How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

I am finding it really irritating and very much want the customisation features to allow me to unsubscribe from notifications I don't want!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/11/2020 09:38

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. It's off!! Grin

Runningdownthathill · 17/11/2020 09:54

I’ve just unticked their box and cleared all notifications. It hasn’t worked as they are piling up again!

FlouncerInDenial · 17/11/2020 10:03

As am I @JanineMumsnet.

With numbers

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 17/11/2020 11:22

@Blondeshavemorefun

I still have nothing -

no notifications

no red dot

No messages

I should be so lucky!

Like many others have said, I don't understand why, when there are both the "threads I'm watching" and "threads I'm on" options to select, which we can use as and when we want to, anyone should think that we need to be notified every single time there is a new message on any of the threads, and particularly why this unturnoffable button is more important than the edit function which people have been asking for for as long as I've been on here, which is only 5 years, granted.

GuillermoVanHelsing · 17/11/2020 11:28

I give not one shiny shit that there's still a list of notifications there, I find it easy to forget about.

Just very happy that the red dot has gone!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 17/11/2020 11:45

I'm sorry, I think I've just managed to turn off the notifications by following a link to preferences from MNHQ. I can't seem to get to the preferences by myself, mark you, but never mind, I'm very happy not to have that red bubble there any longer!

JanineMumsnet · 17/11/2020 11:59

To those still saying they have unticked the notifications feed alert in their talk preferences and they are still getting notifications. As I said, you will still get updates on the notifications page. But you should not be getting the numbered red dot.

If you are still getting the red dot is it possible to give some information about what browser/device you are using. Thanks

Yup. Just to clarify that I am no longer getting the red dot and I understand that I will still be getting notifications in the background, just making a request for further modification so I can opt out of that too! The no red dot is an improvement, but a few of us would ideally like to have no notifications feed at all.

SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 12:55

I don't see a problem with there being a notifications feed - I don't see it when I click on the "my mumsnet" thing. It only appears when I click on "notifications" so I can just pretend it's not there.

It's not a big problem, it's just a bit annoying. Like a to-do list at the back of my mind. I can pretend it's not there for a while but then every so often I have to go in and clear it when I remember it's there.

My ideal fix would be to be able to completely opt out of the functionality. But it's a hundred times better now with no red dot.

eatyourveg · 17/11/2020 13:57

Its not letting me reply to pms - I click send and I just get a message saying mumsnet says ok and nothing appears in the sent messages.

Whats going on?

As far as I'm concerned, if I can't see it it's not there 😂 I'm very good at ignoring stuff like that. I couldn't ignore the red dot though!

dinglethedragon · 17/11/2020 14:45

Hi @JanineMumsnet

I'm suddenly getting notifications (red dots saying someone has posted) for VERY old threads - some in 2017, and none seem to have been posted on recently. EG this one from classics about the kitten moving from Durham to Devon - but there are no new posts?

@dinglethedragon this is strange. When you say you've started receiving them, how many have you received? Do you have the URLs to these threads?

Thanks

@eatyourveg this will be unconnected to the notifications alerts as we haven't made any changes to PMs.

To identify the cause of this would it be possible for you to send details of the device/browser you are using? If you could also send a screen shot of the message you get when you press OK, that would be helpful.

Thanks

@JanineMumsnet

These are the two obvious ones, I checked to the end of both threads and no new messages - but this is the actual URL that I get when I click on the links.

They've both just appeared today AFAIK in the list, near the top, as though the threads had been reactivated.

Are we any closer to having an "off switch" for notifications?

Please?

Pretty please with sugar on?

sparklesandmoresparkles · 17/11/2020 19:24
**@LittleMissNaice* the @mention* notification should take you to that specific post. Your unread notifications for threads I'm watching should take you to the last unread post on that thread based on when you last viewed that thread.

Are you saying something different is happening, or you'd prefer something different to happen?
@JanineMumsnet The way mine is working is that when I click on the link in the notifications section, it takes me to the top of the thread. It seems to forget that I’ve already bookmarked the thread just before I’ve clicked off it. Even refreshing the page leaves me at the top of the thread, which is a pain when it’s a long one! The only way it remembers the bookmark is when I flip the thread (which I don’t like to do cos it feels wrong to read a thread backwards Grin). I’m on the latest IOS in Safari.

sparklesandmoresparkles · 17/11/2020 19:27

@JanineMumsnet And now I’m also getting notifications on threads that haven’t been posted on for a while. Here’s one from the 1st November that has only popped up in today’s notifications!

WotsitWiggle · 17/11/2020 23:11

Same - just got notified about a thread from 2017 (one I'd rather forget about). It certainly hasn't had any new posts.

JanineMumsnet · 18/11/2020 08:24

Thanks for the reports of this issue and the URLs, it's really helped. We have identified the issue and we are implementing a fix
