Banner advert in the app

Hi MNHQ,

There's a banner ad appearing in the ap (at the top) that makes the app visually really annoying to navigate. Will it be there permanently? It would be less bad at the bottom! Thanks!

Should we send a link to this thread to the Daily Mail? Wink

An example of how this “influential parenting site” is actively encouraging its users - even on boards dealing with addiction - to gamble and not bother our pretty heads about it as it’s supposed to be normal (certainly, that’s the impression that they give by continuing to ignore the concerns raised and refusing to give examples of similar social media sites where there is so much advertising Hmm, despite repeated polite requests Angry)

As most of us have said, we understand the need for advertising - it’s the sheer volume, combined with the permanent position of the new banner ad and the inappropriateness of the advertisers that we are objecting to.

JaneJeffer · 10/04/2024 21:36

Maybe we should just start chatting to each other in the DM comments instead. At least they don’t have whirring, flashing things there.

I’m just sticking with a couple of continuous threads I’ve been on for years now because I find the mobile site too hard to read more than a couple of posts so I can’t be arsed joining in with anything. I’m sure that will be a relief to many 😜

OneMoreTimeBaby · 10/04/2024 23:22

The moving/flashing ads make it near impossible to read threads. You really need to sort this out, I don't mind ads, I'm aware you need funding. But flashing ads that don't move from the top of the screen while I'm trying to read text is a fucking pain in the arse and no good for anyone with dyslexia or epilepsy!

I think I'll go try another chat site... or go back to reading actual books Angry

Wow, Mumsnet promotes gambling apps on addiction support threads. That's a good look.

@LilyMumsnet @BeckyAMumsnet @JoMumsnet @mnhq

Thank you for alerting us - we're taking a look now.

JaneJeffer · 11/04/2024 12:29

we're taking a look now
🙈

KnottyKnitting · 11/04/2024 12:43

The app on my I pad is unusable. Every time I try to open it , the app shuts down. This has been going on for weeks! How long do you need to "look into it"?

You will be losing a lot of readers if you don't sort it out soon and then where will your advertising get you?

MadamWillYouTalk · 11/04/2024 14:33

Thank you for alerting us - we're taking a look now. @BeckyAMumsnet

Yes, the thing is that's what @LilyMumsnet said over a week ago when the same gambling ads were mentioned (repeatedly!), however nothing has changed.

And you've completely ignored the feedback on this thread from users with disabilities who have issues triggered by the moving ads, which isn't very inclusive of you.

It honestly feels like you're hoping we'll shut up and go away, banking on there being a majority of app users who will just put up with the ads.

EarringsandLipstick · 11/04/2024 19:56

Thank you for alerting us - we're taking a look now.

Seriously @BeckyAMumsnet

We've alerted you over many posts, with screenshots, to the issues.

You've completely failed to engage.

And now you are responding only to the point that these posts are appearing on threads about gambling / addiction.

Really really poor & unprofessional. .

EarringsandLipstick · 11/04/2024 19:57

The thread was created on 19 March! It's 11 April now.

Nearly a month, no change, no resolution, no meaningful response.

prettybird · 11/04/2024 20:26

STILL got Gambliing ads on the Addiction Support topic Shock Angry Screenshots taken a couple of minutes ago.

Really poor show @BeckyAMumsnet @JoMumsnet @LilyMumsnet

Does “taking a look at it” mean just that - we’ll take a look at it but not actually DO anything HmmAngry

I’m sure that #DailyMail would just love to see how the uppity women at Mumsnet have no real principles and are prepared to exploit the more vulnerable of their users.

So disappointed @BeckyAMumsnet @JoMumsnet @LilyMumsnet that you are just ignoring us

OneMoreTimeBaby · 15/04/2024 07:34

As I've learned from the relationship threads; no response, is a response!

prettybird · 15/04/2024 13:08

Interesting but illuminationg as to@MNHQ ‘s priorities Hmm that on a thread where we have repeatedly complained about the plethora of gambling ads, this is what I get confronted with when I open it (on the mobile version since I no longer have the app and have therefore drastically reduced my time on MN no bad thing for me Wink) Shock Angry The entire screen - both banner and “in thread” ad taken up with promoting gambling Angry

No comment @BeckyAMumsnet @JoMumsnet @LilyMumsnet ?

EarringsandLipstick · 15/04/2024 13:12

I wonder why @BeckyAMumsnet @JoMumsnet @LilyMumsnet can't just come back and respond?

I know, we are saying that they just want this thread to eventually wither away, secretly want us all to stop using the app, have no intention of listening or doing anything but in reality, most of the time MN staff are at least responsive and aim to be professional, even if one mightn't agree with their decisions.

This is baffling. It's just ... rude. Apart from any business-related assessment.

whatsitcalledwhen · 15/04/2024 17:20

Mine have gone from all gambling to things that I don't think can have been approved by anyone at MN.

I appreciate agencies are used to place ads so MN don't directly say yes or no to each individual but something isn't working when it comes to advertising and as evident from this thread, it is turning users off.

Flashing ads also aren't great for users with medical issues affected by flashing.

JaneJeffer · 15/04/2024 17:24

Mumsnet doesn’t care about our medical problems.

Is anyone else finding that the mobile site drains their phone battery?

Yes @JaneJeffer.

I am hardly using Mumsnet now, but just came on to check on a specific, supportive thread that I'm part of and my battery has gone down by 40% in around 10 mins. (It normally takes most of the day to drop by that much!)

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2024 11:12

So MN have told me they blocked the gambling ads and are continuing reviewing other ads. I've reinstalled the app to see what happens.

That's good, I wonder why they haven't shared that on the thread though?

MaggieFS · 16/04/2024 13:04

I actually want the ads to go, for all the reasons previously stated, plus now I'm not using mn on my phone anymore, I'm actually wasting MORE time getting into Instagram, for the first time ever 😂

FOUR WEEKS TODAY @mnhq

Well on an occasional foray to the app today, there's a new ad for a game, with birds or something flying by. So still rubbish.

And MN have STILL ignored all the usability & accessibility comments made to them about the banner ads. @BeckyAMumsnet @JoMumsnet @LilyMumsnet really really poor not to update the thread

That's funny Maggie, I too have started spending time on IG, (since stopping using MN as much) and that's utterly addictive!
