How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

I've seen a few complaints but haven't RTFT... I know you said you're leaving it as is for now @JanineMumsnet but if I could make a suggestion?

The watch list shows me roughly howany replies there have been. It's pretty easy to navigate where you got to on last reading and continue. It would be great though to have notifications only when the OP updates, and as you have already, when we're tagged.

It's really disappointing for those of us lonely in lockdown to see notifications and think we'll get some human contact but it's just dozens of notifications that a thread has a new (uninteresting) post Grin

I've just cancelled my Premium subscription and used the "Other" option to explain to HQ why. It's so lazy to introduce this with no option to turn off notifications and just patronise people by asking them to get used to it.

Adverts in threads are less annoying so I may as well have those back and save my money. Not sure my £4.99 a month will make that much difference to them but it might catch an eye.

Oh, so you can’t get out by paying? They must have thought this was genuinely useful. But I’m very confused as to why.
Dddaddy · 11/11/2020 09:32

I’ve hidden a thread because it’s upsetting me.

I’m still getting notifications about it.

That really needs sorted.

Good for you! Maybe they will actually listen if premium members start to cancel.

As yet I've not seen anyone actually explain how it's an improvement or what is ao good about it...

cbt944 · 11/11/2020 09:46

It's foul. I am getting repeat little red dots that irritate and draw the eye, and when I go to "mark all as read", again, I see I am getting notifications for threads I have put on my "hide" list as they are too upsetting...

I do the "mark all as read" it goes away for a few blessed seconds, and then it's back. I don't want it. Please give us an opt out of this "feature".

Stopthebloodynotifications · 11/11/2020 09:51

The notifications are like Spam, in my view. Interesting point that using Premium makes no difference either.

mycatlovesmenotyou · 11/11/2020 09:55

Mumsnet - please take notice of how many people DO NOT want these notifications.

I am a grown up who is capable of seeing "threads I'm on" and seeing that people have posted etc. I do not want to receive a notification every single time somebody posts on a thread that I am on or watching.

I disable all notifications on my phone apps, I disable all notifications on my computer.

I don't want to see the red number every time I go into MN and I do not want to have to "mark as read" every time just to get rid of them. They serve no usual purpose at all for a lot of people and are just a nuisance.

You really do need to make this a feature that can be turned off, please please please!

JustineMumsnet · 11/11/2020 10:33

Hi again,
Thanks for all the feedback - it's clear this remains really annoying for quite a few so we're going to add an option to turn the red dot off. May take a week or so, so hang on in there and thanks in advance for your patience.

SoupDragon · 11/11/2020 10:35

Hurrah!

(And you might want to buy Janine cake/a bottle of gin/whatever... I think she is rocking in the corner over there somewhere...

Dddaddy · 11/11/2020 10:36

Thank you @JustineMumsnet!

Can I just draw your attention to the way it’s working for threads that people have hidden? Is there a way to disable it notifying if you’ve hidden a thread?

Ickabog · 11/11/2020 10:36

we're going to add an option to turn the red dot off.

Thank you for listening.

LittleMissLockdown · 11/11/2020 10:37

Oh thank goodness for that!!

As a side note whilst we have you, I've heard a rumour that some people would like an edit button... Wink

PurpleDaisies · 11/11/2020 10:37

Excellent news. Thanks!

Yes, this is a bug and we're working on this. Should be fixed in next few days. Apols for that.
MarshaBradyo · 11/11/2020 10:40

Phew - good one for hearing us

Well some would and some wouldn't tbh. However I promise it's on our to do list but cannot promise it's imminent.
grapewine · 11/11/2020 10:57

Good.

I really can't understand the reluctance wrt adding an option to edit posts, eg with a two or three minute limit, though. But oh well.

FlouncerInDenial · 11/11/2020 11:08

@JanineMumsnet
Genuine thanks Flowers

AdaColeman · 11/11/2020 11:09

@JustineMumsnet
When you say "turn the red dot off" I hope that will not be merely a cosmetic tweak, and that we will have the option to opt out/turn off these Notifications?

rslsys · 11/11/2020 11:10

Can't you just turn the bloody thing off and bring it back when you've 'mended' it?
It was turned off for a while earlier in the week.

steppemum · 11/11/2020 11:20

Can I ask.
If you get a PM will it just appear as the same red dot?

In other words, if I am ignoring the 20+ notifications red dot, might missing a PM?

I don't care about the red dot, but I really want the PMs to be seperate so I don't miss those.

I woudl also love the option that it is just on threads I started, or threads I'm watching, no matter how old the thread

Seeline · 11/11/2020 11:26

I can't see the point of it.

I was prepared to accept change so clicked on it to see how it worked. I then clicked on one of the updated threads. Instead of taking me to where I had bookmarked the thread (which I always do so that when I re-visit I can see that there have been updates), it just dropped me randomly in the middle of a 12 page thread. Assuming I must have done some thing wrong, or maybe I had unusually not book marked, I tried a different one, and again just a random location.

There seems little point in notifying me of fascinating new updates on a thread, if that notification doesn't even take me to the updates??

Luckily I usually use the app which doesn't seem to have been affected by the new feature. I generally only use my laptop to check for PMs, which you can't access on the app. And now I can't even find those easily on the laptop.

Afraid I have to click to see if any of the number are PMs @steppemum.

I've sent you one to test.

Does anyone actually want it?

Surely less work for MN if it just goes.
