I think I always find it a bit jarring to hear how “advanced” we are in comparison to x or y country when we have a horrific record on things like rape convictions and have very little chance of retaining single sex toilets and medicine for women is underfunded and often quite callous. Our problems are different but they’re not minor and many posting don’t really know any immigrants or refugees or asylum seekers and have only the shakiest understanding of the cultures they are so frightened of.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 29/11/2022 11:40

i think characterising the concerns raised here as being frightened of other cultures is hardly fair

I travelled in North Africa and rural Turkey as a young woman. It was very apparent to me that the way women were treated there was quite different to what I’m used to. Being harassed in the street was quite normal.

No one is claiming we are perfect though, are they? Yes those are all failings towards women and girls safety and our government, police and society at large should be addressing these; no one is saying they shouldn't. It's very defeatist and pathetic though to say well as we pretty shit may as well not bother considering anything else. Also that's quite an assumption you are making. I am not white, I have family still in one of the countries people are no doubt thinking of, I do not have a shaky understanding of the deep rooted issues women and girls face there.

Itisbetter · 29/11/2022 12:55

I do not have a shaky understanding of the deep rooted issues women and girls face there. Do you think that makes you unique on this thread, in the minority or in the majority?

I DO think we need to discuss how immigrants are treated in the UK and how we treat women and condone the treatment of women in general in the UK.

Did you mean to reply to me? Just your comment doesn't seem to actually relate to anything I've posted.

Itisbetter · 29/11/2022 13:45

Yes I was pointing out that while you might have insight others might not. I asked if you felt that most of the posters understood, or very few to highlight that perhaps your take might be more nuanced but that wasn’t necessarily the generally held level of understanding. I ignored the whole “defeatist”/“pathetic” characterisation because I thought it was silly but couldn’t see how interacting about it was relevant or likely to be profitable.
im sorry if you were expecting a detailed and focused response to all parts of your post, that’s not a service most people are interested in providing.

How do you know that „many posting don’t really know any immigrants or refugees or asylum seekers and have only the shakiest understanding of the cultures they are so frightened of“?
And then when somebody on the thread says they feel like they do have a good understanding of cultures people are referring to here you imply their experience is not representative for the other posters - how do you know that?
It’s like when people claim that those who are most critical about immigration are usually the ones who live in areas with hardly any immigrants whereas those living in multicultural places have no issues - but I‘m not sure that‘s always the case, and I live in a town with people from many different backgrounds.

The gains you have made have actually been tremendous and a lot of work has gone into it. You don’t notice until they start slipping away (or you choose to live in one of these countries and understand for yourself how they can be)

Itisbetter · 29/11/2022 15:20

I don’t “know” what I posted was opinion, or asking for others opinion. If I was posting “fact” I’d probably say so. I do think an enormous amount of dross is posted about immigrants, cultural norms and religion on MN and in the media. We are coached and encouraged into a very polarised view. I don’t think that’s my experience in real life but I am aware that’s only one experience and am interested in others, and their impression and perhaps how that informs their views.

I have never heard of this. Feeling quite ignorant

Goingforarun · 30/11/2022 00:56

Same thing happened with young Irish men in the 6/70s and yes it was still racist then.

If young Irish men were harassing local women, it would have been an important issue to address, no? Why do women’s needs and comfort always come behind men?

Yes I don’t get the importance of women having to be silent over harassment

You can’t educate pork, sadly.

It’s taken me a few days to process this

without wanting to big myself up, I don’t generally move in the kind of circles where name calling is a thing

however, I would guess that the word ‘pork’ is a reference to what @FlissyPaps guesses is the colour of my skin. And is thus a racist slur

care to comment on that @FlissyPaps ?

Doesn't it also have other connotations, in a religious context? Muslims don't eat pork do they? myislam.org/why-is-pork-haram/.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 30/11/2022 12:51

So it could be a slur based on religion? Is that better or worse I wonder?

I thought it was a nasty Gammon reference too.

“You can’t educate pork” is not a racist slur.

It is nothing do with skin colour, race or nationality.

I’ve given you the meaning of the saying upthread.

You can also Google it.

So calm down.

& Have a great day ✌

Will you please stop equating misogyny within the British police forces to misogyny found in many places across the globe.

Were you sexually assaulted in the street - where do you want to report that?

A. Slough police station
B. Doha

if you said B then there’s really no hope for you.

Good post, highlights it in clear terms

Nothing to do with religion either. So again, calm down.

Its an old English saying that means “When somebody won't listen to reason.”

If you interpret it to skin colour or religion then that’s your own insecurities. Not mine✌

I suggest you go outside, take a moment to chill, breathe in the fresh air and talk to people. Talk to people of different races, religions. Open up your closed mind.

Ah so you are trying to simultaneously shut down conversation whilst calling others ignorant.

Got it.

UrsulaPandress · 30/11/2022 14:07

I doubt very much that it’s an Old English saying.

No, to be fair to the person doing the name calling, Google suggests it is an old English saying

a really, really horrible one that I’d be ashamed to use.

but each to their own, innit?
