REMOVE THE ABILITY TO POST PHOTOS COMPLETELY

Yes I’ve posted in all caps because this is something that needs to be yelled about. It’s not good enough for them to be reported and removed, even if 24/7 paid mods are employed. They should not be able to be posted at all. I can’t see any 100% cast-iron system that can prevent such images from ever slipping through, and that is too high of a risk to pay. We don’t need photos that badly here. This is by and largely a text-based forum. I feel utterly sickened that this has happened and can happen again at any moment. Unless photos are disabled completely, no one is safe from being assaulted with such disgusting images.

@PalestPinkestPoseyRose it's child sexual abuse 😥

PalestPinkestPoseyRose · 03/02/2025 08:04

Gone to google what Csa is, only know it as child support agency

Found it, amongst several other meanings.
If pictures are posted, they probably do need to be put as pending, before being published, oh and NOT published, I should have said

Edited

In this context it's pretty clear. Change agency for abuse. I'll leave you to figure out the rest.

But … dogs? What about dog pictures?!?!?

Google pictures of dogs if you’re so fucking desperate to look at them. The fact that you would prioritise your need to look at pictures of animals over the safety of children and the emotional safety of everyone on this website is actually staggering.

Sidebeforeself · 03/02/2025 08:11

Need some form of control at least. Im also sickened by people who post pictures of discharge, poo etc. Just totally unnecessary

stayathomer · 03/02/2025 08:11

Oh come on, there’s horrible stuff on the internet, do you think it should all be shut down? Op is asking that nobody should ever post pictures on mn ever- I don’t want to see horrific pictures but a blanket ban seems nuts and it was a lighthearted comment- I get I should have rtft

TethersMiddle · 03/02/2025 08:12

YABU

Bring MN in line work other platforms where users can upload photos. Sort out the screening instead.

I don't think you realise how serious this is. Are you always so unaware?

I really do hope that somebody has reported this to the police? This is surely the most pressing issue. Let's not forget that at the centre of this is a child(ren) who has been horrifically abused.

This reply has been hidden until the MNHQ team can have a look at it.

No one needs that question answered. 🙄

Horrific.

What way should I answer that, honestly?! Just think removing a whole function because something was posted seems surreal

Are you taking the piss?

To find that “horrific stuff” you usually have to go looking for it. The majority of major sites, eg Facebook, have tools in place to stop this from happening.

Aside from the poor victims in the images, many users were exposed to CSA images last night and volunteers had to view them all to hide them. Do you have any understanding of what they have seen? On a site were they come to chat to other mums? They weren’t browsing the dark web for fucks sake. It is traumatising, and due to the time difference in other countries, children sitting with their parents could have also been exposed. Do you understand how serious this is?

And yes, in answer to your question, I think any site that hosts these abhorrent images should be shut down immediately.

I received a mass email from MN about 5 mins ago saying they have reported to the police. I received it because I saw the images and reported.

I’ve never seen disgusting images.

Lots of cute puppies though.

Last night some one posted lots of threads containing images of child sexual abuse.

LillyPJ · 03/02/2025 08:18

UtterlyOtterly · 03/02/2025 08:04

Is stayathomer seriously saying that seeing pictures of dogs is more important than banning pictures of CSA?

I hope they don't come back to say it was a joke, that would be in appallingly bad taste.

I don't think they were suggesting that at all! It's saying that there are lots of kinds of photos lots of people enjoy (dogs, places, cats, sunsets etc) and it would be daft to ban them all in order to prevent horrible photos being seen.

NeverAloneNeverAgain · 03/02/2025 08:18

Thankfully I didn't see the images. I agree with a pp that maybe photos should be only available to members who subscribe. Maybe that would at least enable a screening for genuine people. Some forums have a delay where you need to be a member for so long and have so many posts before having access to all areas and being able to post pics. Might be a consideration 🤔

There surely has to be a way to manage this as the virtual world is vast and I hope this is not a regular issue across all forums. What are they doing to manage this and reduce the risk?

I hope MNHQ are going to respond to share what measures they are taking both in short and long term. It's a shame as I've had some really good help and support from this forum.

Lucky you. Be thankful you were not on MN in the middle of the night like I was. We are talking the WORST sort of images.

referring to preventing images of CSA being shared as “daft” is actually disgusting.

LumpyandBumps · 03/02/2025 08:19

I didn’t see what was posted. I believe others when they say they were appalling and people are rightly upset.
I do think that banning photos completely is an overreaction. As another poster says Mumsnet is mostly text based, so maybe a compromise is that the small numbers of photos which are normally posted should require pre approval.
This built in delay might also stop all of the demands for diagrams on parking threads.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 03/02/2025 08:20

GoldMoon · 03/02/2025 07:27

I don't think photos should be stopped but perhaps any post that has a photo should be pending until they have been seen by someone at mn.

Yes I said the same on another thread. That sounds eminently sensible.

napody · 03/02/2025 08:20

I'd be fine with removing the picture option. I like that MN is word heavy, picture light- that and keeping posts in order is what makes it conducive to better conversations than anywhere else on the Internet.

But several options for photo screening if they keep the option: manual, AI, no pics at night when volunteers on duty, long term posters only can post them.

meditrina · 03/02/2025 08:20

I’ve been around long enough to remember MN before you could post images

I have no problem with going back to that

And you’d need to remove ability to post GIFs as well

User860131 · 03/02/2025 08:20

Treeper22 · 03/02/2025 08:17

Good to know. Bit too little too late though. The police should have been told immediately. At a guess they could gather evidence straight away if told whereas now it's maybe going to be more difficult as the posts have been removed. No way would anyone be daft enough to share or screenshot surely so the only safe option is to inform the police the minute you see it whoever you are.

Bookbug92 · 03/02/2025 08:21

Why are MN not responding to any of these threads? Is it because the paid employees don't start work until 9am??
