I have a son of 8 months who is a terrible sleeper. I have trawled through websites, literature, libraries finding information on controlled crying. Has anyone got any experience of this having a negative efffect on their baby? This has been recommended to me by a health visitor who knows my baby's sleep history. thanks

Crossedwires, I am so very delighted for you and your family!

You know, when I read your earlier posts I was really worried that CC would not work for you and ds but, boy, did you prove me wrong!
I hope your ds has another great night tonight, fingers crossed

NKF · 06/05/2007 20:31

Of course he loves you. He's your baby. He adores you.

crossedwires · 06/05/2007 21:39

thansk daddyj/nkf - he woke 2 hrs after going to bed this evening and I braced myself for more anguish hearing him cry. The crying lasted 8 mins with me going in at 2/2/4. Now he is soundly asleep again. It is horrid to hear him cry and sends shock waves through my whole body but the outcome surely is positive.

Despite what you read elsewhere doing cc does NOT mean their 'spirit is broken'! My children are very spirited and if they need me at night they shout or cry and I always come. But they no longer wake simply because they can't get back to sleep by themselves. It changes your life!
And I promise my children still love me lots!

mishw · 06/05/2007 22:08

Of course he still loves you! All of us CC fans never doubted it!

Hope you have a good night - now I just need help in letting DD2 (7m) know that 5.30am is not time to get up, think I may have to start taking my own advice again

crossedwires · 07/05/2007 08:08

well he woke at 10pm (10mins) and 4:21 - 4:56 . Did cc again - God it's awful in the early hours. I guess this is pretty normal considering the newness of his 'routine' and how dependant he was on my breasts!. Still a vast improvement but hoping he gets the hang of it really soon!

Hi crossedwires, Sorry, I was out most of yesterday.
Well done ! It seems to be going well.
Don't worry about last night. He still went from 10.10pm to 4.20am. Thats great! So much better than before you started. Think of all that lovely unbroken sleep.
I bet you feel really chuffed.

Its funny how when you have some good sleep one single wake seems so much worse than when you were waking every hour.

crossedwires · 07/05/2007 10:03

princess mel - that's so right! MAkes me sound like a moany old bat! Funny thing is, the more he sleeps, the more tired he seems

But I really think that true. The better my dd sleeps in the day the better she sleeps at night. for exmaple, last night we had to wake her from her nap to go out. Then she went to bed a little bit late (only half hour but we missed out the bath)and she woke up- not sure what time. All week she's been sleeping through. (Thats amazing by the way for her!!)
If she had gone to bed normally she'd have slept better.
Good sleep breeds good sleep.

princessmel · 07/05/2007 10:07

He's catching up.

SoMuchToBits · 07/05/2007 10:13

Hi croosedwires, sorry I was out yesterday as well (took ds to a cricket match).I'm really pleased you are seeing some improvement. It's so much easier once you start getting a bit more sleep. Hang on in there, it really is worth it.

SoMuchToBits · 07/05/2007 10:14

Agree too that the more sleep they have, the easier it is for them to do it.

kittypants · 07/05/2007 10:23

sorry just seen post(question about still crying/resisting).only crying 4 minutes at most, lastnight was worst night yet and even that was better than it had been before starting cc!.ive found writting our progress helps alot.

Pimmsontherocks · 07/05/2007 10:34

I did cc with my tiny one since he was 5 months- she is now 10 months and a very happy, healthy, sociable little bundle of joy.

She loves her mummy to bits!!

My mum did cc with me 33 years and I still to this day- i LOOOoove sleeping, love my mum and all are a very happy family!

SoMuchToBits · 07/05/2007 12:26

Oh, yes, kittypants, agree that writing it down really helps, as you can see the progress you are making much more easily.

Do you know what? I have found so much support since using this forum that I want to thank all those whose support I received! so...Thank you . I am sure there will be more wakings (I would be niave to think otherwise) but this gave me the kick up hte a**e that I think I needed and I do feel sooooo much happier since my son has begun to sleep better. It is amazing how low you can get on little sleep without actually realising what a deep hole you are in. I would not advocate cc willy nilly but for those on the brink it can be a much needed life-ring. I shall continue to visit this thread as I am sure there will be occasion to . But a huge, enormous thanks to all!!!!

Aaaaaaahhhhhh! Crossed wires, I have been really happy to post on here and give you support, just ecause I know how hard it is, especially when you don't have mch support.

When we did it, most of my friendssaid things like "Oh, you can try it, but it will never work!"

Not very helpful. But we stuck at it, and it did work, and we have a very happy ds.

Hope it continues to go well for you, and you have agood night tonight.I will look in tomorrow and see how things are.

Good night for now!

Malaleche · 08/05/2007 00:06

Just want to report that DD2 8 mo slept right through last night from 1am, when i went to bed and gave her a dream feed, till 8am!!!!!! and it's true - the better they sleep, the better they sleep.
Surely, considering how important sleep is to them in terms of processing info they've taken in while awake, we should do all we can to ensure they get enough of it?

crossedwires · 08/05/2007 12:01

Best nght so far last night! He went to bed at 7pm, woke at 2:am for a little shout but was asleep after two visits from me. Still find it very distressing to his crying but it now sounds more angry than upset and is a mix of grizzling and yelling. Then he woke for hte day at 6:15am. I guess the night waking will gradually cease???? malaleche - good for you too!!!

princessmel · 08/05/2007 12:17

Brill Crossedwires. Don't feel about him waking.
He's doing really well. I bet you feel better too.

Glad this thread helped you. xx

We, on the other hand had a broken night. dd has another ear infection. Got antibiotics for her today. She woke up twice. I bfed her. Its easier to tell if she's poorly now because as she sleeps ok (generally) when she wakes you know its not normal.

SoMuchToBits · 08/05/2007 13:04

Well done crossed wires. I expect you are feeling better now you are getting a bit more sleep.Does your ds still seem happy and love you? I bet he does. I'm really pleased things are going well for you.

tartanchatterbox · 09/05/2007 15:25

I just cought up on this thread after watching your progress and wanted to say you are all very brave.
Maybe we all will be criticised in future for CC, but at the end of the day every mum and baby out there needs sleep to survive.
I do think it depends on the children. How distressed they are and whether they are wanting for something, but I'm sure we can all tell the difference.
It is learning the difference in the first place and that is what CC is all about I think.
It is training the parent to know when is the time to go in, and when to leave them to there whingy tired cry. And giving the babies the opportunity to go to sleep without that anxiousness every night that they are going to be abandoned.

crossedwires · 09/05/2007 20:43

somuch to bits - ds definitely still loves me! He also seems to love his sleep and his naps are sooo much better too. He still wakes once per night (at the moment) and he will protest for a bit but he often wakes, grizzles and goes back off again - unheard of until recently . Thanks again for your support - I really could not hvae seen this through without MNetters! I know I would have been crazy with sleep deprivation and in a very dark place by now . So a huuugggee thanks!
