How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

It annoys people because it's a constant reminder that there is some kind of 'work' for people to do. Pointless work.

LittleMissLockdown · 10/11/2020 17:21

It's a tiny red number. I have no idea why it would annoy people so much.

I personally don't like it because it's actually quite prominent on a small phone screen and pretty distracting every time the page loads. I also don't think it's necessary but apparently I'll get used to it. Wink

mogloveseggs · 10/11/2020 17:23
@mogloveseggs if you refresh the page the number on the notification should disappear.
Thank you

BertieBotts · 10/11/2020 17:24

I have the option unticked to automatically watch threads I post on, thank god! I can cope with it if it's just

Could you please aggregate mentions as well? I had two identical notifcations for a mention in the same thread which was an error as the poster's comment was duplicated.

Also loads of people use @ tagging as a way to address somebody specifically in a thread, which I find really irritating but apparently isn't going away. I don't especially mind having a notification for that if it's just on this site, but I def don't need an individual one for every single mention in the same thread.

vanillandhoney · 10/11/2020 17:24

I've noticed when you click on "Mark as all read" It doesn't always clear all the notifications and you have to keep refreshing or going in and out of the notifications bit to get it to clear.

It's a pain in the bum.

Why won't you let people opt out? I don't get why that's such a controversial idea? @JustscreamMumsnet

BertieBotts · 10/11/2020 17:25

Apparently I didn't finish my original point but can't remember what it was :o "just mentions" I think.

GuillermoVanHelsing · 10/11/2020 17:25

As someone who turns off push notifications and ALL red dots on my apps, I'm finding it quite irritating Grin

Also on my laptop (Microsoft Edge) earlier, the box was popping out behind the top advert so I couldn't select the notifications at all.

bruffin · 10/11/2020 17:28

I had that problem on my laptop (thinkpad)

rslsys · 10/11/2020 17:29

Didn't ask for it, don't want it and it's not working properly anyway.
When I click on the link to the updated thread, it's dropping me at the start of the thread and not my last bookmarked place. Pointless!

SoupDragon · 10/11/2020 17:30

I have no idea why it would annoy people so much.

I think the same about the people who were annoyed by it not being there.

SoddingWeddings · 10/11/2020 17:31

Ugh, utterly pointless, please allow us to turn this nonsense off. I had 12 notifications for threads I'm actively reading. Absolutely no point to this for me.

DadDadDad · 10/11/2020 17:32

@HokeyWokey

I always wondered what the point of *@user* was if you didn't get a notification to tell you.
I get an email when I get an @ mention - it's rare enough that it suits me. Picking through loads of notifications isn't going to help me.
PurpleDaisies · 10/11/2020 17:32

I absolutely hate this. I came to site stuff to find out how to turn it off and I’m really disappointed that I can’t.

Can I stop people mentioning me instead?

SoupDragon · 10/11/2020 17:33

So just click and marks as read. It's not exactly hard.

Or just look at the threads you're interested in. It's not exactly hard to see if there have been new posts.

SoddingWeddings · 10/11/2020 17:34

Also, as per a PP, I turn notifications off on all platforms, apps, webpages etc. I find this kind of thing intrusive tbh, it detracts from my engagement with the site.

Lougle · 10/11/2020 17:34

The notifications and private messages buttons don't work in Chrome at all.

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 17:36

If MN want suggestions to improve they should use different symbols for different notifications so you can easily see if you have been @ at

I rarely check the email I signed up to MN with, I cba to check regularly if someone has tagged me. Much easier to see in a notification.

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 17:37

@Lougle

I'm using Chrome and they are working for me.
SallySolardel · 10/11/2020 17:37

I don't see the point of this

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 17:38

@SoupDragon

So just click and marks as read. It's not exactly hard.

Or just look at the threads you're interested in. It's not exactly hard to see if there have been new posts.

If you posted on it, I assume you were interested enough at the time.
SunshineCake · 10/11/2020 17:39

Apparently @mumsnetter was brought in because people asked for that to but I'm yet to hear from anyone who asked for it.

I don't mind change when it is sensible, adds to ease and enjoyment of use and we aren't patronised.

rslsys · 10/11/2020 17:39

Why the hell would you implement a 'feature' without the option to turn it off? The MN platform has been flaky enough of late without adding to the load.

Cascade220 · 10/11/2020 17:39

MarshaBradyo · 10/11/2020 17:40

Can you make it so we can turn it off?

SoupDragon · 10/11/2020 17:42

If you posted on it, I assume you were interested enough at the time.

Yes, obviously. I think you have misunderstood my point though: Just look at TIO/TIW and you can see there have been more posts. Easy.
