How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

now not no.

An edit feature would have been useful there...

vanillandhoney · 10/11/2020 19:42

I just got a notification saying "191 people have posted on x thread" but when I click on it, it takes me to a post on the first page when I've posted 5-6 times on the thread since then.

So what in the bleeding fuck is the point?!

DadDadDad · 10/11/2020 19:42

@BoreOfWhabylon

We usually find ourselves in agreement Grin

One of is obviously superfluous. Grin

I think it is punishment for not signing up to Mumsnet Premium.

MrsBrunch · 10/11/2020 19:44

Has it gone? Mine's gone. Well, at least, it's not clocking up the numbers like before. Fingers crossed.... thanks MN

Shhhh, don't give them ideas...
Dddaddy · 10/11/2020 19:53

I mark them all read, the page refreshes and I have more. Make it stop!

Mines still there, so don't hold your breath.
MrsBrunch · 10/11/2020 19:57

It's back

DadDadDad · 10/11/2020 20:02

OK, I've reset, so if you all could go ahead and stop posting on this thread so I get no more notifications, that would be greeeat .

Smile
Chicchicchicchiclana · 10/11/2020 20:02

Nah, I'm another one who really doesn't want or need this feature thanks all the same HQ. If you're analysing opinions, that is.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 20:03

Nobody tag me or PM me and it's perfect!

TheChippendenSpook · 10/11/2020 20:04

It disappeared then came back! Sad

FlouncerInDenial · 10/11/2020 20:04

Hi MNHQ.

I'm sorry, but I don't like it either.
Because:
A. I love, love, LOVE the little bell on the rare occasions I get a pm. I assume these notifications mask that?
B. I can't seem to get rid of the bloody things, even though I have marked them as read.
C. I'm happy to get the email notifications, sk I don't want to switch these off.

But if I'm not going to get the little bell any more, I shall be everso sad

TheChippendenSpook · 10/11/2020 20:05

And now it's gone again Smile

Gancanny · 10/11/2020 20:16

If I stop posting on threads, the notifications stop, so all we need to do is stop posting. Sorted.

AdaColeman · 10/11/2020 20:16

Mine are like Quatermass Notifications, they will soon overwhelm my inbox!
How can they be deleted? Clicking “All Read” only deletes the little red dots!

Mummylin · 10/11/2020 20:17

First night of this and it's getting on my bloody nerves already.

LangClegsInSpace · 10/11/2020 20:37

PP mentioned the Social Dilemma documentary on Netflix. That film was meant as a warning, not an instruction manual. At the end, they went round all the experts and asked what people could do to help prevent this incredibly fine-grained manipulation by the big tech companies. Every single one of those experts said 'turn off notifications.'

This is a terrible time to be introducing this feature, especially with no opt out. We are facing a huge mental health crisis as a result of covid and some of that will be to do with the increased amount of time we are spending online. It's more important than ever that we're able to set boundaries around that and choose what to ignore.

You're not making parents' lives easier.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/11/2020 20:51

@Butterer

What happens when you click on the notification link *@Blondeshavemorefun* ? I expected to not have to click again to even see the chuffing things - I was wrong.
Seems to be working now

But annoying to kick

I think it’s messages

HoneysuckIejasmine · 10/11/2020 21:00

The most irritating thing is there doesn't seem to be a button to go from the notifications page (where I've clicked "mark all as read" because IDGAF) back to active/threads I'm on, which I do actually care about. I have to just go back back back through my browser. Annoying.

The Social Dilemma was so interesting. I'm lucky that I'm not massively social, so don't use Twitter, browse FB when I feel like it and ignore most notifications.

But, I don't like being told what to 'watch'. I have my little routine with MN. Threads I'm On, then Active. I'm not going to change that because there's a little red dot in the corner. It's just unnecessary intrusion, IMO.

Lougle · 10/11/2020 21:16

And my button isn't working again...
