Banner advert in the app

Hi MNHQ,

There's a banner ad appearing in the ap (at the top) that makes the app visually really annoying to navigate. Will it be there permanently? It would be less bad at the bottom! Thanks!

I've had a similar one (which I've realised I've been seeing for a few days) with Jeremy Clarkson as the "victim".

Tallisker · 15/05/2024 10:30

I've just come on here to complain about the Jeremy Clarkson and the Keir Starmer fake bruises ones. They are EVERYWHERE.

Come on, MNHQ, digitum extractum. These ads put me off using the site, it looks like a bargain-basement click-bait nightmare.

RainbowConnection1 · 15/05/2024 10:56

I'm getting battered Jeremy Clarkson or Keir Starmer every few seconds. What is going on?!

Tarkan · 15/05/2024 11:20

I've got the Keir one too. Weirdly it's only shown in this thread so far.

And since I accidentally clicked it as I scrolled, for @mnhq here is the dodgy looking link it takes you to:

@lemsipper

These adverts are everywhere. And as @lemsipper said on their thread domestic violence support?

Magnolia82 · 15/05/2024 11:53

I'm not sure if this is linked to these awful adverts, but I'm having real problems again today with Mumsnet draining my phone battery.

I'm hardly using Mumsnet at the moment due to the issue of the adverts on the app. But I have just used it for 10 mins today (just to try to check in with a particularly supportive thread) and my battery has gone from 95% to 55% in 10 minutes!

fedupandstuck · 15/05/2024 12:02

I'm another one with these bruised Starmer ads. Very off putting. I've reported them via the ad settings as inappropriate but there's no option to report them as obviously scammy!

RainbowConnection1 · 16/05/2024 19:01

Gambling ad is still there...

hjrl · 16/05/2024 21:04

I just don't understand this at all

I've been here for a very long time, quiet in the background but here. For all the things that happen I have never come across HQ being so silent and so uninterested. To the contrary I often think things are deleted or dealt with far too quickly without need.

The replies make no sense. The response makes no sense. Timescale wise.

I just don't get the rationale here.

whatsitcalledwhen · 16/05/2024 21:44

It's strange isn't it? Gambling ads are one thing but an ad all over the site for a whole day now, showing a politician photoshopped to look like he's had the shit kicked out of him... surely that's next level stuff and would be a priority to deal with?

EarringsandLipstick · 18/05/2024 05:42

Just back to confirm the Monopoly ads are still merrily scrolling away on the app for me.

@HebeMumsnet & co you (meaning MNHQ) are a disgrace. Completely unprofessional, running a business really poorly, one which generates profits & fonds salaries, with users and their experiences as core content, and yet you are entirely disinterested in their experience and even in being respectful or open about the current challenges.

WobblyLondoner · 18/05/2024 08:21

Just come back to check in this thread. I’ve gone from an hour plus on the mumsnet app per day (!!) to almost zero now that I’ve uninstalled it. For me it is less about the content of the ads themselves (important though they are) and more about the basic unusability of the app (& the website when viewed via a mobile) as this is the only way I view mumsnet. For all the reasons outlined in this thread it’s really poor. It’s even driven me back to Facebook because it has a support group for a condition my husband has - that has its own problems but far better in terms of ad location and usability.

As others have said, very unimpressed with (the lack of) HQ response.

WobblyLondoner · 18/05/2024 08:23

Ps this is an example of what you get viewing the site on a mobile (non app). Yep thirds advertising chuff; one third content.

That Kier Starmer advert - my god!

Why has nothing been done about this

BeckyAMumsnet · 20/05/2024 17:08

Thanks to everyone who reported the strange Keir ad – it should no longer appear - but we want to clarify how these ads make their way onto the site in the first place. We use programmatic advertising, which means that ads are automatically selected and placed by an algorithm, often through real-time bidding systems. We do not decide what ads to show or not show aside from our filters (which we’ll get to shortly). This process allows advertisers to bid for ad space in a fraction of a second. While this system is efficient and helps keep our site free by generating revenue, it also has some drawbacks.

We have filters in place to block the kinds of ads we don’t want, but tactics are constantly evolving to bypass these filters, and advertisers develop methods to get around our barriers. This is an issue faced by every site that uses programmatic ads, but once an issue is reported to us, we take immediate action to track and block anything offensive or otherwise unsuitable. We’re also developing processes to make this more efficient and easier for users to report.

We have a block on certain gambling ads, but because some have been categorised differently by Google, they appear on the site. We’re continuing to work on this as we agree it’s unacceptable to see those ads, especially on certain boards. In the meantime, it’s a case of playing whack-a-mole, so if you see one, please let us know and share the URL or the app so we can block the advertiser directly at the source.

We’ve introduced the banner ad on the app, to try to increase visibility of the ad format. We make far less money from app ads than from ads on the mobile site and it costs us far more to support the app than we make in revenue from it. This current ad placement helps with that, although not so much as to make the app anything other than a cost centre. We are also in the process of rebuilding our Talk apps - Android and IoS, set for release in the Autumn. As part of this, we are continuously evaluating the app's design and user feedback to find the best balance between user experience and the financial sustainability of the app. We’d rather not make it a subscription-only product though as we’re aware that not everyone has the means to pay for it. As always, your feedback is welcome, and we do take it into consideration, even if we may not be able to do everything that is asked of us.

Thank you.

teacher342 · 20/05/2024 17:52

Thank you for this. Whilst I don't like the banner ads at all I can live with the mainly static, non-gambling ones I mostly have now. I can understand your rationale being financial to an extent as most of us do not pay for this site, although I neither read not click on ads more in the banner position, so I am not totally clear how it makes you more money - do they pay extra to have it at the top? It's a shame you didn't post this several weeks ago. Users would be a lot less aggrieved if they understood and felt listened to.

KnottyKnitting · 22/05/2024 00:30

You are not listening- the banner ad makes the app on the I pad totally unusable.

It took me 7 attempts to open the app earlier and when it finally worked the threads just idled and needed to be closed a number of times before they would open properly!

Also explain why the app is making devices hot and draining the battery?

RainbowConnection1 · 22/05/2024 07:30

Tell us you want to get rid of the app without telling us 🙄.

BeckyAMumsnet · 23/05/2024 12:24

@RainbowConnection1 we're rebuilding the app!

SnowFrogJelly · 23/05/2024 13:44

The ones that keep moving drive me nuts.. it's a bad idea

Tallisker · 23/05/2024 17:03

Please rebuild it without the horrible banner ads.

EarringsandLipstick · 24/05/2024 04:26

BeckyAMumsnet · 23/05/2024 12:24

@RainbowConnection1 we're rebuilding the app!

Hmmm 🤔

I mean, I'm still seeing all the same gambling, scrolling ads, which are a) inappropriate and b) making the app unusable. So despite your convoluted explanations, you have completely failed to sort the issue.

I've never seen another app have the same ad-related issues, it just doesn't make sense.

You talk about 'rebuilding' the app but you don't seem to have a clue what the issues are, have terrible developers and refuse to listen to your users or reply in any professional way.

Endlessly you are told that using the app drains batteries, it's never been addressed. The replies on that are just hookum.

From a business sense, your approach is really silly.

If other organisations using apps can avoid these peculiar, inappropriate, user-unfriendly ads, of course you can. Weeks and weeks later - nothing has changed. This evening all I'm seeing is the Monopoly dancing dice! I don't mind about ads, I get they are needed - but not so they make the app unusable and not so they are completely contrary to MN's brand and ethos.

I'd be so disappointed if I worked for an organisation totally unable to address significant issues like this.

MermaidEyes · 25/05/2024 10:38

Haha as if I've just had a little box pop up asking if I like the new Mumsnet app 😆 My answer? No not really 🤣
