Railcard want to talk to you about their Family & Friends Railcard, plus find out about what makes a great day out for you and your family.

Railcard say “We’re offering you the chance to treat your family to a fun-filled theatre trip for 4. What’s more, you’ll also win a Family & Friends Railcard and free rail travel, to help you save money on all your future family adventures.

If you win, your Family & Friends Railcard (worth £30) means you can enjoy 1/3 off most adult fares and 60% off kids’ fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. So whatever outings you’ve got planned, your Railcard can get you there for less. It really is win-win.

But that’s not all! Thanks to our pals at ‘Theatre Tokens’, you’ll also have £250 to spend at one of over 240 theatres nationwide, including London’s West End. And Railcard will cover the cost of everyone’s return rail travel too.”

Everyone who posts their answer to the multiple-choice question below and tells us what makes a great family day out will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win £250 worth of Theatre Tokens plus a Family & Friends Railcard.

The Family & Friends Railcard helps you save how much?

A) 1/3 off most adult fares across Great Britain
B) 60% off most kids fares across Great Britain
C) Both of the above

Thanks & good luck,

A great day out for us is one where we have fun together, and make memories to look back on and share with each other again.

A good day out is when everyone has a good time with no mishaps

Our most common day out is to the local farm which is walking distance from our house and has plenty to keep small people entertained. If we're going further afield then the journey is all part of the adventure, and if we go on a purple spotty train (my daughter's interpretation of Scotrail's colour scheme) then all the better.

The best days out are ones that all the family can go to together, often four generations of my family attend and can make great memories! It's the little things!

We have a F&F railcard and love it. It's 30% off most fares, which makes days away much more affordable. I can drive, but taking the train is more relaxing for me and my son. An ideal day out starts with a train ride on reserved seats, reading and enjoying a snack from the buffet cart. We'll usually visit a museum or two, and enjoy walking round an interesting town. There'll be a picnic in summer, or lunch in a favourite chain restaurant, followed by a dozy train journey home on comfy seats.

We love a day out somewhere outdoors. A park, a zoo, a castle grounds to explore. We love to run and explore, and take a picnic!

We've used our F&F (just expired!) on a couple of family trips to London. We live in the South West so a trip to London by train can be quite pricey without the railcard. But it's so much better than driving, in every way!
We've had great days out to places like the British Museum, and the Science Museum. One of my boys has Asperger's so a bit of planning is essential if the day is to go well. We use the train journey to let the boys work out how we are going to get to our destination. We take good snacks for our train journey, and make sure we take enough to have some for the return journey. Being left with the wrong flavour crisps on the trolley (if there is one) doesn't work for an Aspie!
We usually make sure we have a couple of options for lunch. We might take a picnic in the summer or go to a planned place we know will serve happy making food. It's a relief now the boys are old enough to carry their own backpack with water, hoody and snacks.
I don't like to plan things to the nth degree but our Aspie needs a plan and some certainty, so we keep things as flexible as he can manage.
We used the F&F to take a birthday party of boys to @Bristol. That was a great bonus. It was far more fun for the kids, with an easy bus link, which really led to the sense of adventure.

All of them :)

Remember days out aren't always about spending loads of money. Sometimes its nice to absorb the culture and feeling of a place too :)

A great day out with kids is best planned in advance, to avoid them getting impatient while parents figure out transport etc or disappointment with opening times.

We usually plan things that they will enjoy, as if they are happy (and don't whine) then we are happy too. If we crave some culture then a child free weekend is better.

I think a great family day out for us is when we've managed to arrange something for everyone. So visiting 2 or 3 different places but making sure that the children both have something that they are looking forward to. Our railcard has just run out, but we used it so much last year and are planning to do lots this summer too.

I love taking the kids by train. If you do get a delay youre not stuck belted into your seat unable to interact with them. We do little trips e.g Stockport to Knutsford just to have a train ride. If I ccan get a low fare I take my kids to Suffolk to stay with the Grandparents on the train. It's 220 miles in the car. The train really can 'take the strain'.

A good family day out is one where I don't need to drive! We are close to Edinburgh so a good day out is getting train into city centre and going to a show, film, museum or gallery with lunch somewhere. Love the offers where you get cheap entry to things if you have travelled by rail!

Great family days out can be lots of different things. We love to travel somewhere new, see the local sights and have a picnic. We tend to plan well in advance, so we know what things will interest the kids, and where to go if it rains etc. Plus our favourite days ahve to be dog friendly too, so we don't have to leave our other little one at home!

A great day out with family needn't be a long journey. Just pop to the local park or beach, have a picnic, ice-cream and have fun games. Just enjoy the company of the family being together.

C - We are making use of our new railcard this weekend for a family wedding, but will hopefully use it a lot over the summer to visit friends, family and other cities, I may be homeschooling in September if we don't get a place in School so it will be great to go out and about, I drive but find the train a lot less stressful and a calm parent is the best start and finish to a family day out IMO :)

For us, a great day out has to include a picnic, somewhere to run around, maybe a castle, and no tantrums!! DD would also insist on swings and a slide.

Shockers · 24/03/2015 18:30

A great day out for us is one with open spaces, water, hills, views, sandwiches and cake!

When I take the children youth hostelling, we like to take the train. It adds to the feeling of being intrepid explorers (and we can play cards on the journey). Not so much when we camp though... too much luggage!

HungryDam · 24/03/2015 19:49

Answer is C

A great day out is a day on the beach, with the sun out and family around you. Alongside that, excellent food and a lovely hamper picnic that you didn't have to prepare yourself Smile

meglet · 24/03/2015 20:14

the answer is c) .

an ideal day out is sunshine (fewer layers to wear and carry) and exploring London.

hugjen · 24/03/2015 21:10

c. Both of the above

A great day out takes a little planning (i.e. where to go) but then allows us to change plans on a whim. We love exploring different places and as long as we have enough provisions and appropriate clothing we don't really mind where we go or what we do. The journey is definitely part of the day and we find the train is great for eating breakfast on so we can get an earlier start!!

As the children are young, a great day out for us is really just one they will enjoy. If they are occupied then we are happy. So, a visit to a park or the zoo or animal farm are ideal. Can't wait till they are old enough for museums and older activities
