The team at Hobbycraft would like to find out the arts and crafts activities you will be doing with your DCs this February half term holiday.

Here’s what Hobbycraft say, “As parents ourselves we know what a challenge it can be to keep the kids entertained away for the TV so for the sake of mum’s everywhere who are in need of inspiration we’d love to know what is your favourite crafting activity to do with the kids?”

The February half term is a tough one on most parents with the weather often keeping children cooped up inside. So what theme will your February half term holiday take? Will you be baking hot goodies to stave off the dreary weather? Will you re-create the outdoors inside by making an indoor den and scenery from recycling? Whatever it is, we want to hear it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where three lucky Mumsnetters will win a £100 Hobbycraft gift card.

Thanks and good luck!

DD has half term homework to model something that you might find at the centre of the earth. A la Journey to the Centre of the Earth. So she we will apparently be modelling a wounded plesiosaur from air drying clay. She's looking forward to doing the gaping wound.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 10/02/2015 21:48

DD1 loves cutting and sticking, so we're planning to make a collage.
She has a craft kit that she got for her birthday, so we will do that one day.
We will also be doing some baking - making bread and biscuits.

RueDeWakening · 10/02/2015 22:37

DD is off on Brownie holiday for the first four days of half term. Which is all good, only as a Rainbow leader I've been roped in to helping out, so will be keeping the whole lot of them company. When we get home she wants to finish off her craft badge, and possibly toymaker too, so I foresee a fair amount of sewing and general crafting.

DS1 has just had his birthday so I imagine will be making the rest of his Lego kits that aren't finished yet. And making use of the mahoosive craft box he got for Christmas.

DS2 will mostly be making a mess, he's only 1.

MNHQ, I'd like to spend more time in a prize drawer, it sounds like it'd be worth exploring :o

Baking and painting for us!

DS loves painting and loves baking too. Although, we have been cheating recently by just decorating ready made cakes. His favourite part is eating it of course!

muchtodobutstopforcuddles · 10/02/2015 22:58

We'll be making some salt dough creations for the grandmas for Mother's Day :)

mrscumberbatch · 10/02/2015 23:35

We are still on a mission post Xmas making gingerbread houses, cars, people, animals... You name it- we make it and ice it!

It's a good group activity as well for play dates and quite tasty!

anothergenericname · 11/02/2015 06:09

My 3 year old DS is obsessed with baking and cake decorating so I'm guessing we'll be spending a good many days scattering sprinkles all over the floor and bedaubing ourselves with sugar cement icing! :)

whattodoowiththeleftoverturkey · 11/02/2015 08:03

I'm working most days, but have 2 days to cram in museums, bike rides and homework.
Other than that we'll no doubt do some baking, flip a few pancakes and do a few more stitches in the cross-stitch that DD has been working on for about a year!
Nannie is itching to teach her to knit too.

StainlessSteelCat · 11/02/2015 09:39

Eldest has a lego project to occupy him, he'll probably do some drawing as well. Middle DC has a dolls house to decorate. The youngest is three, so will make interfere with whatever the older ones get out.
Then there's pancake making, making cakes/biscuits, decorating cakes/biscuits, some homework, meeting friends to play, trips to park or museum.
Personally, I'll most enjoy the baking and dolls house decorating. And the peace while all three are happily occupied making 700 pictures with glue, glitter, stickers, paint. I'll need to hold onto the memory of that happy place when I see the mess ....

Baking cookies and decorating them!

Sixgeese · 11/02/2015 13:08

I have started getting Half term sorted (and I did my trip to Hobbycraft last weekend to get the general crafting stuff I need)

DH is leading a school ski trip so I have our three DC (9,7 and 5) by myself all week.

So far we have :- Saturday - Museum of Childhood
Sunday - early morning swimming lessons / church
Monday - How to Train your Dragon 2
Tuesday - A day of Craft and fun with friends
Wednesday - Visiting local farm
Thursday - Museums in London, not sure which one yet
Friday - Hopefully a day (and night) at Grandma

Saturday - Daddy home (and Mummy goes on strike!)

I have got fimo to make keyrings, decopatch, cotton bags to paint, t- shirts to tie dye etc etc, all ready to pull out when they start getting bored.

SixImpossible · 11/02/2015 13:21

What does "February whether keeping children cooped up inside" mean? We're planning a trip to the beach! Seriously. We're going to have a daytrip to Brighton - with wellies and waterproofs.

No doubt there will be craft projects when we get home with pockets full of stones/feathers/shells/manly seaweed/fish'n'chips forks/etc.

We'll also have a TV overload day, a Mum's On Strike day (when the dc take responsibility for feeding everyone), a visiting relatives day or two - I doubt there'll be time for any serious crafting! Grin

Petal7 · 11/02/2015 14:01

My dds are mad about craft and love to plan activities for the holidays. We will be making bread animals, making and decorating biscuits, making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, junk modelling, doing a make a hairband kit, painting spring flowers, making Chinese lanterns....
I am feeling tired just thinking of it!

chevronstripes · 11/02/2015 14:04

Valentines, pancake day and Chinese new year will all involve some cooking/baking activities. DS1 has been doing Vikings at school and is very keen to build his own long boat so I need to come up with a few options for that. And inspired by Top Gear (!) they want to build a bridge. It's going to be a busy week Smile

Cherryjellybean · 11/02/2015 14:21

We have a few birthdays coming up so we will be making lots of cards. We will do baking as usual, probably with an easter theme, and we have a decorate a princess craft thing we havent done which was given to dd at christmas.
We will probably plant some seeds too so we might decorate some potsfor them to go in :)

asuwere · 11/02/2015 14:23

we only get 2 days off for 'half term' so just a long weekend... If the weather stays dry, we will be painting the playhouse - should keep them busy for a while :)
otherwise the hama beads will be coming out - all the DC love doing them.

we were also just speaking about the beach last week, I might copy SixImpossible and take them to the beach, no matter what the weather - wet sand makes better sandcastles anyway :)

lucyanntrevelyan · 11/02/2015 15:19

We will be decorating T shirts and caps given to DCs for Christmas with fabric pens (thank you Auntie!) and also making a solar system model (also a Christmas gift) that we will add too with junk modelling.

thanksamillion · 11/02/2015 16:24

DS is currently into making things with fabric. We've made a cushion and have some fabric left so I got a frame from the £1 shop and we'll cover it and make a noticeboard.

The DDs aren't interested in crafts at all..

catherinemm · 11/02/2015 17:29

I'm keen to try and make some pasta with DS -he loves the machine. He also likes cutting shapes a lot so we'll be doing some collages

Khady · 11/02/2015 17:38

We're hopefully going to be building something with the kids, including nieces and nephews. It should be fun and messy!

sanfairyanne · 11/02/2015 17:45

necklace making and good old hama beads

mumof6needssanity · 11/02/2015 18:18

I will be teaching my eldest two to make a patchwork quilt each. We will also be baking and cake decorating for my ds birthday party.
One of my dd's has to make a Roman hypocaust for school.
Cross stitch is something we are always doing.

With two boys will be den building, cooking, and my goal also to teach them my renewed passion of knitting. So addictive and a little like 'looming' I think :-)
