We've been asked by Ready brek to find out about MNers' best porridge based recipes and healthy breakfast creations

Ready brek says "Coinciding with the launch of Ready brek's 'easy sachets' collection, we'd love to hear about how MNers customise their porridge. In tasty Original and delicious Chocolate and Gingerbread flavours, and made only from finely milled oats, vitamins and minerals, this hot oat cereal delivers all the benefits of an adult porridge, but without the lumps. Easy to make in the microwave or with hot milk this kids' porridge gives your children a tasty warming start to the day. But the Ready brek oats can be used for so much more than just porridge. One look at the Ready brek and Weetabix website shows just how versatile these oats can be. From Ready brek breakfast muffins, to 'ginger-brek men', there's hundreds of ways you can make your cereal go further."

So, how do you customise your porridge or Ready brek? Maybe you add some bananas? Or do you prefer to add blueberries or raspberries? Perhaps honey is your usual addition? Whatever you add to your porridge, Ready brek would love to hear about how you keep breakfast time fun and healthy.

If you don't usually have porridge for breakfast, do you have any porridge based recipes? Perhaps you like to add porridge oats when you're baking cookies? Or maybe you'd rather use your porridge oats for flapjacks? Let Ready brek know what your favourite porridge based recipes are.

Every MNer who posts on this thread will go into a prize draw to win £250 from Ready brek and Weetabix.

Thanks,
MNHQ

I am pretty boring and like either salt or brown sugar (depending on whether I fancy sweet or savoury.) Whichever way it has to have a skin, that is the best bit by far. I have a great recipe for raspberry oat bars which uses porridge oats and a tin of raspberries, I may need to make some now you have reminded me.

I wish my BIL was on mumsnet to share his porridge recipes. Since he isn't I will share for him.... Porridge with sticky toffee pudding in or porridge with guinness cake in or porridge with peanut butter in or porridge with chocolate fudge cake in....... at breakfast time too!! He makes a point of baking every weekend so he has cake to put in his porridge. He is so skinny too it is just wrong!

Sugar and milk

Or

Honey and raisins

thewomaninwhite · 05/09/2014 20:47

Rasperries, cherries (yum!)

thewomaninwhite · 05/09/2014 20:48

I can spell, sorry for typo. I am ashamed (and tired!)

AvonCallingBarksdale · 05/09/2014 20:49

Always made with milk and toppings sway between brown sugar (always brown, never white), honey, or, if feeling particularly treat-worthy, syrup. Also use oats for an endless supply of homemade flapjacks and also in crumble. Yum!

Cathpot · 05/09/2014 20:50

Stewed apple and apricots from tupperware in fridge - sweetens the porridge and cools it down at the same time - saves me time before work.

BigfootFiles · 05/09/2014 20:51

"Easy sachets"? I don't understand what's so hard about 'proper' porridge. Proper oats, zapped in the microwave for 3 mins with a stir in the middle, is hardly a great hardship.

But anyway. Raisins, fruit, or honey on top.

FrontForward · 05/09/2014 20:56

Prunes, coconut, almonds, apricot, apple and banana with honey. Not all at once

Safmellow · 05/09/2014 21:06

Banana, chopped dried apricots or other dried fruit. Sometime strawberries or raspberries.

Always make it with soya milk.

Yum.

wheretoyougonow · 05/09/2014 21:08

Jam. A big blob in the middle. My boys love it and won't add anything else!

FunkyBoldRibena · 05/09/2014 21:12

I use the big flappy organic oats, cook in the same volume of water. A pinch of salt.

Once all cooked and creamy [you have to stir whilst cooking to get the creamy texture] I add a dollop of cream and one of [my home grown, home made] red quince jelly.

I'm wobbling just thinking about it.

I am currently cooking membrillo from this year's quinces and might just have to make some porridge and add some of that instead whilst it cooks down. The smell is so heady and perfumy it's orgasmic.

Microwave porridge Shock

FunkyBoldRibena · 05/09/2014 21:18

Twice the same volume of water!

Greenandcabbagelooking · 05/09/2014 21:25

I add porridge oats to crumble topping. I learnt this trick in Yr 7 cookery lessons. It gives a better texture, I find.

I do like porridge for breakfast. Making it for 30 people on guide camp is a skill it's taken a while to perfect!

chocolateshoes · 05/09/2014 21:33

DH & DS love porridge. Sometimes with golden syrup, or flaked almonds. Always with dedicated coconut.

Primadonnagirl · 05/09/2014 21:40

DH has lemon curd.I infuse the milk with star anise...want some now!

BustyDeLaGhetto · 05/09/2014 21:42

Dried apricots, chopped nuts and sliced apple. Occasionally cinnamon, if I'm feeling seasonal.

marymouse · 05/09/2014 21:48

Dc's love blueberries and a dash of honey

SaltySeaBird · 05/09/2014 21:49

Ooh I love porridge but Ready Brek is a firm favourite. I live it with sugar and a pinch of cinnamon. DH has raisins with his and DD just has it plain!

Laquitar · 05/09/2014 21:51

Cinnamon and apple . and walnuts if there are any.
I hate raisins.

r2d2ismyidealman · 05/09/2014 21:52

Milk and cinnamon and then added fresh fruit. Yum.

janney3 · 05/09/2014 21:55

Very bad I know but it just has to be golden syrup.

SaltySeaBird · 05/09/2014 21:56

Oh and I can't see ginger-brek men recipe on their website, can we have a direct link please as they sound great!

gildedlily · 05/09/2014 21:57

Personally I think porridge is the devil's work and much prefer muesli, granola or flapjack to get my oats! My boys, on the other hand lurve ready brek and porridge. Porridge in our house is one mug oats, 2 mugs water, and a good glug of double cream. This is topped with syrup and cold milk. The boys would also like to stir in hot chocolate powder after seeing their uncle do this but that's a treat for high days and holidays only.

nousernamesleft · 05/09/2014 22:01

Ds likes his made with rice milk, and fresh fruit. His current favourite is doughnut peach and plum added to the pan at the beginning so they start to cook and go soft.
Chocolate milkshake mix and banana always goes down a storm too.

MakeTeaNotWar · 05/09/2014 22:01

Lots of yummy ideas here! We add raisins, honey and banana
