Banner advert in the app

Hi MNHQ,

There's a banner ad appearing in the ap (at the top) that makes the app visually really annoying to navigate. Will it be there permanently? It would be less bad at the bottom! Thanks!

And another if it works.

But none of these still images show how bad it is for the moving and flashing things for people with health issues around that. A screenshot is not the same as a flashing screen.

JaneJeffer · 05/04/2024 23:24

I sent them a screen recording by email last week so they could see what we're dealing with.

JaneJeffer · 07/04/2024 14:22

Just coming on to scream AAAAARRRRGGGG.
It's so fucking annoying!!

FantasticButtocks · 07/04/2024 18:20

@MNHQ - these flashing scrolling animated ads at the top of any Mumsnet page in the app are intolerable! I am having to read threads with my hand hovering over the moving images, it's like having a fruit machine in front of your eyes and provokes eye strain, headache and I wouldn't be surprised if caused seizures in those who are prone to them.

SURELY after all the comments on this thread you can't still think this is a good idea? I can't understand how it's going to benefit you to alienate and piss off the very people who are providing your site with content!!! Also, your responses on this thread and the reported lack of response to people's emails.... surely this can't be good for your image or for business? I have used MN for probably 20 years (Shock) and have never ever complained or had cause to... but this issue IS MAKING MUMSNET VERY USER UN-FRIENDLY!

JaneJeffer · 08/04/2024 17:11

It’s obvious Mumsnet aren’t going to do anything about this so I’ve deleted the app

JaneJeffer · 09/04/2024 11:17

God the mobile site is terrible isn’t it. So hard to use.

MaggieFS · 09/04/2024 15:45

I'm on my iPad just now, it's not great, but I use landscape and the bigger screen size makes the ads just about tolerable.

Haven't been back to mn on my phone. I won't.

Piss poor performance from @mnhq @LilyMumsnet @BeckyAMumsnet @JoMumsnet.

And if they had to read it... my five year old could have read it all by now.

I think we are at THREE WEEKS now.

JaneJeffer · 09/04/2024 15:57

I think they want everyone to stop using the app so they don’t have to do any of the updates they’ve been promising us for years

I think you've nailed it.

On the plus side my MN scrolling time is massively down (tho I may have gone down an Insta rabbit hole instead 🧐)

MaggieFS · 09/04/2024 18:22

That's exactly what's happened to me. I've never really used Instagram before. Who knew there was such a world of avian pets, plus I'm not even a cat person but seem to be a sucker for kittens 🤦‍♀️.
And don't even get me started on pet octopi videos...

That would be the most stupid decision and like going back 10 years. As more and more people are using smartphones and iPhone/android technology improves tenfold, apps are the way forward. For a lot of people, computers and laptops are becoming redundant. Everyone wants an app on their phone that's simple and easy to navigate.
I suspect you're probably right though.

Yes, agree. I’ve deleted the app because of this and the amount of time I spend on MN has plummeted. I still mainly use my phone but the non-app functionality is really poor so all I do is check in on a few threads I really care about.

JaneJeffer · 09/04/2024 19:48

Yes @MermaidEyes i only use my phone so it’s really annoying

JaneJeffer · 09/04/2024 19:49

The mobile site doesn’t seem to understand capitalisation which is a pain!

Same here. So much easier and more convenient.

EarringsandLipstick · 10/04/2024 00:37

@MermaidEyes I pretty much only use my phone too. However, even before this, the app has very limited functionality, and the new (and not so new!) features (like quoting quotes, polls, 'thanks', PMs) are unavailable.

I don't care so much but it is clear MN have zero interest in even maintaining the app, let alone enhancing it. Mad, I know, but MN business model is mad. They often sound like poorly trained work experience students, rather than employees with a skill set linked to the product they offer.

SnowFrogJelly · 10/04/2024 00:51

Currently tempting me with 'save big in El Gouna'...wtf?!
No point to these ads at all

Magnolia82 · 10/04/2024 06:37

@LilyMumsnet @BeckyAMumsnet @JoMumsnet @mnhq

Is there any update on this? As others have said, I've drastically reduced my time on MN and have just come on to check on a thread I particularly follow/find helpful.

EarringsandLipstick · 10/04/2024 13:11

I know @mnhq have made it abundantly clear they are not interested, even to provide a response but had a quick look at MN, lunchtime etc, & this is what I'm seeing.

Photo 1 - almost no actual posts / threads, only ads

Photo 2 - the scrolling slot machine one, again, which merrily spins fruit at you

I get the moving gambling ads on my phone, on ipad just the 'Mumsnet wants your opinions' banner, which is at least somewhat bearable, even if taking up loads of screen space.

I've got no interest in using the desktop version, so yes, definitely using the app a lot less.

whatsitcalledwhen · 10/04/2024 15:00

Always gambling ones here still. I don't gamble. This is only an issue on the MN app where every single ad is a gambling one - a number of different ads but all gambling ones.

Ridiculous isn't it? MNHQ will be hoping this thread dies so they can ignore it.

MermaidEyes · 10/04/2024 20:01

It's hilarious but also slightly disturbing how Mumsnet markets themselves as the most trusted and influential website for parents in the UK to its advertisers. Trusting us parents won't actually be influenced by those flashing monopoly ads?
