First crack at a new quote feature - please check it out

Hi all,
We've released a new quote feature (finally you might say). I've attached some screenshots to show you where it's housed on site. Please give it a go so we can check it's working ok for all and across devices. We've taken the decision not to include threading for now - both because it would have been a lot more dev time and because it can affect the flow of conversations but this is something we can revisit in time if folks prefer. Please do let us know what you think/ further improvements etc. Big thanks.

@Tech

Hi MrsWooster, it should in theory be restricted to single-level quotes. We'll check what's going on there as it seems someone has quoted a message with a quote.
Ah good it works Grin
BIWI · 27/05/2020 12:00

One thing - could you make it a slightly different colour? I keep thinking you've deleted a whole load of posts!

Ajollygoodwrap · 27/05/2020 12:03

Oh that's a good one, highlighted (like the OP's highlighted post) maybe in a light grey colour or something.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 27/05/2020 13:47

Please explain why/how my post broke Talk Guidelines

Grin Because you dared mention the name of the "other" site that MNHQ won't have mentioned on this forum. Surprised you managed to post it actually because usually it gets picked up and hidden before it even gets posted.

It may be frustrating for you Francis but I witnessed the outright spamming and trolling of MN by members of that site.

If @MNHQ have taken measures to reduce this I for one am very pleased about that.

BIWI · 27/05/2020 14:45

Apologies @FrancisCrawford! Grin

It was, indeed, because I'd mentioned The Other Place.

And totally agree with @BoreOfWhabylon, the spamming that was going on (and still sneaks under the radar) is tedious beyond measure.

Agree.

Like clockwork. I suggest a bingo card for these sightings.

@Tech

Do we think allowing sections might be open to mischief-making? Like I post "I wouldn't say that Jimmy is evil exactly" and someone quotes me saying "Jimmy is evil." Stuff like that? Dunno.
Oooh...
homemadecommunistrussia · 27/05/2020 15:26

I hate it.
Just like when I am at work with my name badge on and some smarmy hit keeps using my name. BleughBear

00100001 · 27/05/2020 15:26

Coffee...we can do that already.

Tech said, and I quote, "Jimmy is Evil"

It's true. It's there in black and white and you can't possibly scroll up and see if that is actually what he wrote....

I have the option to quote a post, but not to quote a quoted post.

I think it would be great if we could edit the quoted text too so there wasn't just chunks of regurgitated posts.

But it's a good start!

Yes it looks like it works. Is this going to be for all people or are you going to change it to premium only after testing?
SoupDragon · 27/05/2020 16:09

Is there a reason you can't quote a post that includes a quote? I do understand not wanting threading but I just wanted to quote the bit that the poster had added, not the quote itself.

SoupDragon · 27/05/2020 16:10

(If it has been asked before sorry. No, I haven't read the whole thread as I am far FAR too lazy.)

00100001 · 27/05/2020 16:14

Any word on the broken formatting @Tech?

SoupDragon? Is that really you? Yes it's to prevent the threading, but as you say it should be feasible to quote the message not the quote (if that makes sense.) We'll make a note of that. I suspect there'll be tweaks / enhancements at some point. Not sure when though.

Hi We'll take a look at this - it should be fixable relatively easily.
00100001 · 27/05/2020 16:52

Should be :)
