We've been asked by Ready brek to find out about MNers' best porridge based recipes and healthy breakfast creations

Ready brek says "Coinciding with the launch of Ready brek's 'easy sachets' collection, we'd love to hear about how MNers customise their porridge. In tasty Original and delicious Chocolate and Gingerbread flavours, and made only from finely milled oats, vitamins and minerals, this hot oat cereal delivers all the benefits of an adult porridge, but without the lumps. Easy to make in the microwave or with hot milk this kids' porridge gives your children a tasty warming start to the day. But the Ready brek oats can be used for so much more than just porridge. One look at the Ready brek and Weetabix website shows just how versatile these oats can be. From Ready brek breakfast muffins, to 'ginger-brek men', there's hundreds of ways you can make your cereal go further."

So, how do you customise your porridge or Ready brek? Maybe you add some bananas? Or do you prefer to add blueberries or raspberries? Perhaps honey is your usual addition? Whatever you add to your porridge, Ready brek would love to hear about how you keep breakfast time fun and healthy.

If you don't usually have porridge for breakfast, do you have any porridge based recipes? Perhaps you like to add porridge oats when you're baking cookies? Or maybe you'd rather use your porridge oats for flapjacks? Let Ready brek know what your favourite porridge based recipes are.

Every MNer who posts on this thread will go into a prize draw to win £250 from Ready brek and Weetabix.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Flapjacks with coconut, sultanas and cinnamon, made with golden syrup and brown sugar are my sons favourite food and good for filling up teenage boys.

PavlovtheCat · 06/09/2014 13:43

we add a choice of the following, the choice varies from day to day:
Honey
Chocolate spread
Jam
frozen of fresh berries, depending on what we have available, cooked for a couple of minutes then pureed into a sauce and poured over in heart or star or initial shapes
sugar rarely if we don't have anything else to go in
yoghurt in the summer after it's been soaked overnight in the fridge with milk.

Raspberry jam
Sultanas and mixed spice
A friend has recommended Nutella - yet to try it

I am on a low fat diet and have porridge most mornings as it really fills me up until lunch time. I make mine with water and a dash of skimmed milk and today I added blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, pineapple, mango and strawberries! Lovely and healthy too! I am on the way to losing 2 and a half stone in 2 and a half months so will keep going. Always had porridge growing up as good scots lassie so reminds me of home.

CrumblyMumbly · 06/09/2014 13:56

Oh and my kids enjoy it too but I make theirs with milk and whatever fruits I have - today they chose strawberry and banana. A lovely healthy and filling breakfast for their busy days at school and pre-school.

pippitysqueakity · 06/09/2014 14:00

Salt.
So don't use readybrek.

My 5 yo loves Ready brek with apples, blackberries & banana in. She has it every morning before school. Easy , healthy & gone in less than 10 minutes.

changeeverything · 06/09/2014 16:21

Raspberries, ground flaxseed, agave nectar and a tbsp cream.

Banana and maple syrup

Wjjkl · 06/09/2014 16:56

Banana & cinammon.. Yum!

Maiyakat · 06/09/2014 19:13

Porridge oats are for flapjacks or parkin (aka brown cake in our family!)

rachaelsit · 07/09/2014 00:05

I use oats for flapjack and add raisins and crystallised ginger!
In my porridge or ready brek I add fresh fruit like rasps it blueberry sand I love a drizzle of maple syrup on it too!

marymanc · 07/09/2014 12:52

I like my porridge with cinnamon and seeds. The best are sunflower and pumpkin's seeds.

onestepbeyond · 07/09/2014 13:02

Stewed blackberries that we've picked ourselves. If it's a very special occassion, a swirl of Nutella!

unadulterateddad · 07/09/2014 20:54

Dried tropical fruit or Strawberry Jam

Aethelfleda · 07/09/2014 20:56

Spoon of sugar on the top to make it crunchy: yum! Or spoon of jam for a school-dinner effect!

walde · 07/09/2014 21:05

Tons of golden syrup for me.

Baby bear and Goldilocks get frozen raspberries and cherries stirred in to theirs. Makes it tasty as well as cooling it right down so it's juuuuust right.

JoInScotland · 07/09/2014 21:09

I stir in a little maple syrup and then a bit of milk.

KateOxford · 07/09/2014 22:19

I often add blueberries and honey but if I'm not feeling so healthy then golden syrup!

idleweiss · 08/09/2014 10:03

Blueberries, raspberries, coconut, chia & agave syrup!! Sooooo good!!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 08/09/2014 10:07

Raisins / sultanas, dried cranberries, banana, dried apricots, fresh berries (ie. blueberries, strawberries - what ever is in season or on offer at the time!).

Strawberry jam is another (less healthy but tasty!) alternative!

Cambam2010 · 08/09/2014 10:13

I like to sprinkle sugar on the top of mine so that it melts into a sweet layer. failing that a dollop of Jam comes a close second

Nouseforausername · 08/09/2014 12:26

fruit puree for ds here :)

ouryve · 08/09/2014 12:32

I prefer real porridge, cooked nice and slowly, but I'm not averse to plain ready brek (measured with a spoon, from a big packet) when I'm in more of a hurry. I always have to have a chopped up banana on top. In summer, I also add seasonal strawberries, blueberries and even peach. I don't add any other sweetness, as it's not needed.

Melonbelle · 08/09/2014 13:12

Fresh fruit or dried fruit, normally whatever needs using up.

My favourite is slices of opies stem ginger with some of the gooey sugar syrup it come is, yum.

Roseformeplease · 08/09/2014 13:14

At the moment, we have a huge glut of apples in the garden and there are blackberries jumping off the hedgerows. These we stew together into a lovely apple and bramble mess and eat with our porridge. At other times of the year, it is rhubarb or banana. However, I actually love the taste of porridge so can eat it without any topping, or just with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
