip for 4. What’s more, you’ll also win a Family & Friends Railcard and free rail travel, to help you save money on all your future family adventures.

If you win, your Family & Friends Railcard (worth £30) means you can enjoy 1/3 off most adult fares and 60% off kids’ fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. So whatever outings you’ve got planned, your Railcard can get you there for less. It really is win-win.

But that’s not all! Thanks to our pals at ‘Theatre Tokens’, you’ll also have £250 to spend at one of over 240 theatres nationwide, including London’s West End. And Railcard will cover the cost of everyone’s return rail travel too.”

Everyone who posts their answer to the multiple-choice question below and tells us what makes a great family day out will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win £250 worth of Theatre Tokens plus a Family & Friends Railcard.

The Family & Friends Railcard helps you save how much?

A) 1/3 off most adult fares across Great Britain
B) 60% off most kids fares across Great Britain
C) Both of the above

Thanks & good luck,

For us a great family day out is finding somewhere that we can all enjoy, that is easy to get to and where children have been planned for (egg. they can see exhibits/enclosures etc).

C) Both

A great day out for our family involves something for everyone and ideally involves some outdoor time for growing and boisterous boys and maybe a meal and a fabulous show like Matilda in the evening!

FourAndDone · 19/03/2015 19:26

C) both of the above.

We love going for trips out in the train. Although I become slightly manic manhandling four children one by one across 'the gap' between platform and train so they don't fall!! My worst nightmare.

C) both.

We love a day out that we've planned and looked forward to. A trip that includes something for everyone and that we remember to take our camera on!

Equally, spontaneous trips to the park or to meet up with friends can be great.

We love visiting grandparents on the train. As we always travel on Friday after school, the railcard ensures seats for all of us and saves a lot of money.

Forward planning & effective packing makes for a great day out - a well packed rucksack is all you need :) Well that, a good night's sleep the night before!

A great day out has to include a special meal in a place we've never eaten before

We are too far from London for a day trip there but love to vist by train for long weekends as it takes as straight into the heart of the city. We are lucky that we can take the train from our suburban house directly to a local beachside village. It makes for a fabulous day trip - and a restful journey home for everyone at the end of a long happy day.

I use the train for lots of days out,it's part of the fun for the children and means I can spend the journey reading my kindle interacting with them rather than stressing about driving and parking somewhere unfamiliar.

A great day out for us is one where we can just 'be'. Time for the children to play freely, time to relax rather than always rushing from a to b. Although legoland (by train) was one of our best ever, yet hectic and extremely planned days!

A great day out is enjoying the journey, going somewhere interesting or fun, having some lovely food, talking and laughing as a family and taking home wonderful memories!

Great family day out - a picnic, a train into London, a boat trip to see the sights then to one of the Royal Parks for lunch, roll on the summer !

A great family day out for us is when we are all together and spending time doing things together whatever the weather!

benfoldsfive · 21/03/2015 12:41

Answer c

a great family day out is a train journey not to far, a museum, a show and perhaps meet up with distant friends and even a bit of geocashing!!

FannyFifer · 21/03/2015 17:38

Answer C

We are lucky to live a 2 min walk from a main train station & use the train often, love a wee impromptu day out with the kids, often decide where to go depending on what the next train is. Grin

JulesJules · 21/03/2015 18:10

C. Both

The best family days out involve a train journey, I love train stations and trains. The journey is part of the day out. Best destinations for us would be York, Edinburgh or London.

Book seats if possible and buy food from M&S or Waitrose to eat on the train. Don't try and do too much during the day and stop for something to eat and drink or the children just get beyond it.

A great day out is being able to spend some quality time as a family maybe explore somewhere new, picnic lunch and taking lots of photos. Basically as long as DD (16mo) has had fun so have we Grin

We love going to London on the train. It's great fun being a complete tourist in the Capital.

grassroots · 21/03/2015 19:57

C) Both of the above.

We love going by train if we are going up to London for Museums and stuff - would definitely go more often if we were able to travel for less.

taniam · 21/03/2015 22:25

CookieDoughKid · 22/03/2015 07:56

Option C) both. Use mostly to trips to London.
Would be great if we can use railcard to get discounts at family friendly restaurants or cafés !!

It's good value considering price of rail tickets.
