We've been asked by Ready brek to find out about MNers' best porridge based recipes and healthy breakfast creations

Ready brek says "Coinciding with the launch of Ready brek's 'easy sachets' collection, we'd love to hear about how MNers customise their porridge. In tasty Original and delicious Chocolate and Gingerbread flavours, and made only from finely milled oats, vitamins and minerals, this hot oat cereal delivers all the benefits of an adult porridge, but without the lumps. Easy to make in the microwave or with hot milk this kids' porridge gives your children a tasty warming start to the day. But the Ready brek oats can be used for so much more than just porridge. One look at the Ready brek and Weetabix website shows just how versatile these oats can be. From Ready brek breakfast muffins, to 'ginger-brek men', there's hundreds of ways you can make your cereal go further."

So, how do you customise your porridge or Ready brek? Maybe you add some bananas? Or do you prefer to add blueberries or raspberries? Perhaps honey is your usual addition? Whatever you add to your porridge, Ready brek would love to hear about how you keep breakfast time fun and healthy.

If you don't usually have porridge for breakfast, do you have any porridge based recipes? Perhaps you like to add porridge oats when you're baking cookies? Or maybe you'd rather use your porridge oats for flapjacks? Let Ready brek know what your favourite porridge based recipes are.

Every MNer who posts on this thread will go into a prize draw to win £250 from Ready brek and Weetabix.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Milk - I like it just the way it is, even not mixing in the milk fully so there are lumps Grin

telsa · 20/09/2014 21:41

Frozen fruit heated up, or just brown sugar.

FinDeSemaine · 20/09/2014 22:11

Raspberries, golden syrup, raisins, blueberries, apple, honey, dark brown sugar, malt extract, chopped prunes, cinnamon, ground ginger, chopped dried figs. Any combination of the above is pretty good.

PS, I haven't eaten ready brek for years, but does it have milk in it? I only like porridge made with water and find the milky kind horrible. I often quite fancy the idea of the add boiling water little cups/sachets but I wish there was a kind with no milk as I really cannot bear the milky taste.

We love porridge especially in cold weather. Jam goes well, i remember my mum sprinkling salt on hers! I like other peoples ideas of chopped apple and the like, will try that next.

WonderWomansSister · 20/09/2014 22:59

We don't have porridge for breakfast but I do use porridge oats to make sultana flapjacks for after school snacks, and added to mini turkey burgers to up the whole family's wholegrain intake.

I also love oats in cranachan, with lashings of cream, raspberries and whiskey. Yum!

TenMinutesEarly · 20/09/2014 23:20

A pinch of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg. Divine.

NettleTea · 20/09/2014 23:52

butter, golden syrup, pinch of salt and some cream.... mmmmm

BUNMUM · 20/09/2014 23:56

I add raisins to mine and I may or I maynot also add a little bit of my daughter's chocolate and caramel cereal. Shhh! (grin)

I also use porridge oats to make oaty bread and of course flapjack.

Itiswell · 21/09/2014 00:42

I usually add grapes, blueberries and banana to it - delicious :-)

I also use it to make the crumble part of apple crumble :-)

Longtalljosie · 21/09/2014 08:13

DD has had half a banana roughly mashed with a fork stirred into her porridge with raisins since she was 9 months or so. She's now 5 and still loves it. We use Oatso sachets (sorry Ready Brek!) and it's ready really quickly, easy to do on school days etc. When I'm losing a couple if pounds, a bowl of unsweetened porridge is a really good start to the day because you just don't feel like snacking.

Love Ready Brek. Reminds me of cold mornings as a child, ready Brek on the table. Then wrapping up warm before leaving for school.

In our house, we add any of the following:
Bananas
Raisins
Honey
Blueberries
Strawberries
Dried apricots
Jam
Sprinkles of desiccated coconut

Makes me look forward to Autumnal mornings. Lovely.

BathshebaDarkstone · 21/09/2014 20:54

I like blueberries, the kids prefer golden syrup. Smile

VanGogh · 21/09/2014 21:47

Mixed spice and raisins.

Tastes like hot oatmeal and raisin cookies!!!

Noappointmentnecessary · 21/09/2014 22:27

Bananas with a sprinkling of cinnamon

HorseyGirl1 · 22/09/2014 13:07

umm, chocolate buttons - just 2 or 3. Enough to give you a tiny chocolatey treat but not enough to feel unhealthy!

mmmmm dark brown sugar, banana or sometimes a big blob of homemade raspberry jam!!! Nom nom nom....I'm off for a bowl!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 22/09/2014 22:16

For the DC I cook it with almond milk, grated apple, cinammon and chia seeds. Once it's out of the pan I sprinkle it with sunflower seeds and drizzle with honey.

As a "treat" on weekends they get Peanut Butter stirred in with mashed banana and a cooked with cocoa powder.

I like doing overnight oats - mix porridge oats, chia seeds, grated apple, frozen raspberries, milk and yoghurt, leave overnight and stir in chopped almonds and sunflower seeds the next day

Peregrin · 23/09/2014 14:19

Coconut milk, raisins and bananas or blueberries, sprinkled with cinnamon.

Foxtailsoup · 23/09/2014 14:34

Stewed fruit - apples, pears, plums, apricots... (but not all at the same time!)

Gooseysgirl · 23/09/2014 16:51

Two cubes of frozen puréed mango, brings it to the right temperature for my baby DS Smile

pickles184 · 23/09/2014 19:27

Chopped apple, cinnamon and a drizzle of honey more often than not.
Sometimes blueberries if I have left over (rare as dd hoovers them up).
I love it with a swirl of jam or lemon curd, but too much sugar for everyday.

I make our porridge with oat milk as dd has a milk allergy, and we usually share. Whenever I've tried making it with water it turns out awful, could anyone share any tips on not turning it into oaty glue using water??
