Banner advert in the app

Hi MNHQ,

There's a banner ad appearing in the ap (at the top) that makes the app visually really annoying to navigate. Will it be there permanently? It would be less bad at the bottom! Thanks!

Hi @MNHQ any update please? The same is still happening and you seem to have abandoned this thread!

teacher342 · 02/05/2024 13:18

@MNHQ another one checking back regularly for your update.

EarringsandLipstick · 02/05/2024 17:58

I think @mnhq are waiting for the thread to fill up - some way off though, I think it's still at 400+ posts only.

There seems to be no indication they will address the issue of the usability affected by the moving ads, or the issue of the level of gambling ads - in fact, that's now all I see on the app. Just gambling ads. There were some weird ads written in another language / alphabet, but they have gone.

It's really poor - even if they came back and said, no, we are not going to change it - and here is why. Someone else said they will have agreements with advertisers and can't change it - I think that would be at least something to hear rather than ignoring post after posts and showing such disdain for their users and the valid points they mentioned.

Again, while I'm still spending more time on MN than I should be it is greatly diminished and that's honestly a good thing! So ... I am not sure if I even want them to fix the app now!

oracl · 06/05/2024 16:10

I deleted the app when this thread started as I was so frustrated, back for the first time since then. About to delete again so won't see responses to this

What on earth makes anyone think this makes for a readable interface?

@mnhq

Would it help if we all just posted this daily. Examples have been given. Why is nobody responding

I also just logged back onto the app in the hope this had been resolved.

I'm definitely using Mumsnet less, but there's one particular, supportive thread that I'm hoping to rejoin again next week. Any update @mnhq?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/05/2024 11:23

My battery is running down like the clappers again last night/ today too
Full battery to 10% in 2 hours
iOS
Can this be investigated again and hopefully resolved as it's putting me off

TidyDancer · 07/05/2024 12:44

Hello @MNHQ please could you respond to this thread? It's been weeks and the same problems are still happening.

KnottyKnitting · 07/05/2024 16:15

I am basically unable to use the app on my I pad because it either won’t open at all or the banner add stops it from loading. The app on my phone is not much better and is now draining my battery in about 45minutes. Surely this needs to be investigated urgently? Why are you not doing something about this? It’s been going on for weeks!

We've been raising concerns now for nearly two months and there are still issues - as evidenced by the continued posts on these threads. Sad

At least have the courtesy to provide a proper response Angry

RainbowConnection1 · 07/05/2024 18:13

The weird gambling adverts are still there, in dollars too!

Cabeza · 09/05/2024 21:02

The ironic thing for me is that I most often get the "tell Mumsnet what you think" ad as the banner 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes, my battery has just pretty much drained after spending just a few mins on this app. So frustrating!

I have significantly reduced my time on Mumsnet but there's one particular supportive thread that I was hoping to re-follow again from tomorrow and I'll be sad if I'm not able to be part of that group any more.

HebeMumsnet · 13/05/2024 10:39

Morning, everyone. Thanks for your patience with this and continuing to report. We are still working on the problem and getting these ads blocked. We've just made some more adjustments.

Could you try refreshing your cookies now? We hope you should see a difference after that, but please do let us know if you are still seeing these sorts of gambling ads after that (and any additional info on what they are and where you're seeing them is always helpful too). Thank you. Flowers

EarringsandLipstick · 13/05/2024 12:13

Thanks @HebeMumsnet I'm on the desktop version at the moment, and will check the app later.

Any response re: the wider point of ad positioning making the app unusable? And the strange non-gambling ads? Often in other languages that are so small as to be unreadable, but still take up most of the screen on the app?

And finally, any explanation for the utter radio silence for weeks before your update today? It's pretty unprofessional. Could you not have updated with what you were doing and the timeline?

teacher342 · 14/05/2024 04:49

Thanks for the update Hebe. I haven't seen a gambling ad recently, mine is almost always the static mumsnet ad.

However we are all still awaiting a response about the position of the ad at top of the screen. I won't outline it all again, as it's been explained repeatedly in this thread why this is an accessibility issue.

Can you please update on this @HebeMumsnet thanks.

Still seeing the exact same gambling app advert as has been posted here multiple times - this screenshot is from this morning, on the Mumsnet app.

I also think it's pretty disingenuous to thank us for our patience when we've been asking for updates for weeks and you've all outright ignored us. I've been tempted to start a thread on AIBU 'AIBU to think that Mumsnet is disgusting to take money for promoting gambling including on addition support boards', but I'm sure it would be taken down as a TAAT. Might be interesting to compare the speed of that to the speed of responses here actually.

I thought about doing exactly the same but instead I've just stopped using mn on my phone and just do so on my tablet.

@HebeMumsnet
Please could you also address the following concerns which were raised from the outset and have been ignored in the scant updates:

Usability / accessibility concerns arising from:
1: reduced screen space available for text
2: constantly moving images on the screen

No one begrudges mn having ads, but being done in this way in really poor. The previous update saying it's how all social apps do this was just incorrect. Those of us who use the app for its simplicity, on the other hand accept vastly reduced functionality, it's always been a trade off, but these new ads are a step too far.

Gambling ads in the ad space compounded the issues, but was not the only issue.

Please could you show some respect towards us and properly address these points rather than just ignore them.

prettybird · 15/05/2024 09:44

Is this really the sort of advertising that MN wants to be associated with? Angry

And no, I'm not going to click through to see what it is about Hmm

Came here to say WTF at these ads.

RESPOND @MNHQ

whatsitcalledwhen · 15/05/2024 10:03

It's now on every thread I go on. And because I know you'd ask me to click on the link, it's to a fake BBC news article that links to a fake investment scheme. So really needs to be addressed. It's all over the app today, every thread I go on.
