REMOVE THE ABILITY TO POST PHOTOS COMPLETELY

FreshEgg · 03/02/2025 07:23

Yes I’ve posted in all caps because this is something that needs to be yelled about. It’s not good enough for them to be reported and removed, even if 24/7 paid mods are employed. They should not be able to be posted at all. I can’t see any 100% cast-iron system that can prevent such images from ever slipping through, and that is too high of a risk to pay. We don’t need photos that badly here. This is by and largely a text-based forum. I feel utterly sickened that this has happened and can happen again at any moment. Unless photos are disabled completely, no one is safe from being assaulted with such disgusting images.

This has turned me off using Mumsnet more than any previous data breach or anything else. I was on the site last night but clicked away when I got an inkling of what was going on and am so glad I didn't accidentally see the pictures 😡. Have HQ made a statement this morning? I'm still feeling very cautious.

Yes, me too. Very wary of opening threads.

They were responding to me responding to someone else that the images were of a graphic CSA nature, and wanting exact details of what was posted. Unfortunately in this case the person knew exactly what they were asking for details of.

Snowmanscarf · Today 07:24

I’ve never seen disgusting images.
Lots of cute puppies though.

FreshEgg · Today 07:25
Then you are very fortunate because graphic CSA images were posted last night.

maxwellparker77 · Today 07:41
Really? What exactly was posted?

Okay fair enough if I misunderstood. I know this is a very emotive subject to say the least but lots of people on various threads relating to last night do seem to be getting very accusatory and suspicious of other posters, as if they should all be mind readers. Understandable, I suppose, but people do sometimes jump to the wrong conclusions.

DeepFatFried · 03/02/2025 09:52

MN are absolutely pathetic when it comes to fixing the tech behind the site. Well get Becky with a bland, coffee mug in hand, delivering a there-there message that they are trying to sort it.

Until they do implement a proper safe filter surely it would be best to stop photos altogether. As a temporary measure. (Or however long, lo-o-o-no it takes them to get safety installed).

I have been on MN for years and years and value the site and its stance on free speech, adult trust, freedom from petty censorship’s etc.

But the endless ‘oh send us a screenshot / link to our latest tech incompetency that makes the site unreadable behind ads’ tactic seems to have been left as the fall back position for the poor Night Watchers who fell for it as the right thing to do “send us links to the threads’… what? Serious lack of training (not their fault) and naivety on MN behalf.

Don’t copy links to threads containing illegal images.

I am critical but I really hope MNHQ find the most robust way to sort this asap and come through this

I went on one of the threads posted. There had been no replies at that point so there would have been people innocently commenting and the these images put on it is beyond sickening.

I disagree. One night of people posting horrible pictures should not outweigh all the other photos that are uploaded every day and are harmless.

As soon as you saw one awful photo you would have realised the board is being spammed and not continued to open posts until the morning when the moderators would have removed them.

No need to feed the drama by clicking on the posts and being horrified.

It's not just horrible pictures though is it. There is so much more to these images than just that split second in time.

Perhaps read the opening thread from this online Q&A last year which Mumsnet hosted so that you can understand the impact of these images on the victims.

I am going to delete my account and move to Gransnet. The problem with the glitching on the site that hasn't been resolved makes me think they are having trouble with the advancement of new tech and their systems cannot catch-up.

BIWI · 03/02/2025 09:58

Is gransnet any better? It's the same company so presumably the same IT structure?

Gransnet won't be any different, it's the same company. Confused

You cannot post photos on Gransnet.

They're not 'horrible pictures' they are child abuse and a serious criminal offence. Let's get it right...

CantStopBuyingSeeds · 03/02/2025 10:19

I agree that photos need to be banned. 1000000% it's just not worth the risk. Please @MNHQ Please

CantStopBuyingSeeds · 03/02/2025 10:21

Thankfully I never saw it but I'm in tears after hearing about it and if MNHQ respond to this like I think they're going to (fob off) then I'll be stopping using MN. This shaken me to my core. Hell no

Fawn87 · 03/02/2025 10:23

They need to be banned at least until there's a solution put in place. It would be a shame to lose pictures across the whole site but the need control people posting disgusting images on the site is more important. I'm not sure what the answer is but I have never come across anything like this on any other online forum. I'm thankful I didn't see the pictures in question.

HOW can you possibly defend such monstrous vile photos being uploaded here?????

Perhaps it would be best for all photos to be pre approved by a moderator before being posted? Obviously wouldn't stop the poor mod from seeing something as horrific as that, but then it's probably more likely not to even be attempted to post knowing it wouldn't get approved.

AIBot · 03/02/2025 10:30

I didn’t see the photos, but if they are as described, I expect that the police are involved.

Minimising it and calling it drama is akin to defending it.

Lyn348 · 03/02/2025 10:45

Photos need to be completely stopped while MN get this sorted, it is vile that this was possible in the first place and even worse that there then wasn't even anyone to properly deal with it.
I'm sure it will take months if not years for MN to sort out ensuring this sort of thing does get through - based on their seeming inability to stop the site freezing or being taken over by fake ads - and this is too serious to wait that long.
Posting photos needs to be stopped.

What are you talking about? The offending posts weren't contained in links, certainly the one I saw was uploaded as an image within the body of a post. Anyone clicking on the thread unawares saw it as they scrolled through.

I saw one at 11pm, as did maybe about ten others on the thread before the post was hidden and a short time later, the entire thread was hidden at the request of posters.

I went to bed not longer after, thinking the matter was probably done and dusted. Very few posters actually saw the 11pm thread (which may have been the first) and I don't see how they, let alone anyone else, would have realised the board was about to be spammed.

Trupped · 03/02/2025 11:02

God how awful

kiwiane · 03/02/2025 11:02

It really shouldn't be possible - these awful images were uploaded directly with no moderation. This a is a site with a very large number of open users and there should be more done to stop it.

TethersMiddle · 03/02/2025 11:08

maudelovesharold · 03/02/2025 09:39

There's no need to blanket ban all photos - that's a very basic function on any kind of chat forum or social media and it was ridiculous that MNHQ took so long to introduce it in the first place.

I’ve been on here a long time and wouldn’t say uploaded images are significant or integral part of the site? Maybe I don’t go on the relevant boards (apart from Litter Tray). I could survive without posting pics of our cat, though….
Which users would it impact?

I spend a lot of time on the home/ decor forums as an example. It's hard to give or get advice without photos sometimes. The same could be said of the fashion boards.

You do realise, don't you, that Mumsnet is only post-moderated - that is, they only read posts that have been reported to them.
