REMOVE THE ABILITY TO POST PHOTOS COMPLETELY

Yes I’ve posted in all caps because this is something that needs to be yelled about. It’s not good enough for them to be reported and removed, even if 24/7 paid mods are employed. They should not be able to be posted at all. I can’t see any 100% cast-iron system that can prevent such images from ever slipping through, and that is too high of a risk to pay. We don’t need photos that badly here. This is by and largely a text-based forum. I feel utterly sickened that this has happened and can happen again at any moment. Unless photos are disabled completely, no one is safe from being assaulted with such disgusting images.

I’ve never seen disgusting images.

Lots of cute puppies though.

FreshEgg · 03/02/2025 07:25

Then you are very fortunate because graphic CSA images were posted last night.

I don't think photos should be stopped but perhaps any post that has a photo should be pending until they have been seen by someone at mn.

Yogre · 03/02/2025 07:28

I don't think they should remove the ability to post photos or screenshots, the site wouldn't be the same and many other forums manage it just fine.

I do think there should be paid 24 hour moderation.

And some sort of photo ID verification before people can post photos.

ViolinsPlayGentlyOn · 03/02/2025 07:29

Agree. Thankfully I didn’t see the images posted last night but there have definitely been images posted here I didn’t want to see (people went through a stage of posting genitalia pictures at one point).

MN either need to remove the facility to post or pre-moderate any images. The former is probably easier.

CarefulN0w · 03/02/2025 07:39

Could the ability to post photos be delayed until someone has been a member for x time? Not foolproof if people are determined, but would remove the ability to sign up and post immediately.

Op seemed to say the mods are paid but are employed? Presumably somewhere else?

stayathomer · 03/02/2025 07:43

But … dogs? What about dog pictures?!?!?

They're only paid employees during the day. They're volunteers with limited powers at night.

You seriously value dog pictures more than preventing images of CSA being shared?

SylviaAndSydney · 03/02/2025 07:45

Eww, it happened a few years ago too, but they were horrifically graphic photos of violence and death.

Glorybox2025 · 03/02/2025 07:47

At this point it's very easy to use AI to screen photos and images and if mumsnet (and other chat forums) don't have this embedded in their systems yet they need to invest some money into it pronto. It should be very easy to prevent explicit or violent images from being attached.

agreed

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 03/02/2025 07:55

They could be uploaded and sent to MN to be approved before its posted

Maybe only people with a paid sub (does premium still exist?) should be able to post photos ?

Auldlang · 03/02/2025 08:00

@ViolinsPlayGentlyOn clearly nobody does, but your logic is flawed. Do you think Instagram users prefer abuse images to dog pics? Largely not, eh? Lots of photos on insta though. Stop setting up straw men. Nobody wants children to be abused because they want the ability to post pictures. The two aren't the same.

I suspect there will be a lot of "get rid of pictures we don't need them" from people who don't use certain boards such as gardening, pets etc. But it should be possible to have the capacity for photos and the site to stay ethical. Large swathes of the internet manage it.

ViolinsPlayGentlyOn · 03/02/2025 08:01

I’m not the person who is trying to make the thread about dog photos. Which are irrelevant and unnecessary.

Auldlang · 03/02/2025 08:02

@maxwellparker77 how much more information do you need? Kind of weird that you want more details of this? People have been talking about this for hours now on several threads, it's not fabricated, and I sincerely hope nobody decides to discuss the images with you in detail.

janeandmarysmum · 03/02/2025 08:04

For a site that generates so much revenue, the mechanics of posting seem to be very unsophisticated.

UtterlyOtterly · 03/02/2025 08:04

Is stayathomer seriously saying that seeing pictures of dogs is more important than banning pictures of CSA?

I hope they don't come back to say it was a joke, that would be in appallingly bad taste.

PalestPinkestPoseyRose · 03/02/2025 08:04

Gone to google what Csa is, only know it as child support agency

Found it, amongst several other meanings.
If pictures are posted, they probably do need to be put as pending, before being published, oh and NOT published, I should have said

YesHonestly · 03/02/2025 08:05

The fact that images of CSA were able to be posted, multiple times, on threads with innocent titles on a site of this size is inexcusable.

There is no photo screening and no moderation overnight. We have raised this many, many times. This should never have been allowed to happen.

Yes, I was on here when this happened one evening. The photos were awful & just being chucked onto any random thread without warning (Eg I'm reading about a cute puppy then the next post is photo of a bloody dead body)

We had a kind of support thread going for people (including myself) who were upset by them, it's stuck in my mind as a time when MN pulled together.
