How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

I want to turn it off. I hate the well studied psychological pressure of red dot notifications on social media. People should
Have the voice to receive these visible notifications or not.

Can you pease get rid of this notification nonsense?

I thought I had turned off the stupid @ thing.

I am getting notifications for threads that have dropped off my threads I’m on.

LeGrandBleu · 11/11/2020 00:19

@SpartacusAutisticus

It's not that long since members were asked to sign up to Premium to keep the site running, are new functions really a good use of money when money is tight?
Good point. I wonder how much this has cost... This notification novelty makes me look at MN with a different eye. Of course it is a business, but this line shouldn't have been crossed. Sorry, you have joined the bad guys club
CoolYourBeansMySon · 11/11/2020 00:23

Please turn this off. I'm getting annoyed with it now.

HerFlowersToLove · 11/11/2020 00:30

Can we just give it a few days to settle and then see how we all feel - as said it's a pretty standard feature on most sites? Thanks for the feedback though, always useful.

Firstly, that's rather a patronising response, and secondly, it won't be any less pointless in a few days.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/11/2020 03:40

Reminds me of the Facebook notifications. You can see replies on threads / tho also on TIO

I can live with it. When works lol

But need a different colour dot /sign so know when message is there

SilkieRabbits · 11/11/2020 03:57

I would like to opt-out of this, its very distracting on the desktop version and of no use.

Checkyourvoicemail · 11/11/2020 04:53

This dot is very annoying. Please give the option to turn it off.

Ickabog · 11/11/2020 06:41

Seems like the vast majority want a way to disable / turn it off. Now granted MNHQ can run their site how they like, but to me it makes sense to listen to the majority when implimenting any changes.

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 11/11/2020 06:42

There used to be an option for not automatically watching Threads I’m on. I ticked it at some point, & I hardly have any threads in my watch list, so I’m not getting the red dot too much.

I was looking to see how I’d done in but I can’t find it now. In fact there seem to be far fewer settings options now.

RinderTinderNotRinderGrinder · 11/11/2020 07:02

@JanineMumsnet when I click on a post in notifications it doesn’t take me to my bookmark, just to the top of the thread. I’m not great with change Grin but if I did start using notifications this would stop me. I’m using mobile safari on an iPhone.

I thibk I've only seen about 3 people say they liked it across the 4 or 5 threads on site stuff about the new feature.

Although as yet I've not actually seen a reason why they actually like it or anyone explain how it's an improvement?

I do hope they listen to the majority and install a way to turn it off.

Stopthebloodynotifications · 11/11/2020 07:25

Please turn it off because I don’t know whether I am getting any PMs now. I ignore the red dot because being told that someone has posted a comment on a thread that I am on is pointless. I already know this when I press the “I’m on” feature.

What is the point? All you’ve done is double up on an existing feature and obscured another perfectly good feature.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 11/11/2020 07:27

Don't like it. Won't use it.

The red is annoying. At least make it blue so it doesn't draw the eye like a warning and something that requires action. I want to be able to ignore it at the very least.

MLMbotsgoaway · 11/11/2020 07:29

The issue is that there are too many. MN if you could maybe refine what triggers a notification down to say - someone’s posted on a post you posted, someone replied to you, quoted you etc that would be better.
Even Facebook doesn’t send this many notifications!

SoupDragon · 11/11/2020 07:42

Reminds me of the Facebook notifications.

Which you can turn off or mute for each post.

SoupDragon · 11/11/2020 07:43

I'd still like to see the thread where this was requested.

I don't believe there's ever been one. However I can link to quite a few requesting an edit button / function...
Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2020 07:50

Well I have woken up this morning to no notifications. Sad Nobody has tagged me and no PMs. This function is not good for self esteem.

SoupDragon · 11/11/2020 08:01

However I can link to quite a few requesting an edit button / function...

And I can probably link to more than a few requesting that things be fixed but it's not really relevant.

Apparently this has been requested by "some users" and I'm curious as to where.

That's my point. It's easy to find threads where people have asked for edit buttons, or fixes like you describe. So the fact that searching hasn't revealed any threads where people have asked for more notifcations, shows people haven't asked for it.

I'd send you one to make you feel better Wink but I can't be bothered with the notification telling me that you'd replied Grin
