REMOVE THE ABILITY TO POST PHOTOS COMPLETELY

Yes I’ve posted in all caps because this is something that needs to be yelled about. It’s not good enough for them to be reported and removed, even if 24/7 paid mods are employed. They should not be able to be posted at all. I can’t see any 100% cast-iron system that can prevent such images from ever slipping through, and that is too high of a risk to pay. We don’t need photos that badly here. This is by and largely a text-based forum. I feel utterly sickened that this has happened and can happen again at any moment. Unless photos are disabled completely, no one is safe from being assaulted with such disgusting images.

janeandmarysmum · 03/02/2025 09:07

Surely a way round this would be to require those who want to post photos to have been members for a certain period?

onwardsup4 · 03/02/2025 09:09

Photo function needs to be removed until they have put proper photo moderation in place

notatinydancer · 03/02/2025 09:10

Snowmanscarf · 03/02/2025 07:24

I’ve never seen disgusting images.

Lots of cute puppies though.

Well you’re lucky. They were horrible.

maudelovesharold · 03/02/2025 09:11

Who exactly would suffer as a result of a blanket ban on uploading images?

notatinydancer · 03/02/2025 09:11

Irrelevant and I hope no one describes them to you but they were horrible.

Why do you want an exact description of child abuse? Fucking hell.

poemsandwine · 03/02/2025 09:15

YesHonestly · 03/02/2025 08:05

The fact that images of CSA were able to be posted, multiple times, on threads with innocent titles on a site of this size is inexcusable.

There is no photo screening and no moderation overnight. We have raised this many, many times. This should never have been allowed to happen.

It's pretty shocking.

poemsandwine · 03/02/2025 09:17

Why would you want to know details? That's bizarre.

Itsdifficulttodomyjobsometimes · 03/02/2025 09:17

Good to hear that @MNHQ have reported the matter to the police.
Once MNHQ have had time to review the situation I'd like to know what measures they will take to prevent it happening again.

I'm sorry for anyone that was exposed to those images. It shouldn't have happened.

Jollyjoy · 03/02/2025 09:22

Ohno I'm so sorry to those of you that saw abuse images. MN should be issueing a statement asap and offering therapeutic support to anyone who needs it.

SwerveCity · 03/02/2025 09:22

I think @maxwellparker77 needs their hard drive checking. Who the hell asks for more description of CSA images? Sicko

I don’t think @mnhq goes anywhere. I may be wrong but I that’s the case.

To be fair, perhaps some posters don't realise that the images in question featured explicit child sexual abuse. Loads of people are talking in general terms about the 'awful stuff' without (understandably) wanting to refer to specifics.

Plenty of people will just be logging on for the first time today, aware that some seriously unpleasant stuff was posted overnight, but without knowing what. I don't think we should be berating posters for wanting the simplest of explanations to what has gone on. It doesn't necessarily indicate that they are slavering for graphic descriptions FFS.

As the OP said 'graphic images of CSA' and you actually asked 'what EXACTLY was posted' Why would you ask a question like that? You should be ashamed of yourself.

BarbaraHoward · 03/02/2025 09:27

There's no need to blanket ban all photos - that's a very basic function on any kind of chat forum or social media and it was ridiculous that MNHQ took so long to introduce it in the first place.

I actually think the delay introducing photos has the same root cause as the shit storm last night - MNHQ (maybe just Justine?) seem to refuse to acknowledge that this isn't the local FB group and is in fact an enormous enterprise that needs proper IT infrastructure and 24 hour paid, properly trained, properly resourced moderation.

The site isn't run in a professional manner and last night is just an extreme example of the multitude of problems.

aspidernamedfluffy · 03/02/2025 09:30

Treeleaf11 · 03/02/2025 08:29

How about stopping the ability to post any photos at night

This is a world wide site so not sure how that would work with the different timezones.

towelsandsheets · 03/02/2025 09:31

So whoever posted probably used a VPN and a throwaway email address making tracking difficult

My registered email address is tied to me a as a real person - should the ability to post be tied to the ability of MNHQ to be able to identify a real person under police request ? Or is that too risky for some of the difficult areas or topics ( that's not just the feminist boards )

the OP DID NOT say that in the original post. She may have said it further down the thread, but people often post without reading the whole thread. Hold your horses before you assume the worst of other posters and jump down their throats. I seriously doubt anyone is going to go into graphic detailed descriptions on this thread anyway, so if anyone was hoping for that they are going to be disappointed.

poemsandwine · 03/02/2025 09:33

Agree. 24/7 moderation by paid staff should be a priority. It's madness that it hasn't been introduced a long time ago.

The fact that the poster asked what exactly is weird enough in my opinion. Get off your high horse

How exactly could they do that? They could Google the name I use in my email and they would find me and my profile on the website at work and my private FB profile - but how do they verify that it's actually me who has that gmail account? I'm sure as hell not going to use my work email for MN.

And then they have to do that for every single member?

It's as impractical as manually approving every image for posting.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/02/2025 09:36

This has turned me off using Mumsnet more than any previous data breach or anything else. I was on the site last night but clicked away when I got an inkling of what was going on and am so glad I didn't accidentally see the pictures 😡. Have HQ made a statement this morning? I'm still feeling very cautious.

They were responding to me responding to someone else that the images were of a graphic CSA nature, and wanting exact details of what was posted. Unfortunately in this case the person knew exactly what they were asking for details of.

I’ve been on here a long time and wouldn’t say uploaded images are significant or integral part of the site? Maybe I don’t go on the relevant boards (apart from Litter Tray). I could survive without posting pics of our cat, though….
Which users would it impact?

Chuchoter · 03/02/2025 09:41

I disagree. One night of people posting horrible pictures should not outweigh all the other photos that are uploaded every day and are harmless.

As soon as you saw one awful photo you would have realised the board is being spammed and not continued to open posts until the morning when the moderators would have removed them.

No need to feed the drama by clicking on the posts and being horrified.
