Racist thread

There is a thread running in AIBU where people are being openly and freely racist. You've already deleted several posts on there so you're aware of it. Why are you allowing it to run?

Also why do you allow racism against travellers on here?

OP posts:
PrincessofWells · 10/08/2025 19:34

I absolutely agree, it's vile.

Honestly I'm fed up of it.

Have you reported it OP? Otherwise it’s very difficult knowing which one you feel is racist?

Hardtothink · 10/08/2025 20:22

I don 't know the thread you are talking about here but there is a current thread in AIBU which turned into a farce because a lot of posters thought the thread wasn't genuine and were openly mocking the OP.
I reported a couple of the posts and pointed out the thread had lost all credibility. I got a response from MN that they were " looking at the thread" and I saw that they deleted some posts. But even though I questioned in my feed back why the thread was being allowed to stand I got no further response from MN.
I was really disappointed because I'd always thought their moderation of threads was quite responsible. In the case I'm talking about it seemed entertainment value was more important than it being a genuine thread.

If you feel a thread is racist and you have reported it as such and the thread is being allowed to stand then it is very concerning.

I think it's the thread about the trampoline park.

I've reported no end of posts and they've been deleting them so they're fully aware

@mnhq it's still going on

Absolutely unbelievable.

@mnhq are you going to explain yourselves? You knew this was happening for several hours and just let it carry on

Hi there @ThejoyofNC.

It wasn't really a case of 'knowing it was happening and letting it carry on'. The thread you refer to in itself did not break Talk guidelines. We take racism very seriously but that doesn not mean that certain topics can never be discussed at all; we would always look at the thread as a whole and delete any posts that did constitute racism or break our guidelines in other ways.

In this case, we were receiving a huge number of reports across a period of several hours and there were many other threads that also required pretty immediate attention. During that time we deleted many posts on the thread and behind the scenes had taken other action, including banning some posters and contacting others off the boards.

While reports like this are coming in, we're always keeping an eye on whether the balance of a thread has tipped enough to require it being removed completely. In this case, we'd say that balance was nearing tipping point anyway when the OP asked that the thread be removed completely, and at that point we agreed it was for the best for it to go.

We understand that it may feel like you are reporting and not much is happening, but behind the scenes there is a lot more than that going on. We'll always delete racism and did so here, but where a thread in itself is not racist, we try to allow a conversation to happen while moderating in hopes that the thread can remain on track. In this case, as we say, it only became unsalvageable a good few hours in, and at that point we made the decision but we don't think it benefits anyone or changes hearts and minds for us to delete threads before they hit that (sometimes delicate) tipping point.

We hope that explains things a bit further. And we hope it also goes to show that your reports really are useful. While we moderate by our Talk guidelines, it's often the reports coming in that allow us to see when a thread starts to tip over into deletion territory and it looks like that was certainly the case last night, so thank you.

GreySkySummer · 11/08/2025 09:58

@KellyMumsnet the op in her very first post heavily implied the bad behaviour was linked to them being travellers.

i think she caveated it with something like “I’ve got nothing against travellers” does that excuse the racism?

PandoraSocks · 11/08/2025 10:04

We take racism very seriously

Yet that thread was allowed to carry for a long time.

Plus there are posters spamming the boards with racism and far right rhetoric, all allowed to flourish.

sesquipedalian · 11/08/2025 10:18

OP, is it racist to point out something that is true? I could say, for example, that travellers came and stayed for three days at a town near where I live, and left behind an enormous amount of rubbish that cost the council (ie taxpayer) a huge amount to clear up. Is stating that racist? Or is it legitimate to allow a discussion? I will always come out on the side of free speech, not least because it allows people to show who they are. In the now deleted post, the OP made reference to two unpleasant boys who happened to be travellers, and you leapt on that and said it was “racist” because it implied (your word) that all travellers were likely to be ill-behaved humbugs. But that was your interpretation. If she had complained about, say, an elderly next door neighbour, you wouldn’t immediately have leapt to the conclusion that she was implying that all elderly neighbours are a pain. I don’t know what else was said on the thread: I read it fairly early on.
@ PandoraSocks -
Racism is rightly unacceptable. But when is the precise point that right wing views become unacceptably “far right”? We are all entitled to our opinions, and the fact that I may disagree with your opinion does not mean that you don’t have an absolute right to express it.

It would not be racist to report on one incident (if true, obvs). To then say something that suggested all travellers were doing the same starts to tip into racism in my opinion. That generalisation of one person/subset’s actions to the whole racial group.

PandoraSocks · 11/08/2025 10:39

I think when it gets to the point of pushing for remigration and a white ethnostate, subtly encouraging the idea of unrest and pushing racist conspiracy theories m, a line hs been crossed.

YMMV.

PandoraSocks · 11/08/2025 10:42

But you wouldn't have a pile on dehumanising all elderley neighbours, making them all out to be criminals who run around smearing shit everywhere and cutting off each other's willies.

Which is exactly what happened. It happens on every thread about travellers and I suspect OP knew that.

HappySummerDays · 11/08/2025 10:46

I read the post where the poster was saying her friend (or possibly a friend of a friend) is a nurse in A and E and someone came in who had been kidnapped and his penis was cut off and thrown out of the car window. Surely that would have been headline news??

That is what was being posted on that thread.

Thanks for your response.

I think we're probably going to have to agree to disagree about the intentions of the thread. It was heavily saturated with racist posts right from the first page and I don't think that could have happened without the OP inviting it.

I certainly don't think any topic is above discussion, quite the opposite in fact. It just so happens that racism against gypsies and travellers is the last openly acceptable form of racism in society and people have absolutely no shame expressing disgusting views based on stereotypes, prejudice and assumptions.

I'd be glad to assist you if you are ever interested in exploring the reality of modern day traveller life on your site.

OP posts:
ThejoyofNC · 11/08/2025 11:02

That's actually incorrect @sesquipedalian I didn't accuse the OP of racism. It was the swarm of posters who had their posts deleted for that reason.

Of course it's not racist to talk about a bad encounter you've had with a person from a certain ethnicity. It does however cross over into racism when you use that encounter to judge the entirety of that ethnic group negatively.

My lovely neighbour is from a traveling community before she settled down. But she acknowledges that the majority can be problematic. Is she racist against her own people then?

Acknowledges? Or finds it easier to agree with everyone else for a quiet life?
Ive taught quite a few traveller children in various schools. That’s not a view of the community I’d share.

She's a very outspoken lady. Trust me there is nothing quiet about her 😂

She says the majority of travellers are problematic does she? I don't believe it. I don't know a single gypsy or traveller who would say that.

Sorry but 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Good grief, some posters really are incredibly gullible, aren’t they?

Agree, that would have been the DM’s headlines sorted for a year.
