How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

Please turn it off. I like to check to see if posts have added, when I want to look. I don't like having a big red thing glaring at me. It seems quite demanding to me.

TheChippendenSpook · 10/11/2020 18:29

I know that doesn't make sense!

YES! That's it exactly, the glaring red dot sitting there in the corner demanding attention. It's an irritating little c*nt, IMO.
Catmaiden · 10/11/2020 18:32

How do I turn it off ! I hate it! Please, please can we have a means to turn it off!

This.
BoreOfWhabylon · 10/11/2020 18:41

I hate this. Please turn it off or enable users to turn it off individually.

I want to keep my Threads I'm On and Threads I'm watching. The email when someone @ me is helpful too, but not this.

SoupDragon · 10/11/2020 18:52

Where is the thread of people asking for this?

MadisonAvenue · 10/11/2020 18:55

It’s really distracting, please give us the option to turn this function off. It seems very pointless anyway.

AcornAutumn · 10/11/2020 18:59

I’m so baffled by what it’s for

Comparison to Twitter invalid as you get notifications for you, not just that people are posting on a thread you posted on. I’d have it on watch if I wanted to, isn’t that enough?

Seems an odd thing for someone to have thought of.

forgetthehousework · 10/11/2020 19:07

@listsandbudgets

please make it go away. Not only does it keep changing the number - I can't seem to view them anway.

Still I'm sure I'll get used to ignoring it.

Mumsnet... what everyone wants is AN EDIT FEATURE (well I do anyway!!) We don't want notifications when we can already see from threads we're on / email notifications... I want to be able to change my posts if there's something wrong with them... please

I can't view them either, get as far as the option for notification, PM etc but no further response! It's almost as if they don't want you get rid of the. I hate this feature. Take it away.
cocopops · 10/11/2020 19:09

Please give us the option to turn this most infuriating feature OFF. Some people clearly like it and that’s fine but the rest of us should not be made to put up with it.

It’s ridiculous you don’t give people a choice over this.

AgeLikeWine · 10/11/2020 19:09

Please please just let us turn this thing off. It’s pointless, distracting and irritating. Nobody asked for it, nobody wants it. What we DO want are a delete button (like Twitter) and an edit button (like Pistonheads).

Ooooh tell me about the Delete button (I don't have Twitter) who can we Delete?
MrsBrunch · 10/11/2020 19:20

I have email notifications off and I would like the option to turn the red dot notifications off too. It's annoying. I don't want it and I won't use it. Thanks.

I completely agree, @BoreOfWhabylon
Ickabog · 10/11/2020 19:27

Another one here who wants the option to turn it off. I think it's quite clear that the majority of those posting aren't a fan of the new feature, and would appreciate the option to turn it off.

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/11/2020 19:29

We usually find ourselves in agreement Grin

LangClegsInSpace · 10/11/2020 19:31

As said we'll let things settle for a bit and see if folks still feel as strongly - if so then of we can look at adding an opt out. But experience tells me sometimes people get OK with things that they initially are sceptical of.

Wow.

The red dot is an annoyance but this response is infuriating. Why can't we have an opt out now? Why have we got to wait and see if we 'get OK' with it before we're allowed to opt out?

What would you lose if you added an opt out now?

And why are you doing this in the first place? How many have asked for this? Why not add the red dot as a premium feature if it's so marvellous? It's obviously wasted on most of us if this thread is anything to go by (please don't tell me the opt out will be a premium feature).

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/11/2020 19:31

Also you can't tell whether notifications are for PMs or thread additions without clicking on the thing!

How is this an improvement? HOW???

Ickabog · 10/11/2020 19:34

I think the answer to that is quite obvious. Wait and see simply means wait until enough time has passed that people stop moaning. Then there's no need to allow user to turn it off as no one's compaining about it, so no need to add the option.

Obviously i'm more than happy to apologise if this isn't the case and MNHQ add the option in the future, but I can't see it happening.

WorraLiberty · 10/11/2020 19:37

As much as I quite like it, I do agree it's unnecessary while we have TIO and Threads I'm Watching.

So is this new thing going to replace them?

Gancanny · 10/11/2020 19:37

Or "wait and see" means that the option to turn it off will be a paid-for feature...

I hate it and would like the option to disable notifications, the red dot is really stressing me out. Its like a to-do list that no one asked for and no one wants.

Mummylin · 10/11/2020 19:39

@MadisonAvenue

I agree 100%. It's utter tosh. P.ease give us the option to decide if we like notifications or not. In my case it's a big Not
Ickabog · 10/11/2020 19:40

Or "wait and see" means that the option to turn it off will be a paid-for feature...

Oww no that's a possibility. I know they promised more features with premium, and I don't believe they've added any since the launch...

Thimbleberries · 10/11/2020 19:40

Please let me turn it off!! It's so annoying and distracting

I also don't seem to have any settings in my account that I'm allowed to change any more!
