With Christmas almost here, we’d like to you to share how you’ll be using Netflix with your family over the festive season.

Will you put a film on while you are wrapping your presents? Maybe you’ll be using Netflix to help the kids settle down before bed on Christmas Eve - after all the excitement over the arrival of Santa! Or perhaps you’ll choose a family favourite that everyone can watch together after Christmas dinner?

We’d also love to know what devices your family uses to watch Netflix. Do your kids tend to watch the iPad? Perhaps you and DP snuggle in bed watching on your laptop? Or maybe you use your smart TV when everyone is together as family. Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Netflix has a selection of family titles, including hit movies like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Brave and Monsters Inc, as well as festive films like Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas, Scrooged and The Search for Santa Paws.

Everyone who comments below about how they think they will use Netflix over the holidays will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win an iPad mini and a 6 month subscription to Netflix.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

We will (are already!) using it to watch Xmas movies. Netflix has loads, woo hoo. I love Xmas movies, even the made-for-tv ones! DS is four and I love having an Xmas film for us to watch every day in the run up to the big day.
We usually watch on the big tv, but occasionally via the laptop or iPad if DS has opted to watch Toy Story for the 387th time so DH and I will watch something else, whilst all being cosies up on the sofa under our Xmas blankets.

TsukuruTazaki · 01/12/2014 23:05

All my family seem to be addicted to the good wife so I will be starting on that!

cookietrue22 · 01/12/2014 23:07

When it's super early, I let DS2 get in bed with me and watch Team Umizoomi on my phone, it means I'll be able to get a bit more sleep over the festive season.

DS1 loves to watch Christmas films in his room.

We will probably settle down to catch up with our favourite shows like Walking Dead or Orange is the New Black after the madness of shopping, wrapping, eating and visiting is over.

Ledkr · 01/12/2014 23:08

I watch on the I pad while I'm doing stuff in the kitchen and the others have got sky on in the lounge, it really passes the time and I mostly watch series. House of cards, orange is the new black and currently re watching Luther.
Me and my daughter like to snuggle up in my bed and watch films while my husband watches football downstairs.
Loving the suggestion of watching stuff while wrapping pressies.

PickledLilly · 01/12/2014 23:55

We will be watching loads (through our play station) mostly because there's never anything decent on tv at Christmas anymore! Rather than festive stuff, while we're both off work we will probably get stuck into a few big box set shows. DD is only 18 months so hasn't yet discovered Disney so I plan to enjoy not having to watch kids films while it lasts!

janney3 · 02/12/2014 05:51

We watch Netflix through the ipad. Can't wait to have time to sit and catch up on films I have missed watching over the past few years.

My plan is for the kids to watch something a little more educational than there usual on-line games - we'll see how that one works out.

NowThenMardyBum · 02/12/2014 07:45

We have had a Netflix subscription for a couple of months now and have yet to use it!

After a rubbish few months, we are looking forwards to a bit of quality time with DD who is poorly and on treatment once a month which wipes her out and leaves me sat on the sofa with her for a couple of days whilst she recovers. She is 20m and just starting to take interest in santa so some nice xmas films will be great.

Also, me and my DH who has been ace during all of DD's illness so far are due some quality time together when DD is in bed. A snuggle on the sofa with a film or a box set is in order. Especially as I am 32wks pg so alone time won't happen for much longer! Then Netflix will come in handy for the lengthy bf sessions and early mornings!!

hannibalismisunderstood · 02/12/2014 09:24

We use Netflix on the main TV, my sons (15) laptop and my 5 year old DD keeps trying to steal my tablet to watch her programmes. If we won the prize I could let DD have my basic tablet for her to watch santa paws for the 15th time and still be able to browse mumsnet and watch breaking bad on the new ipad! It would keep my sanity intact and let DD have her disney fill without annoying the rest of the house!

duckbilled · 02/12/2014 09:51

I will be depending on my Netflix for two weeks over Christmas and New Year as we are off to stay with the in-laws!!!

WowOoo · 02/12/2014 10:40

I would like to watch Breaking Bad. Is that on Netflix?

MimsyBorogroves · 02/12/2014 12:02

I'd like to subscribe to Netflix (Dinosaur Train for DS2, the Lego stuff for DS1, and I'd quite like to watch Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad as I NEVER watch any TV EVER) but we can't afford it.

So I won't be using it at all. Grin

CMOTDibbler · 02/12/2014 12:10

We don't have netflix at the moment, but am tempted for manky day snuggling in bed watching christmas films on the smart tv.
It would be v tempting to watch stuff on dhs phone to remove the boredom at the PIL too Grin

RockinHippy · 02/12/2014 13:43

DD uses it with her Apple TV box in her room as we do too, it allows us to watch Breaking bad & the likes without her seeing :)

we also have it on our smart TV in the living room, but we are not yet smart enough to work out how to use that - so our Xmas may be more, dongle, dongle, than jingle, jingle Grin IF we can get that up & running, we shall be using Netflix to avoid the usual Xmas TV drivel & will enjoy Xmas day huddled up in front of a fire & Netflix :)

JoffreyBaratheon · 02/12/2014 14:34

My 21 year old watches it on his Kindle Fire and his laptop. He loves anime films. 19 year old uses laptop (he has worked his way through every Nicholas Cage film he can find!) and my 12 and 14 year olds watch it on their Playstation and on my laptop. Sometimes we all watch together connecting the laptop to the TV.

At christmas, the whole family will be together (I have 5 sons) and we will definitely have to constantly use Netflix as there is very little on Sky and it's great to be able to watch what you want when you want or just binge. I watch films and documentaries.

We also had 'Love Film' as part of my Amazon Prime package - but I ended that and we realised we hadn't bothered with 'Love Film' once. But we all use Netflix constantly - both together and separately.

With my older sons, even if we watch something separately at our own paces we all talk about it together afterwards. We had to race eachother to the end of 'Breaking Bad' so no-one got any spoilers...

lpbarton · 02/12/2014 14:34

We'll be using it for lazy evenings snuggled up on the sofa, the kids will have friends round for movies night and we'll just indulge!

Norfolkandchance1234 · 02/12/2014 14:36

We all watch Netflix here and love how portable it is when we go away. We watch it through the ps3, ipad and iPhone. I love lots of series but wish they would show all the seasons that exist. The kids watch lots of series and films and I watch films I wouldn't ordinarily have chosen to watch or even knew existed. I love the Netflix series that they have created such as orange is the new black and house of cards. I do wish you could maybe download them for when there is no wifi connection when we are driving in the car on long journeys. My DD often has her favourite programmes on in the background whilst she plays in her room.

HouseBaelish · 02/12/2014 16:27

There will be just the two of us this year.

I LOVE Netflix mainly because of the really stringent family filters. I know that I can be off doing something around the house and that my daughter can watch something on her profile and I know it won't be inappropriate.

As for me, I love searching by genre.

This Christmas I intend to watch every Christmas related show I have in My List (another feature I love!)

Christmas Eve will be snuggles watching something we choose together

We will be using Netflix for a variety of different things this year. We will be catching up on old family favourites, fils we all enjoy but haven't seen in years.
With my husband I will be watching some documentaries, they have some really interesting looking ones on Netflix but it's difficult to find the time to actually sit down together to watch them.
With my two teen girls we are going to catch up with Orange is the New Black. They have seen it but I haven't so I can't wait to see that. I love spending time with my two girls, we will do it properly with popcorn and a pick n mix!

I think if I get a few hours to myself I might treat myself to the new House of Cards. It's the type of thing I love to watch all by myself so that there are no interruptions at all.

I cannot wait to put the 'out of office' on my work computer on the 23rd........straight home to my family to eat drink and be merry.

Samichuboo · 02/12/2014 20:58

We have a smart tv and smart phones. Our dd1 is 2 and is into Disney princesses so whenever we need a few moment peace she loves to watch Brave or Tangled. Dd2 is 5 months so anything with music and bright colours is a winner! Dh and I have been snuggling up on these dark nights to watch house of cards (and loving it), when we get a few minutes to ourselves he watches breaking bad and I've just started orange is the new black.

PetulaGordino · 02/12/2014 21:12

We watch on smart TV, laptops, iPad and iPhone. We have watched a couple of episodes of house of cards whilst abroad on holiday too because we had wifi access

We will almost certainly put on a Christmassy film whilst putting up the decorations, and catch up on series we have been enjoying once we're both on holiday. I'm looking forward to seeing what's going to be available on Netflix over Christmas and new year, definitely

sianishere · 02/12/2014 21:14

I originally got Netflix to watch Breaking Bad, thinking I'd watch it all then cancel after my free trial. But I then discovered so many other great shows and movies so we kept it!

We get Netflix through our Virgin box straight to our TV which is great as we can watch whatever we want at the touch of the remote. We're making a list of great films that we can watch on Christmas eve with the children and lots of fun food like hot dogs and popcorn.

I also watch Netflix through my laptop when I'm in the kitchen cooking so I'll have something to keep me occupied while cooking Christmas dinner.

Hopezibah · 02/12/2014 22:09

We usually all snuggle up on the sofa together and mainly use the telly.

cookiefiend · 02/12/2014 22:12

I would love to say we all watch family favourites round the log fire sipping hot chocolate, but my best use of Netflix comes at 5am when DD won't go back to sleep. I prop her next to me in bed with a children's show, pull the covers over my head and try to sleep. I hope for a couple of lie ins this festive period! Xmas Wink

Princessxo · 02/12/2014 22:17

We usually have movie night on Saturdays which is really fun and itms a good way to get the kids to calm down.
