How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

Not really sure why there is an uproar here, it’s a tiny red dot, hardly intrusive

It’s also an easy way to see if threads you’re following have folks adding to them, it’s just a high level summary, means you don’t need to scroll through the threads you can just click on the one you want to see again ans see the new posts.

It’s just an additional feature. Some folks are acting like mnhq have cancelled Xmas, 😂

Bluntness100 · 10/11/2020 21:19

I love, love, LOVE the little bell on the rare occasions I get a pm. I assume these notifications mask that

No you get a second red dot thing.

noblegiraffe · 10/11/2020 21:22

I had a PM today and no second red dot to tell me. Could have easily missed it.

So it’s annoying and it’s not even working.

grapewine · 10/11/2020 21:23

@vanillandhoney

It's pointless. It's just what the "threads I'm on/watching" function is for.

Why can't we turn it off?

I came here to say exactly this. Entirely pointless feature and meanwhile, we can't get an edit function. Laughable.
Miriel · 10/11/2020 21:24

I found this thread when looking for a way to turn this off, so here's one more asking for an opt-out. I don't see what the issue is with having the feature available for those who would like it, and an off button for those who would rather not have it. It's distracting and if I want to look at threads I'm on or am watching, there's already a very easy way to do that.

Bluntness100 · 10/11/2020 21:25

I had a second red dot for my pm

Honestly they haven’t removed any functionality, it’s just an added feature, it’s a tiny red dot. If you don’t like it don’t use it, you can still use the site the way you used to.

It’s an added feature, use it or don’t, it doesn’t need to change how anyone uses the site, it’s all good,

LangClegsInSpace · 10/11/2020 21:35

@LeGrandBleu

It is the trying to enforce a behaviour which is manipulative.
In a nutshell.
noblegiraffe · 10/11/2020 21:36

No, it’s fine for you because it’s working for you. It’s not working for me and now I can’t tell when I get a PM.

I’m sure you understand that’s a reasonable complaint to have, that the site is now actively worse than it was before the change.

PurpleDaisies · 10/11/2020 21:38

How can you not use it? It’s turned on. I can’t turn it off.

TildaTurnip · 10/11/2020 21:38

I find it annoying and would also like an option to turn it off.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/11/2020 21:46

So now I can't know if I have a pm unless I click on it.

Other sites I'm on separate out notifications from pm notifications.

Nobody is trying to deprive you of your 'tiny red dot'.

Rather a lot of us would just like to be able to opt out of this feature. What's wrong with that?

If you didn't want to opt out you wouldn't have to, you could still use the site the way you used to (with the exciting addition of the 'tiny red dot'). You wouldn't even know which posters had opted out. It would not affect your experience of MN at all. All good.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 21:51

I am just going to ignore it I think, let's face it it's here to stay isn't it? Get the Like/Dislike buttons next and it can be a clone of all the other sites presumably.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/11/2020 21:51

I do not get a second red dot. I've just tested it. PM notifications are rolled into the general notifications on safari ios.

noblegiraffe · 10/11/2020 21:53

Yep Kitten, I’m on Safari too. No notification of PMs for Apple users then.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 21:53

Same here. On Google Chrome on laptop it just adds the PM into the notifications, you might have 16 PMs and one 'you've been mentioned' or the other way around. No idea til you click.
S00LA · 10/11/2020 21:56

I’d like to turn it off . If I ignore it I won’t see any PMs.

SoupDragon · 10/11/2020 22:00

Honestly they haven’t removed any functionality

They have. They have removed the option not to get notifications.

LittleMissLockdown · 10/11/2020 22:06

They have. They have removed the option not to get notifications.

Exactly. Prior to today if I had a red bell I knew I had a message and every other form of notification was disabled. Now I can no longer tell if I have a message as it's lost amongst the 20+ notifications telling me someone's posted on a thread ajd Icant disable these notifications.

The phrase if it's not broke, don't fix it comes strongly to mind.

bellagogosdead · 10/11/2020 22:06

I also came looking to see how to turn it off.
after getting excited that I had 8 pms Blush

Notverygrownup · 10/11/2020 22:10

I'm confused. I've got a red dot with a 2 in, for 2 notifications but I can't see what they refer to. I can't open "notifications" and I can't look at my private messages either. I just have a red dot. End of! Agh!

Notverygrownup · 10/11/2020 22:13

Still confused. Some of you seem to be able to look at your notifications "in your feed". What's that? I am on a pc if that's any help. Didn't know that I have a feed!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/11/2020 22:22

Nope notifications gone again

Click but nothing changes

Rafflesway · 10/11/2020 22:22

Another vote for turning off please!

Thought I was the only person who found this dot mega annoying until I spotted this thread.Grin

DadDadDad · 10/11/2020 22:23

@Notverygrownup - on my PC, if I click the My Mumsnet logo with the red number in the corner, it drops down a menu and I can click on Notifications. See screenshot.
