We've been asked by Ready brek to find out about MNers' best porridge based recipes and healthy breakfast creations

Ready brek says "Coinciding with the launch of Ready brek's 'easy sachets' collection, we'd love to hear about how MNers customise their porridge. In tasty Original and delicious Chocolate and Gingerbread flavours, and made only from finely milled oats, vitamins and minerals, this hot oat cereal delivers all the benefits of an adult porridge, but without the lumps. Easy to make in the microwave or with hot milk this kids' porridge gives your children a tasty warming start to the day. But the Ready brek oats can be used for so much more than just porridge. One look at the Ready brek and Weetabix website shows just how versatile these oats can be. From Ready brek breakfast muffins, to 'ginger-brek men', there's hundreds of ways you can make your cereal go further."

So, how do you customise your porridge or Ready brek? Maybe you add some bananas? Or do you prefer to add blueberries or raspberries? Perhaps honey is your usual addition? Whatever you add to your porridge, Ready brek would love to hear about how you keep breakfast time fun and healthy.

If you don't usually have porridge for breakfast, do you have any porridge based recipes? Perhaps you like to add porridge oats when you're baking cookies? Or maybe you'd rather use your porridge oats for flapjacks? Let Ready brek know what your favourite porridge based recipes are.

Every MNer who posts on this thread will go into a prize draw to win £250 from Ready brek and Weetabix.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Apples and cinnamon here as well.

Sometimes raspberry jam.

supermariossister · 05/09/2014 16:44

honey, jam, sliced banana, golden syrup, sometimes nutella. not all at once obviously

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 05/09/2014 16:44

Gosh I thought I was the only person who added ginger but I see there's some others. I have a jar of stem ginger in syrup which I chop into tiny chunks and add with a drizzle of the syrup.

Or a spoonful of Oxford marmalade is good.

LairyPoppins · 05/09/2014 16:45

grated cooking apples from our apple tree and cinnamon and golden syrup

mmmmmmmmm

WowOoo · 05/09/2014 16:46

I sometimes add banana. Dc like honey, jam or fruit. They've tried blackberries most recently.

I used to put cinnamon, chopped apples and brown sugar on mine but not anymore.

Holfin · 05/09/2014 16:48

DD loves porridge but the only thing I have ever added is mixed fruit. I am definitely going to be more adventurous this winter and give some of the other ideas on here a try !

bwmooky · 05/09/2014 16:49

All 3 dc love their porridge - raisins obligatory, honey or syrup and chopped bananas optional. My mum has a full fruit salad at the bottom of her porridge but I personally think that's a step too far!

Fav · 05/09/2014 16:53

I like butter and sugar (on an unhealthy day) or blueberries and honey.

If anyone from Readybrek reads this, I have memories from over thirty years ago of butter flavour Readybrek - did this exist or is it my imagination?

mjmooseface · 05/09/2014 17:13

I like to add a concoction of chopped bananas, blueberries and strawberries to my Ready Brek. And on more adventurous days I will hand pick and steam... Ah screw it...

The truth is, Ready Brek...

All I ever want to put on you is... SUGAR. Pure, white, granulated sugar.

And yes, I realise I am turning a potentially healthy breakfast into a dental disaster but I don't care! Sugar just tastes so damn good on you!

There's more...

Sometimes, I mix in Hot Chocolate Drinking Powder because I love the way it turns so chocolately and melty in your mouthy!

And lastly... Sometimes I even swirl in Honey. Sweet, sweet honey.

But mostly, I eat you with sugar.

Oh, and I make you with cold milk. And stick you in the microwave. Because who has the time and/or patience to gently warm up the milk on the hob?!

I have created a mess in the microwave with my methods before, though. When I've not kept an eye on things and it's exploded out of the bowl.

I also lick the bowl out afterwards because apparently I'm 4 years old!!!

But I will always

WheresTheCoffee · 05/09/2014 17:16

We all have something different..I like raisins, DS jam and DD plain.
However, if anyone has figured out a way to squeeze the air out of the bag without giving yourself an early morning ready break shower, I would love to hear it! Grin

howtoapproachthis · 05/09/2014 17:17

i add cinnamon coconut milk and mixed berries. sometimes pumpkin seeds. yum.

lpbarton · 05/09/2014 17:57

Grated apple and cinnamon for me and the boys like it on the very cold mornings otherwise they're after jam or chocolate powder I have to say :D

BellaBearisWideAwake · 05/09/2014 18:00

golden syrup and blueberries

TinyTear · 05/09/2014 18:03

Sometimes just brown sugar
Sometimes golden syrup
Sometimes a hand full of cheerios for texture
Sometimes cinnamon

...

mumsbe · 05/09/2014 18:09

Blueberries strawberry apple raisins coconut apricot honey banana and a little bit of sugar not all together though

IScreamForIceCream · 05/09/2014 18:13

I add fruit: one or more of blueberries, blackberries (from freezer), banana, chopped apple or pear, raisins.
But u favourite is chilli jam.

RubyGoat · 05/09/2014 18:23

I have my porridge just as it is. 1/3 cup each oats, milk, & water. Possibly with some fresh berries if there are some available.

I do make flapjacks with dried morello cherries & unsweetened cocoa nibs, and butter (not oil or margarine). They are rather delicious, and less sweet than most flapjacks.

MissTFied · 05/09/2014 18:25

Oats in a bowl, add boiling water, then chopped pear, cinnamon and almonds.

BellaVita · 05/09/2014 18:28

I put blueberries on my porridge or quite often I will put the oats in the pan the evening before with some milk/water and pop some dried mixed fruit in too. Overnight the oats and fruit swell and make the porridge even more delicious.

If I am feeling decadent, I will pour some cream in and have a drizzle of syrup on top too.

Cooroo · 05/09/2014 18:33

Proper porridge from oats with yoghurt and ginger curd!

jonicomelately · 05/09/2014 18:39

Into a Kilner jar I put layer of porridge oats, layer of yogurt, layer of fruit, and repeat. Place it in the fridge overnight. Delicious.

kamikami · 05/09/2014 18:43

I just add sultanas for some added sweetness. And I mix my porridge oats with half milk half water.

MooseyMoo · 05/09/2014 18:50

Mainly honey or sometimes grated apple and cinnamon

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 05/09/2014 18:58

I make my porridge with water. I sometimes add cinnamon and occasionally some sultanas. I often mix in a few whole oats too.

DD1 (3), likes her porridge made with milk with nothing else added.

For DD2 (1), I make porridge with milk and usually add some mashed banana.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/09/2014 19:02

mum adds dried fruit to her ready brek. she does not like the sachets as they are not big enough. she likes ready brek and is busy builing the european food mountain of ready brek. it is good for oaps who need easy things to prepare.

porridge oats are added to dd's weetabix, and to my cheats white sauces and stirred into my tomato and lentil based concoctions. ds does not like oats and will not eat them... so he thinks...

I like porride made with water, thick enough to stand a spoon up in and with large quantities of golden syrup. this last bit is why I don't eat it. I used to make porridge with milk to use up milk nearing it's sell by date when I was a student. I would freeze it and defrost for breakfast another day. if I could summon up the energy, I would try porridge with dried fruit.

I may use some of the afore mentioned european readybrek mountain to stir into sauces when at my mums as it will be easier to hide.
