First crack at a new quote feature - please check it out

Hi all,
We've released a new quote feature (finally you might say). I've attached some screenshots to show you where it's housed on site. Please give it a go so we can check it's working ok for all and across devices. We've taken the decision not to include threading for now - both because it would have been a lot more dev time and because it can affect the flow of conversations but this is something we can revisit in time if folks prefer. Please do let us know what you think/ further improvements etc. Big thanks.

But then you also wouldn't be able to be completely incensed the way you can now. Maybe that doesn't matter. Does anyone bold partial words?

Or we could just have a proper editor with bold buttons etc. Bit tricky on phone though. Hmm.

Hay que pensar en ello, supongo. Estas cosas no siempre tienen solución tan sencilla como puede parecer. Ay, que vida la mía.

Innit.

MoleSmokes · 29/05/2020 04:41

Partial-post quotes posts please! - I have never wanted to quote a whole post.

To use the new function to quote a whole post and then use asterisks to re-quote the relevant part just uses up loads more screen space than necessary.

ZCZC_ZCZC_ZZZZ TeenPlusTwenties] Did I just say this? testing
Is this what people have been playing with.

@Tech I have never seen people bolding part of words, except by mistake when discussing 6th form grades.

LaChatte · 29/05/2020 06:52

@Tech Android version 10. Talk app version 3.13. I'll go and check for updates, I thought they were set to automatic, perhaps not!

00100001 · 29/05/2020 08:56

@Tech

Hi, sorry, I missed all the ZCZC_ZCZCZZZZ excitement earlier. *@LaChatte* which app are you on? Is it iphone or android? Do you know which version? The text that comes to your app from our server says things like ZCZCZCZC_ZZZZ tech] this is a quote
but then the app is supposed to interpret that and turn it into a proper quote display. Weird if that's not happening. Unless you have a very old version of the app? Do you happen to know which one you have?

@00100001 the behaviour you've been seeing when you send that form of text in from the browser is happening because the bit of code that makes that quotes behind the scenes is getting confused when that string of characters comes in from outside rather than being inserted by its own processing. We'll have a look at that tomorrow.
@Tech. It seems like it's only that one post that is 'broken'

Yes, but it's only one post that it works in for some reason... The one where I hate people 😂😂

00100001 · 29/05/2020 08:58

Nobody bolds partial words

OvaHere · 29/05/2020 09:14

I've not read the whole thread so apologies if this has been raised already.

There's an issue with quoting a post then adding an image attachment. It adds the image to the quoted bit which makes it look like the person quoted posted the image rather than the person doing the quoting.

BIWI · 29/05/2020 09:15

Loving all the tech talk!

I have no clue what it all means though Grin just makes a change from all the coronavirus and trolling

TeenPlusTwenties · 29/05/2020 09:15

33 Did you just manage to quote my whole post and it not appear like that because of my
bit? That's clever. Smile

giantangryrooster · 29/05/2020 10:31

I'm probably alone with this. But couldn't you make the quotes in bold. I've seen the new quotes on various threads, I think bold makes it so much easier to distinguish the comments from the quotes Blush.

TeenPlusTwenties · 29/05/2020 11:09

giant I'm on a laptop. The quotes appear in a grey box with a dark grey line on the LHS. It looks nice.

Hi @OvaHere thanks, we're looking at that. We should have a fix for it in the next few days.
MoleSmokes · 29/05/2020 12:05

Tech is it possible that you could make your posts blue like other Official Mumsnet posts to make them stand out and easier to spot? Smile

Having been on threads where people are using the new Quote function, it reduces usability because people are using it for different purposes and it therefore takes extra time and effort to work out what is going on - the requested "Partial Quote" and "Multiple Partial Quotes" would go a long way to solving this.

I am not suggesting that any of these are "wrong" - just that it takes extra time and effort to work out the relevance of the Quoted text:

 1. Quote used simply to flag a PP with the new post riffing off it in some vague way that may be obvious only to the person quoting.

 2. Quote where the whole of the quoted post is relevant to the new post.

 3. Quote where some part of the quoted post is relevant but it is not immediately obvious which part and it takes extra time and effort to work it out.

 4. Quote where more than one part of the quoted post is relevant to the new post so the new post is ambiguous in meaning.

I didn't realise how frustrating this was until I noticed that I was skipping posts containing new-style Quotes because it was taking up too much time trying to make sure that I had understood them correctly.

ps. Where do you find the codes for those "lesser-known emojis"?? They are wonderful! Smile

Tech · 29/05/2020 12:35

MoleSmokes, back in the old days (sucks on pipe in manner of wizened old fisher person) the lesser known emojis used to be seasonal and we'd turn them on and off at different times of the year, which became an event in itself. Eee, it were a right laugh (goes cod northern in style of Hovis ad.)

We are going to review all the comments here - as Justine said this a first iteration of allowing quoting by everyone - and there should be some enhancements in the works.

We'll quickly fix the picture thing and the quotes breaking if specific strings are in them of course - as they are actively faulty and annoying.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/05/2020 14:25

Emoticons, not naff emojis!Grin
You find them hidden in old memories.
The best one, obviously, is Dragon
But Archers , Chocolate, Brew and Gin are good too.

Didn't we used to have an Iris Dragon as well?

MoleSmokes · 29/05/2020 14:50

Thanks Tech - still want to see you all blued-up though Smile

ErrolTheDragon - stop teasing me! Grin

LaChatte · 29/05/2020 15:04

@Tech you should definitely be blue! All my stuff is up to date, not sure why I'm getting all code and no pretty stuff

TeenPlusTwenties · 29/05/2020 16:28

I disagree. I don't think @Tech should be blued up.

If Tech is blued up then that means they have special access rights etc, which is not what you want them to have if they are trying out features. You need Tech people to be seeing what we the users are seeing not some hyped up 'admin rights' version.

I guess they need TechMumsnet for official Tech duties and TechUndercover why trying out features as normal users.
