If someone starts a thread about Catholic priests I will contribute gladly I've a big axe to grind there but this is about the different issue of groups of men who have been brainwashed in to thinking less modest women and girls are fair game for sexual abuse and assault.

As a teacher at a girls school, the number of girls from certain ethnic groups that tell you they can't go to university because they need to look after the family home is very sad. Especially as some of them could have done so well. I suppose we can just hope for a gradual cultural shift

Hi all

We had some concerns about the intentions of that poster. Sorry it wasn't clear - we've edited our deletion message now. Please feel free to continue the discussion and we will moderate for anything that breaks talk guidelines.

Apologies, also, for removing the TAATs. Flowers

thanks for the swift reply Lily. I can't spot the thread on FWR - am I being a doofus? any chance you could link to it?

We can't really compare ourselves to Germany. Germany takes in WAY more refugees than us and when those incidents were reported, they had taken 1.1 million! In the same year we took in 30, 000.

LondonWolf · 28/11/2022 18:27

We can't discuss this. Anyone who tries to is gas lighted and told they're racist.

The slyness of that and the ignoring what is and has been going on - eg grooming gangs etc makes me feel physically ill tbh. There's nothing to be done. Our governments have decided this is the policy and we cannot turn back now. Eventually we will all be assimilated I guess - in about 70 years.

Zodiacsigns · 28/11/2022 18:27

ticktickticktickBOOM · 28/11/2022 18:10

I'd be interested to discuss if there is any remedial work done with people joining our society if they are from a country that has historical and deeply held views about the roles of women as 'lesser' people. Or do we not, as a country, acknowledge at all that this could be problematic?

I don't think the UK even weeds out convicted criminals when deciding who can enter the country. That would be a start. So I can't imagine there's any remedial work going on.

Antigonads · 28/11/2022 18:27

I know someone who ran the Life in the UK test. Frequently verbally abused by men from certain countries when their wives didn’t pass.

WakingUpDistress · 28/11/2022 18:30

The Life in the U.K. test has nothing to do with ‘settlement’. It’s fur people who are getting the British CITIZENSHIP.

The test itself is crap. Nothing to do with British culture but a lot of ‘oh look at how amazing Britain is’ full of false facts too.
let’s not forget the vast majority of British people wouldn’t pass the test either…..

Thirder · 28/11/2022 18:31

When I see the videos of working age men lining up to board buses or going to the reception centres, I think of the women they are leaving behind. What happens their sisters, mothers, daughters, sons? Are the societies that they leave now even more broken?
They leave for a better life, but is it with the intention to work hard for a couple of years with promises to return to their families with savings? Or are they abandoning their old life?
Two societies are affected; the one they leave behind and the one now dealing with the new immigrants.
Should the stragegy be to try to improve their homeland conditions to allow them to have a good life at home, rather than break up families?

iklboo · 28/11/2022 18:32

Definitely. Gods forbid we want discussion about the safety of women & girls.

Fairislefandango · 28/11/2022 18:32

It would be disingenuous to pretend that there is no difference between different cultures' expectations of how women should dress and behave, and to ignore the assumptions that some men from those cultures might make about women from other countries who do not conform to those expectations, and how they should be entitled to treat them. And no, that's not at all confined to Muslim countries. It has historically not even been confined to non-European countries!

You are quite incorrect. The Life in the U.K. test is for settlement. My DH just took it. You have to take it and pass it before you can apply for ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) also known as settlement. After you have ILR, then you can apply for British citizenship a year later unless you are the partner of a British citizen in which case you can apply for British citizenship the day after you receive your ILR.

WakingUpDistress · 28/11/2022 18:35

@Antigonads im nit going to say that being verbally attacked is right.

But I’d encouraged you to look at the test. Try it yourself too.
The whole CITIZENSHIP process is dire. It’s extremely expensive and is asking people to jump through stupid hoops.

Im not surprised people are fed up and angry. Just like they are fed up and angry when they can’t see their GP etc…
So yes it’s wrong.
But asking people to do a test like this before coming to the U.K.? You’ll get even less people wanting to come, here. People that the U.K. desperately need - like the nurses and doctors. Fruits pickers. People working in social care etc….

Threadkillacilla · 28/11/2022 18:35

If you are taught from birth that girls are less than you, unbelievers are fair game and your entire community supports these views then you add in English females reputation around the globe it's a recipe for disaster.
so many polital policies have added to the storm like ghettos and non assimilation it's going to take more than a few leaflets to fix.

as someone said on the other thread just think about how porn represent us.

Georgyporky · 28/11/2022 18:36

Unfortunately, there are plenty of men of ancient British lineage who still think women are lesser people.

Despite legislation, women are still discriminated against - no matter the colour/religion/nationality of either the female or the male.

Germany has integration classes (language and culture) as part of visa requirements for non EU people from any country as well as the citizenship test and language test for citizenship. I'm not sure the integration classes change anyone's mindset- they provide useful information for those receptive to it (and useful factual information on how to go about things for anyone) but they're not going to do much to change deeply internalised cultural beliefs.

Miss03852 · 28/11/2022 18:37

YANBU. The reason we have grooming gangs in every city is because no one wants to talk about it. These countries aren’t safe for women to leave their house alone but somehow these men will turn into Saints once they get here?

After Germany accepted all these refugees they had mass rape on New Years Eve www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/cologne-new-year-s-eve-mass-sex-attacks-leaked-document-a7130476.html?amp

Really sad that people won’t admit what’s going on. I grew up in Cheltenham and was never harassed, I worked in a nightclub at 18 and would walk home alone I felt so safe. Now I live in Birmingham I don’t like going out alone, I am harassed way more and it’s by a certain demographic. People care more about not being labelled as racist than they do about sexual harassment though.

WakingUpDistress · 28/11/2022 18:39

Well @Onnabugeisha ill settle to say we are BOTH wrong.

Because the Life in The U.K. test IS ALSO a requirement for citizenship.
And not everyone will need that test to live in the U.K. and get ILR. None if the many EU citizens have ever done that test. Same for their spouses, even if they are not EU citizen (as far as I know)

We both learnt something tonight….

The test is still crap.

Why not? We are a much smaller country with a higher population proportionally. They have a much larger land mass with only a quarter more people than we have. Of course they should take more!

I've passed the test, it's not "crap" it's just difficult. It's a couple of thousand years of British history plus facts about how to access public services, how government works, basic UK law, etc - it's a lot to cover, especially when you're memorising the percentages of different ethnic groups in the UK and the number of seats in each devolved national assembly.

Most Britons can't pass it without having to study. That's doesn't make it "crap."
