We've been asked by Ready brek to find out about MNers' best porridge based recipes and healthy breakfast creations

Ready brek says "Coinciding with the launch of Ready brek's 'easy sachets' collection, we'd love to hear about how MNers customise their porridge. In tasty Original and delicious Chocolate and Gingerbread flavours, and made only from finely milled oats, vitamins and minerals, this hot oat cereal delivers all the benefits of an adult porridge, but without the lumps. Easy to make in the microwave or with hot milk this kids' porridge gives your children a tasty warming start to the day. But the Ready brek oats can be used for so much more than just porridge. One look at the Ready brek and Weetabix website shows just how versatile these oats can be. From Ready brek breakfast muffins, to 'ginger-brek men', there's hundreds of ways you can make your cereal go further."

So, how do you customise your porridge or Ready brek? Maybe you add some bananas? Or do you prefer to add blueberries or raspberries? Perhaps honey is your usual addition? Whatever you add to your porridge, Ready brek would love to hear about how you keep breakfast time fun and healthy.

If you don't usually have porridge for breakfast, do you have any porridge based recipes? Perhaps you like to add porridge oats when you're baking cookies? Or maybe you'd rather use your porridge oats for flapjacks? Let Ready brek know what your favourite porridge based recipes are.

Every MNer who posts on this thread will go into a prize draw to win £250 from Ready brek and Weetabix.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Love porridge with honey and banana or if feeling virtuous add a handful of seed mix. Also, grated apple, cinnamon and sultanas is good.
Make lots of flapjacks or honey and peanut butter bars and add oats to crumble topping.

I add blueberries but sometimes if I'm feeling naughty I like a sprinkling of brown sugar. DD has porridge every day and she likes runny honey on hers, in a swirl or a heart shape . DH also has porridge every day and he likes a dollop of jam. We eat a lot of porridge here!

Aubasaurus · 08/09/2014 13:51

DD has microwaved porridge with milk and either mashed banana or grated apple and sometimes a sprinkle of cinnamon. Recently I've been enjoying overnight porridge - making it in the evening with plain yoghurt and frozen berries, leaving it in the fridge overnight and then adding a bit of honey in the morning. DH will not touch porridge in any form.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/09/2014 13:53

I usually put brown sugar (the golden granulated sugar) on my porridge - I like the taste of it that plain. Occasionally I will put golden syrup on, and I have once had it with golden syrup and double cream (at a hotel in Scotland) - and that was delicious but very rich.

Spoonful of flax/ sesame seed and goji berries mix, plus big spoonful of frozen fruit ( blueberries or mixed berries)

Cyclebump · 08/09/2014 14:00

In desperation during a hospital stay I added dried cherries a friend had brought me for a snack to the hideous hospital porridge. It improved it to an amazing degree and I used them every morning. Mmmmm

Porridge, made with half milk half water, with fresh blueberries or maple syrup is my DH's regular breakfast. I like it with a tiny amount of sugar, nothing else.

Liney15 · 08/09/2014 14:09

DH and I like comb honey on our porridge and to be really indulgent a bit of cream if we have any in the house on mine. DD loves golden syrup on her porridge it's one of our favourite breakfasts.

Also make flapjack with added sultanas and that's good if we're in a hurry or going for a run later.

lottegraham · 08/09/2014 14:12

My sons favourite breakfast is porridge, he has it most days of the week, i made him flapjacks yesterday and he loved them !! they were really gooie with lots of golden syrup(very tasty). My boyfriend likes porridge and honey swirled all over the top. but my favourite is still the flap jacks. :D

BettyFlour · 08/09/2014 14:19

I always ate Ready Brek as a kid in the winter. I still do, and so do my kids. We have it plain - just warmed milk from the microwave and then Ready Brek stirred in. I have it fairly runny. DCs like it thick.

DS1 likes it raw...! That is, he likes to eat spoonfuls of dry Ready Brek!

campocaro · 08/09/2014 14:28

What ever homemade jam I have -just a spoonful
left over bits of fruit-figs and apple particularly good
always raisins-I lov the way they plump up in warm porridge

Fillybuster · 08/09/2014 14:37

We love porridge in our house, but generally keep it for weekends and really cold days - making enough porridge for 6 people takes tine (and sachets are just not cost effective at that point, although brilliant for the office) and t definitely takes the dcs (especially the younger ones) a lot longer to eat hot food in the mornings!!

The dcs like to have a swirl of home-made jam or fruit coulis in theirs porridge, or even some dark chocolate sauce (like the type you can put on ice creams etc) for a special treat. I like it with just a sprinkling of demerara sugar over the top. It goes lovely and gooey as it softens and melts, and is just mmmm....

I use porridge oats loads: always in a crumble mix to add some bite, flavour and crunch; oat and chocolate chip cookies and flapjacks with loads of seeds and dried fruit for the dcs after school snacks; and I have a really good porridge oat & bran bread recipe.

Porridge really is a miracle food: healthy, tasty, incredibly diet friendly

StainlessSteelCat · 08/09/2014 14:49

Store cupboard breakfast! Love it, although can't always be bothered to make it.

We use porridge oats, water and raisins - that way I can make it on those days when the bread and milk run out! I've tried other additions (cinnamon and apple, milk, banana, jam) but the DC always reject them, so raisins it is.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 08/09/2014 14:51

I make mine with water, then add vanilla yogurt and frozen mixed berries.

Ds's like it with Nutella or bananas, I like mine with mixed berries (I keep some in the freezer)

FPATEL · 08/09/2014 16:22

Lots of lovely ideas on here!
My honey and banana topping sounds boring in comparison.

Miaow1234 · 08/09/2014 19:53

We love ours with golden syrup, flaxseed and berries.

wantacatplease · 08/09/2014 19:56

Maple syrup!! Yum, my dcs love it.

gamerwidow · 08/09/2014 20:17

I add a big dollop of strawberry jam.

boopdoop · 08/09/2014 20:47

For my DS I add pear or strawberry and banana. He loves it. I don't eat porridge myself but I use porridge past for flapjack, and I always put extra golden syrup in, and hopped dried apple.

Galvanized · 08/09/2014 20:51

We add cinnamon (stirred in while cooking or sprinkled on top if we forget!), chopped banana - the toddler helps chop while the porridge is cooking - and maple flavoured syrup. Every morning unless we run out of milk!

Mumtobeyorkshire · 08/09/2014 20:55

I love it with sliced banana and honey drizzled over :)

vestandknickers · 08/09/2014 20:58

Love ready brek. I add lots of dried fruit. A swirl of maple syrup if I'm feeling fancy.

jelliebelly · 08/09/2014 21:04

The kids love any flavour jam or fruit purée in theirs. I love raisins/sultanas/apricots/honey/banana or anything else left in the cupboard!
