REMOVE THE ABILITY TO POST PHOTOS COMPLETELY

Yes I’ve posted in all caps because this is something that needs to be yelled about. It’s not good enough for them to be reported and removed, even if 24/7 paid mods are employed. They should not be able to be posted at all. I can’t see any 100% cast-iron system that can prevent such images from ever slipping through, and that is too high of a risk to pay. We don’t need photos that badly here. This is by and largely a text-based forum. I feel utterly sickened that this has happened and can happen again at any moment. Unless photos are disabled completely, no one is safe from being assaulted with such disgusting images.

OP posts:
Zippidydoodah · 03/02/2025 08:21

I’m glad I didn’t see them and I hope the perpetrator is found and locked up.

Pennnyforthright · 03/02/2025 08:22

Completely agree with OP.

The point is that a lot of us won’t have known what had happened apart from this thread, and if the pp hadn’t read the thread properly then yes, a light hearted response may have been made.

your response to that comment is really over the top.

I received a mass email from MN about 5 mins ago saying they have reported to the police. I received it because I saw the images and reported.

I reported last night and haven’t received any such message. Glad to hear the police have been informed. 🙏

notatinydancer · 03/02/2025 08:24

I agree , photos need pending approval.
Those pictures last night made me feel ill.
I couldn't sleep.

SylviaAndSydney · 03/02/2025 08:24

Genuinely sorry for you all who saw them 😥

Maybe only people with a paid sub (does premium still exist?) should be able to post photos ?

That might work. It would mean a card payment which would make the perpetrator quick to trace and prosecute.

Tchagra · 03/02/2025 08:24

Photos should need pre approval from.site mods before they can be added on a thread..
MNHQ has to prevent something like last night happening again, it's not acceptable

If people don’t know what is being discussed they can simply not comment. It’s not the time or the place for “light hearted” comments. People that want to make them should go back to the cat and dog thread or wherever else.

This is beyond serious and if you don’t grasp the magnitude of it I’m really happy for you.

This reply has been hidden until the MNHQ team can have a look at it.

Isn't graphic child abuse photos not enough? Seriously dude.

HoppingPavlova · 03/02/2025 08:27

Google pictures of dogs if you’re so fucking desperate to look at them. The fact that you would prioritise your need to look at pictures of animals over the safety of children and the emotional safety of everyone on this website is actually staggering

You are putting your angst in the wrong place. Mumsnet allowed this by not having the tools other sites do to screen and prevent. Simple. With the 1001 advertising pop ups that occur, a portion of this revenue should be put to the use of standard tools most other sites use to prevent this. Then people could happily post pictures of their pimple popping/pets/parking diagrams. Not a hard solution and should have been done long ago.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/02/2025 08:28

I didn't see these images, fortunately, and of course the priority has to be to stop this ever happening again. However, it seems a complete over-reaction to say that no images of any kind should ever be posted again on MN. There are lots of threads where sharing pictures is useful and/or fun - Style and Beauty, Gardening, Pets of all kinds, some health threads, look at this birthday cake I've just made, which actor am I thinking of, etc etc. I find it hard to believe that there are no technical solutions to this issue. I don't pay to use MN and as a quid pro quo I don't use my Adblocker on this site. I would hope that the money the ads are generating are being used to keep this site free of images of child sexual abuse and other disturbing images, at an absolute minimum.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 03/02/2025 08:28

So glad I wasn't on during the night. Disturbing! 😞 😔
The only way, going forward is for all photos to be delayed and approved by mnhq.

Motnight · 03/02/2025 08:28

Bookbug92 · 03/02/2025 08:21

Why are MN not responding to any of these threads? Is it because the paid employees don't start work until 9am??

Or maybe Mumsnet is reporting to police/ having discussions about this and will respond to this thread when they can?

Problem is, Mumsnet isn't moderated.

Treeleaf11 · 03/02/2025 08:29

How about stopping the ability to post any photos at night

HoppingPavlova · 03/02/2025 08:30

Again, no. It’s not the ‘not way forward’. The way forward, and it should have been done long ago, is for Mumsnet to use screening tools for this purpose like most other sites do. Using man power to review photos one by one and approve is utterly ridiculous, and would cost more in resource than the appropriate tools to prevent, in this day and age.

Wednesdayweirdosclub · 03/02/2025 08:35

YesHonestly · 03/02/2025 08:05

The fact that images of CSA were able to be posted, multiple times, on threads with innocent titles on a site of this size is inexcusable.

There is no photo screening and no moderation overnight. We have raised this many, many times. This should never have been allowed to happen.

Why is it moderated by volunteers at night? Good God, pay someone to do it, someone who has power to do something!

maudelovesharold · 03/02/2025 08:39

Oh come on, there’s horrible stuff on the internet, do you think it should all be shut down?

Well…..Yes Hmm

RetroTotty · 03/02/2025 08:39

@Motnight is right. MN have a lot to do this morning regarding this appalling event, and legal advice sought, and therefore has to carefully consider any statements it makes on site.

OldTinHat · 03/02/2025 08:47

This is horrific and I'm so glad I didn't see them.

However, I don't think photos should be banned from MN, but, yes, some moderation before they are posted would be helpful. For example, someone sharing a pic of a dress or a plant, asking if anyone has seen one similar. A parent whose child has lost their favourite toy, does anyone know where to get a replacement, etc. And dog photos. And cat photos. And that fabulous thread about the pregnant Guinea Pig!

Other photos of nappies and bodily fluids aren't necessary, that's what the GP online service is for imo.

towelsandsheets · 03/02/2025 08:49

I didn't see last night but just to comment on the use of screening tools - AI makes it increasingly easy to design images that can bypass screening- it's a war of tech improvements

Kendodd · 03/02/2025 09:05

I don't think pictures should be banned. Best outcome imo would be the people making and distributing these pictures are caught and prosecuted. Hopefully the fact they were posted gives the police some leads to catch any perpetrators and rescue any children.
