How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

I know it's not hard @HokeyWokey. Hmm.

SoupDragon · 10/11/2020 17:45

@SunshineCake

I know it's not hard *@HokeyWokey*. Hmm.
Do you know what is even less hard? Not having to do it at all 😂😂
SoupDragon · 10/11/2020 17:46

As an aside, why is it "mark all as read" and not "delete all"? Do they just hang around for ever?

PurpleDaisies · 10/11/2020 17:47

@HokeyWokey

If MN want suggestions to improve they should use different symbols for different notifications so you can easily see if you have been @ at

I rarely check the email I signed up to MN with, I cba to check regularly if someone has tagged me. Much easier to see in a notification.

I don’t want to see that. Before, I was able to turn it off. That option no longer seems to be available.

But apparently we will all get used to it.

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 17:47

Oh you do get a different symbol for an @. Even better.

alwayslearning789 · 10/11/2020 17:48

Love this new feature:) Thanks!

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 17:48

Well nobody has been able to explain adequately what is so ground breaking and amazing here. Confused

MillicentMartha · 10/11/2020 17:48

Please make it so we can turn them off. It’s shite. I only want to know if I’ve been PMed.

MillicentMartha · 10/11/2020 17:54

We get it, @HokeyWokey, you love it, it’s the best thing ever ‘for you’. Do you understand that you’re in a tiny minority, and that not everyone has to agree with you?

LeGrandBleu · 10/11/2020 17:58

For years we have asked to be able to edit a post, even only for a limited time, 5 minutes to correct them. Never happened.
Or the ability to only quote a segment of a post and not the whole thing, especially in the very long posts. So we still have to use the ** to highlight a sentence or comment.

I don't recall anyone saying they needed to add a red dot for notification.

I understand why you do - social dilemma on Netflix explained it very well - but this attempt to increase our retention with something that isn't you, I am not sure.

I might have been on MN for too many years, so seeing it losing its identity like a teenager testing water left and right is just sad. You can't just pick a features here and there from other successful platform and push them here.

When I see that dot, and in the time it took me to write these lines, I had 20 new notifications (I shouldn't have posted a link in the vaccine discussion), it looks to me as desperation.

Maybe I am too old.

Not everyone on MN has to hate it either. I do know MNetters don't like change though.

I'm not going to stop posting on this thread just because I've not had an attack of the vapors over a tiny red number.

MarshaBradyo · 10/11/2020 18:09

Not everyone has to hate it no. But at least give option to turn it off for those that don’t want it.

I've been on MN a long time too, and I'm pleased they are updating the site.

Just need an edit button now.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 18:16

If someone could actually explain why this new function is so amazing I am all ears. What are these other sites where it's used to great effect? Maybe I could have a look.

Lougle · 10/11/2020 18:18

My button is now working....

Blondiney · 10/11/2020 18:19

Sooo...there's no way to turn it off then? An 'opt out' if you will.

Nope and mumsnet have confirmed they wont be adding one yet. We apparently have to give it time and we will get used to it.

I'm pleased they are too.

But as with other sites, it should be optional, not forced on people.

noblegiraffe · 10/11/2020 18:23

The number disappears and reappears apparently at random. The disappearance or reappearance bears no relation to any activity on any threads.

How am I supposed to tell when I get a PM? That notification seems to have disappeared?

Also, I keep being told that there are new posts on thread ('3 hours ago') that haven't been posted on since September.

If it worked consistently, if there were separate icons for PMs, thread notifications and @s then this could be fine but at the moment as a feature it's actively worse as I'm now missing stuff I wanted to see.

LeGrandBleu · 10/11/2020 18:24

It is the trying to enforce a behaviour which is manipulative.

Blondiney · 10/11/2020 18:25

We will, will we. Grin

noblegiraffe · 10/11/2020 18:26

@MNHQ me viewing a thread to see what the notification was about has bumped it to the top of the list. I don't need to be told as a priority that I viewed a thread 22 seconds ago that hasn't been posted on in months.

AcornAutumn · 10/11/2020 18:27

I came on here to ask about this

I find it annoying.

TeddyIsaHe · 10/11/2020 18:27

I don’t mind it, but I did think I’d caused a stir somewhere and had tons of PMs 😂

An edit function would have been FAR preferable, and actually something people want though.
