Hi,

Does anyone know if universal credit back date the child disability element from when you first called dla for the claim form (which dla too will back date) or does uc child disability element start from the date dla make the award?

Thank you

AlexandraJane98 · 25/04/2024 13:25

Hello all, I recieved my letter saying I would be getting backpay on the 19th of April (last friday) and I still haven't recieved the second letter to say how much and when it will be payed. I have put messages on my journal several times but I have had no reply at all, is this normal? Thanks

It took 4 weeks to get a decision then a further week to get the letter to say how much, then 2 days to get the money

DanDan85 · 25/04/2024 14:03

Just wanted to add my timeline to give people an idea.

I let UC know my child receives middle rate care on 24th March - you have to do this by going to change of circumstances, then people who live with you. I received disabled child element for March with my usual payment on 28th (usually 30th but bank hol weekend).

On 6th April I had a note in my journal to say my sons DLA had been verified. I replied asking for backdating to feb 2022. They asked why I reported late. I said I was unaware that the disabled child element existed and did not declare my sons DLA to them before because it was his money, not mine and since its DLA/PIP it does not affect my ‘earnings’.

24th April I received a letter on my journal to say they have accepted my reasons for reporting late and they will backdate it to 24th February 2022.

25th April I received a note in my journal advising that my previous statements have been updated and I am owed £x which will be paid within a ‘few days’. Im hoping it clears tomorrow rather than next week but either way i’m chuffed.

chin up everybody, & good luck!

Bash1988 · 25/04/2024 18:23

Im so annoyed and wondered if anyone had any advice. Reported the change a few weeks ago. My son was entitled for over a year but I wasn’t aware. He has high rate care. I reported the change weeks ago and I didn’t realise at the time my award date was different than the receipts I had from claiming which meant my change date was like a week out (it was April last year). So a week or so later I was advised that for verification purposes that I’d have to report the change again. I chased up the award today and the advisor told me it had been verified and he processed back pay to the award date, he had out as 10/4/24!! No I told you 23 and asked for back pay! It’s all there in my journal, so now this is setting me back longer since the request for back pay and carers hasn’t even been processed at all. Do you think I should complain? I’m afraid to piss them off so much that they don’t award me the money.

TheSnappyTurtle · 26/04/2024 08:32

@Bash1988 Im going through something similar. DLA award from April last year and i didnt know these elements existed. They only agreed 4 months to disabled element so ive had to put in for a mandatory reconsideration. Ive still had no response about carers element back pay. I submitted the change on the 26/03/2024 and still fighting. Ive put in two complaints through the link on the thread. Ive put in my journal again today. If i dont hear anything theyll be getting another call on Monday. If it’s been longer than a week since youve had a response theyll be more willing to help over the phone.

I’m really sorry to hear this. It also doesn’t fill me with much hope. I think I’ll probably put a complaint in and escalate it to hopefully avoid any issues with the advisor since he’s totally arsed up everything I’ve asked for so far. Keep me posted?

TheSnappyTurtle · 26/04/2024 16:33

@Bash1988 Yeah mines turned complicated because i transitioned from tax credits to UC before i got the DLA letter. But ive called twice and both times they messaged on the journal within 48 hours and i have had 4 months back pay paid for disabled element a couple days later. Im just not happy about the amount so I’ll see where that takes me. Carers element im still waiting to be told if it’s even gone to the decision maker. Well get there, hope you hear something soon

Alfsnan84 · 29/04/2024 08:19

19 days with a dm, still no news 😕

xxMumofthreexx · 29/04/2024 13:44

3/4 Reported the change
4/4 Sent to decision maker
10/4 Told no set time scale
24/4 Made a complaint saying 3 weeks for a decision maker to decide was ridiculous.
26/4 Decision made, same day I asked how much and when as the message didnt state this.
Today I received a message stating how much and when payment would be, so in all 4 weeks to sort by the time payment is received.

MoosMa22 · 29/04/2024 19:38

Hiya. I received a message on my UC Journal saying they couldn't match my sons details to the details I'd given back in 2020. They said I need to enter his DLA rate. So I entered he'd gotten high rate DLA. They then messaged me again saying I need to put 12/08/22 as this was the date he was awarded it. Not one single person ever told me I needed to update this on my UC claim, or that he was entitled to extra disabled child element. So anyway, I've done this and was told it'll go straight to the decision makers for any back payment. Does anyone no if someone would ever get back paid nearly 2yrs worth?xx

Accbabymom1994 · 29/04/2024 23:01

Hi , I didn't know about the disabled child element either , I put in the date I got the letter I've been awarded which was Nov 2023 but I had applied in June and that's what they paid me from. So which one should I have put in ?

katiewil · 29/04/2024 23:02

I declared changes on 10/04
When I contacted them for an update this week he said I won't know if it's been verified until my next statement date which is 6/05!
So 4 weeks until verification.. then I have to wait for DM
So frustrating 🤦🏻‍♀️

Did you go through the change of circumstances then to the children bit to add what rates they get? It should then be on your next statement after doing this, i think its just if you update the journal that it then doesn't get added straight away. There is a complaints link a few pages back, go through that to see if it speeds things up for you 🙂

From what I got told, I think you need to put June. I put the wrong date and they told me, but I'm assuming they don't correct everyone xx
