We've been asked by Ready brek to find out about MNers' best porridge based recipes and healthy breakfast creations

Ready brek says "Coinciding with the launch of Ready brek's 'easy sachets' collection, we'd love to hear about how MNers customise their porridge. In tasty Original and delicious Chocolate and Gingerbread flavours, and made only from finely milled oats, vitamins and minerals, this hot oat cereal delivers all the benefits of an adult porridge, but without the lumps. Easy to make in the microwave or with hot milk this kids' porridge gives your children a tasty warming start to the day. But the Ready brek oats can be used for so much more than just porridge. One look at the Ready brek and Weetabix website shows just how versatile these oats can be. From Ready brek breakfast muffins, to 'ginger-brek men', there's hundreds of ways you can make your cereal go further."

So, how do you customise your porridge or Ready brek? Maybe you add some bananas? Or do you prefer to add blueberries or raspberries? Perhaps honey is your usual addition? Whatever you add to your porridge, Ready brek would love to hear about how you keep breakfast time fun and healthy.

If you don't usually have porridge for breakfast, do you have any porridge based recipes? Perhaps you like to add porridge oats when you're baking cookies? Or maybe you'd rather use your porridge oats for flapjacks? Let Ready brek know what your favourite porridge based recipes are.

Every MNer who posts on this thread will go into a prize draw to win £250 from Ready brek and Weetabix.

Thanks,
MNHQ

12LuDo · 19/09/2014 22:56

Brown sugar! It crystalises and has a lovely texture!

fiona1189 · 19/09/2014 23:04

I love a big dollop of Nutella on my porridge. xx

bouncingbelle · 19/09/2014 23:45

I like raisins for their natural sweetness and my daughter prefers honey. The boy likes a swirl of lemon curd!

KolossiKairos · 20/09/2014 08:43

Maple syrup and blueberries. Sometimes chia seeds if I'm feeling virtuous!!

gazzalw · 20/09/2014 10:09

Have it as we used to have it as children - with milk and brown sugar - then you can make porridge islands with milk moats! :-). Sssh but don't tell the children :-).

titchypumpkin · 20/09/2014 10:21

Sometimes nothing if we're in a rush, otherwise I add whatever we have handy, maybe raisins, cinnamon, honey, fresh berries (not all at once!!).

Some good ideas on this thread :-)

Lurleene · 20/09/2014 11:09

Another one for maple syrup here.

We often buy individual porridge pots as a breakfast option if we are staying in a hotel where breakfast isn't included. As long as you have a kettle in your room you can have a quick, cheap, convenient breakfast which will fill you up for the day saving on time, money and washing up!

MoreTeaPenguin · 20/09/2014 11:49

I'm definitely going to try ginger porridge, sounds lovely!

Yesterday we made blueberry syrup with special offer blueberries (4 punnets for £1!) that wouldn't last another day and a splash of maple syrup, heat in a pan til bubbling, stir for 3 minutes so some berries go mushy and some are still whole. We had porridge with blueberry syrup this morning and we all scoffed the lot!

I also use porridge oats in crumble topping - make as usual, then stir in half the flour weight in oats.

I love porridge . So warming and comforting . I have it every morning with cinammon , cardamom powder, raisins and a tiny drop of vanilla essence ! Yummy !

AmethystMoon · 20/09/2014 14:40

Cinnamon (lots of it!), honey, brown sugar, cream...yummy?

Helspopje · 20/09/2014 14:41

toppings
banana and honey
cinnamon sugar coated apple chunks
blueberry and agave
fruity compotes (obv never stolen the home made purees that I made for the baby....)
sometimes I make it with cardamom infused sweetened milk
mixed chopped dried fruit (partic tropical mix)
healthy seed mixture - sunflower seeds are lovely
and once in an american breakfast mood.... maple syrup and bacon
I like salted 'real porridge' (am scottish) but salted readybrek is yuck.

recipies
home made granola and bircher museli
stuffing for rolled meats or poultry
flapjacks (incl flavoured ones with rasins, cranberries ect)
as a coating for mackerel
as a crunchy topping for savoury and sweet crumbles
in 'skirlie' (another scottishism)
in veggie burgers
banana muffins
biscuits - cookies and melting moments.

ScienceRocks · 20/09/2014 17:08

Almonds and blueberries.

hellymelly · 20/09/2014 17:09

I love Ready brek but I can no longer eat gluten . I wish they would bring out a gluten free one.
anyway on porridge I normally have muscovado sugar. Sometimes cinnamon too. Or a trickle of maple syrup. Yum.

dottyaboutstripes · 20/09/2014 17:31

I have porridge most days but eat it completely plain. I make it using half water, half milk and enjoy it just as it is Smile

helenthemadex · 20/09/2014 17:59

I use frozen raspberries or sliced banana to bulk it out its delicious and sets you up for the day

PloddingDaily · 20/09/2014 18:07

DS loves porridge with a generous spoonful of nutella stirred in, DD's favourite is with a spoonful of strawberry jam & raisins/sultanas. It seems to keep them going... Smile

Ilovexmastime · 20/09/2014 18:25

Bananas and cinnamon, yummy.

StroppyPoppy · 20/09/2014 19:07

I do all the things in the OP (unoriginal) but if I can buy or make some decent lemon curd then I love a dollop in porridge. Blackberry curd is nice, too. I don't do it very often as it's quite sweet, even for a confirmed sugar addict like me.
