How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

I’m glad you’ll be letting us turn it off as it’s a bit annoying. But for the future of the function, it really needs to be better. I have a random collection of threads and don’t really understand why some of them have popped up, no bookmarks if I do click, and surely just clicking on the red dot should make it go away, rather than needing to either click on ‘Mark all as read’ or actually clicking on them all?

MrsBrunch · 14/11/2020 16:09

Haha, yay, I am up to 14 @SilkieRabbits

FlissMumsnet · 14/11/2020 20:57

MrsBrunch - the least we can do is try to get your numbers up for boasting purposes!

We're sorry this feature isn't working well and is not popular for everyone. We'll make sure this gets another look asap - sorry for any faff.

Smallsteps88 · 14/11/2020 21:06

another one hating it. glad to hear youve taken comments on board and will allow them to be turned off.

SunshineCake · 14/11/2020 22:10

@MrsBrunch

I'm on 9. Has been higher. Just ignoring it.

If you insist that we need notifications, can we please have a counter for threads and an envelope for PMs? I do t think thus happens- but I get PM's so infrequently, perhaps that happens- I've not read the entire thread, so yavd perhaps missed it.

Where in the name of God is the customise option? I'm no longer getting emails when I'm @mentioned. I've been round in circles, and the only link I can find is under "Mates" and is broken.

I dont know when it changed, but I LOVE the ability to delete watched threads straight from the watched page. Great time saving. I've just deleted a years worth of watched threads!

I agree, @InTheLongGrass. And some of us experimented a few days ago sending each other PMs. The bell that used to appear is no more, and PMs and thread notifications all get added to that single count in the red circle. If you click on that, the dropdown then shows the split between notifications and PMs.

My notification is up to 10, by the way... Shock

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2020 22:30

For PMs when you load a thread it looks like there’s a split second glitch when you have no notifications and then it updates with the number.

It’s not a glitch. If you have received a PM, the number of PMs will appear in that split second where it normally is blank, then is overwritten by the number of thread notifications.

InTheLongGrass · 14/11/2020 22:30

Ohh, I got that notification as an email, DadDadDad - but not one from earlier today.

Madhairday · 14/11/2020 22:33

Sorry, I hate it too. Really distracting to the eye and I keep thinking I have PMs when I don't. I don't need a thousand notifications telling me 711 people have posted on a thread I posted on. If I'm @ I get an email and I'm ok with that.

Please make it stop.

Clutterbugsmum · 15/11/2020 10:46

Can't you just make it optional like Emails.

I turn the bloody notification off on the computer because I don't want know or need to know if an email come.

What did @baroqueandblue say??

Quaagars · 15/11/2020 23:52

Came here to see if there was a thread already, and there is!
MNHQ, please make it so we can turn it off, it's doing my head in lol
I mean, I post on loads of different threads so every time I clear them, five seconds later the bloody thing is flashing again and within ten minutes I've got approx 905 notifications telling me that somebody else has posted since.
I don't ruddy care!
Make it stop Angry Grin

00100001 · 16/11/2020 13:27

another "can we turn it off please"

if I have 20+ notifications...I may as well have 0.

It's like me having 3523 unread emails...never gonna look at them.

SisterHelenoftheEternalCatchUp · 16/11/2020 13:54

Another vote for being able to turn it off. I don't care if someone else has posted on a thread. And I don't want to have to check notifications it see if one of them is a message. Which means obviously I don't reply promptly to my very sporadic PMs now because I just look at the red circle and think 'Blaaaah. More spam' and ignore it.)

(I miss the little red message dot, I was very fond of it. Whatever replaced it was not the same. But obviously it did the same job, i was just emotionally attached to the red dot. I clearly need to get a life. Confused )

marmitecake · 16/11/2020 14:03

This new feature doesn't seem to work on the MN app, nor can you vote in AIBU on the app? When will that be activated?

LittleMissLockdown · 16/11/2020 14:43

I read your comment and can totally imagine someone at MNHQ reading it and thinking 'wait, we have an app?'

I gave up using it and now use the website on my mobile as nothing ever worked properly on the app and everytime something was altered or added the app was once again neglected. It doesn't suprise me at all to learn that this new feature is once again not functioning on the app.

JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2020 15:09

Hi all,

A quick update on some changes we're about to release.

Following your feedback we’ve separated PM notifications from the others (Threads I’m on etc) - you’ll see a red numbered dot on the top right of your Mumsnet account icon for notifications from your feed and a turquoise numbered dot on the top left of your Mumsnet account icon when you get a PM.

We’ve also added an on/off setting to your Talk preferences - you will be able to stop this notification if you untick the ‘notifications alert’ option. You will still be able to access the feed from the drop down Mumsnet account menu, but you just won’t see the red numbered dot. (nb You will still get the turquoise dot when you get PMs if you have chosen to ).

Finally, we've been reading your feedback closely and we will be putting more emphasis on testing features with users in a live environment so we can try to avoid the glitches with rollout and get feedback earlier in the process. We have set up an innovation panel for this purpose. Please do sign up here if you’re interested in inputting.

Very much hope these changes improve folks’ user experience. As ever, please do let us know your thoughts.

Big thanks

Lage · 16/11/2020 15:49
