Railcard want to talk to you about their Family & Friends Railcard, plus find out about what makes a great day out for you and your family.

Railcard say “We’re offering you the chance to treat your family to a fun-filled theatre trip for 4. What’s more, you’ll also win a Family & Friends Railcard and free rail travel, to help you save money on all your future family adventures.

If you win, your Family & Friends Railcard (worth £30) means you can enjoy 1/3 off most adult fares and 60% off kids’ fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. So whatever outings you’ve got planned, your Railcard can get you there for less. It really is win-win.

But that’s not all! Thanks to our pals at ‘Theatre Tokens’, you’ll also have £250 to spend at one of over 240 theatres nationwide, including London’s West End. And Railcard will cover the cost of everyone’s return rail travel too.”

Everyone who posts their answer to the multiple-choice question below and tells us what makes a great family day out will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win £250 worth of Theatre Tokens plus a Family & Friends Railcard.

The Family & Friends Railcard helps you save how much?

A) 1/3 off most adult fares across Great Britain
B) 60% off most kids fares across Great Britain
C) Both of the above

Thanks & good luck,

So far, an ideal day out is a trip to the beach. But lately they have been asking to go on a train and also go to London.

For me a great day out involves some planning and imagination. We used to go out for walks to beautiful places, but when taking my son along they weren't walks they were adventures and involved picnics and backpacks, poking things with sticks, kicking leaves, making ropeswings etc!

A great family day out is one where we all enjoy being in each other's company, and that can start on the train - we like to play i-spy or card games together when travelling by train. As long as everyone is happy, fed (ice cream!) and relaxed then most days out can be an adventure!

We live in London and I don't drive outside of my local area. This railcard makes travelling outside of London more accessible. I've taken kids all around United Kingdom. If you book your tickets in advance the cost of travel becomes very reasonable.

We love our trips out on the train, and now the baby is getting older we can't wait to start taking her on day trips?

An interesting journey to something exciting to see or do, that appeals to everybody. Then a lovely meal, followed by a relaxing trip home.

Going somewhere exciting - whether is is London or the seaside and watching the landscape change out of the train window as the flat East Anglian vistas give way to gentle hills. The best family days out always involve coming back late in the dark with the children falling asleep on us on the train because they have had a fun-packed day. There is something magical about travelling home at night with the children, it can make a day trip feel like a mini holiday.

We love going off on the train. We live right near the train station (5 mins) but none of the usual parking troubles this can entail. We're a secret tucked away housing estate :)
I hate driving long distances to unfamiliar places and I get a bit anxious if I'm trapped. I feel really free on a train - can get up and use the loo if I need! It feels like a right adventure for me and ds - we also talk more as we're put together and neither of us can run away! to use laptops tv washing machine etc! The best place we've been to is London - we'd never consider driving there. We previously had a railcard - it cost us the same to buy the card and fares to London as it would to by the fares alone - with the bonus we then had the card to use for further trips. Great that we can take my mum and she can get discount too :)

It doesn't matter where you go , just as long as you are all enjoying yourself.
Also the more money you can save on the journey means you have more to spend on getting the day perfect.

I don't drive so we go most places by train. DD likes to save her most embarrassing questions for our train journeys so they are always entertaining for everyone else

We are lucky that we are within easy train journey of several big cities with tons on museums so DD and I often go away for a 'girls' weekend, its great. If we book far enough in advance we can get first class tickets cheaply and really enjoy ourselves.

The railcard is fantastic value. Plus DS loves travelling by train and so the journey becomes part of the treat. For me, a good day out is a surprise that DH & I have planned for DS, somewhere new, a picnic, and coming home with lots of photos.

A great day out for us is the 4 of us spending quality time together, doing something that we all enjoy. We love our food so it has to involve either a picnic, a meal out or buying a cake, doesn't really matter which.

A great family day out is getting to a place safely and quickly and giving the kiddies new experiences. x

using the 241 offers when travelling by train
a good theatre show (get tickets at the Leicester Square Ticket Booth)

A great day out for us is doing something the whole family can enjoy. We love taking a stroll along the Southbank (London) as there's always something going on. The fountains in the summer are great fun! DD loves being able to run in and out of them. DS (teen) loves a trip to Nando's further along by London Bridge and DP and I like our treat at the end of the day when we invariably end up in the RFH exhausted and in need of booze a rest!
