First crack at a new quote feature - please check it out

Hi all,
We've released a new quote feature (finally you might say). I've attached some screenshots to show you where it's housed on site. Please give it a go so we can check it's working ok for all and across devices. We've taken the decision not to include threading for now - both because it would have been a lot more dev time and because it can affect the flow of conversations but this is something we can revisit in time if folks prefer. Please do let us know what you think/ further improvements etc. Big thanks.

Cool
HopeYouStepOnALego · 26/05/2020 19:44

Will it do this? ie display only a few lines of the quoted post and collapse the rest (which user can expand) to stop stupidly long posts?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/05/2020 19:45

Looks quite good, but as others have said, you really need to have the option to snip the post that is being quoted - it is rare that an entire post is worthy of repetition Wink

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 26/05/2020 19:48

@poozel

No option to quote on app on iPad
But fine on Macbook air running OSX Yosemite 10.10.5
PerditaProvokesEnmity · 26/05/2020 19:51

@Tech

Hi MrsWooster, it should in theory be restricted to single-level quotes. We'll check what's going on there as it seems someone has quoted a message with a quote.
Oh! Easy. But what if I only want to quote a portion of a post?

...

Tried. Can't. Would still have to C&P. So it's going to make threads alarmingly bulky ...

That would be good too.
allfacepalmedout · 26/05/2020 19:53

Well, I've tried it and it works. Good progress Smile

But.

It quotes the entire post, so if there's a sentence or paragraph in somebody's really really long post, you can't just quote that bit, you have to quote the entire thing.

It might end up making threads very long and unwieldy.

IrenetheQuaint · 26/05/2020 19:54

@AdalindMeisner

Can you quote a small section - for example a couple of sentences you wish to highlight or is it the whole thing? Which inth9bk would be frustrating if the message is long.
The quote takes up a lot of room on the screen and there is no option for partial quoting that I can find.
LittleFoxKit · 26/05/2020 19:55

@HopeYouStepOnALego

Better late than never I suppose. Maybe you could also add a click link at the top of the thread that allows you to see all the OPs comments only on that thread? We have that on another site and is very useful.
Please!
PerditaProvokesEnmity · 26/05/2020 19:55

@Tech

Do we think allowing sections might be open to mischief-making? Like I post "I wouldn't say that Jimmy is evil exactly" and someone quotes me saying "Jimmy is evil." Stuff like that? Dunno.
But it would be the same function as C&P and no one uses that for mischief. (AFAIR)

You're not withdrawing copy and paste???Shock

Ajollygoodwrap · 26/05/2020 20:00

Please don't withdraw C&P. I'm quite used to the ninja-style quoting, keeps me on my toes. All these new fangled convenience buttons always falter. Let's keep the 'manual' still Grin as an option.

Dougalthesyrianhamster · 26/05/2020 20:02

No option to do this on the app then?

Seconded.

Well, there's always that possibility.

But I can do that right now, can't I?

OMG @Tech I can't believe you said AND I QUOTE "Jimmy is evil"

allfacepalmedout · 26/05/2020 20:36

Who is Jimmy? We need to know.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 26/05/2020 20:39

@ContessaferJones

Confused now (it doesn't take much) Grin

I am on an Android phone and found it a bit hard to see the quote bit in my post...

The quote can only appear at the top of your post, and you can only quote someone's entire post? That really is not as useful as it could have been!
EatsFartsAndLeaves · 26/05/2020 20:40

And I cannot quote a post which already contains a quote.

00100001 · 26/05/2020 20:43

It's the evil Tech they keep locked in the server room.

that's by design ... to stop threading.

but it is annoying!

HopeYouStepOnALego · 26/05/2020 20:47

@Ajollygoodwrap

Please no like button! We're not teenagers! Instagram/facebook et al calls if you want that...or that other "lovely site" people keep talking about. I hear they have all the fancy buttons. We like old school with new-old features, let's dare to remain different Grin
There's 'different' and then there's 'still in the dark ages'. It's probably just as well you don't want anything 'fancy' (straightforward on most forums) because MN can't even make a good job of the quote feature!

I post on loads of sites, I've never yet chosen to post on one just because it has fancy features. I believe Netmums has likes and quotes and stuff .I wouldn't post on there either.

can we just quote a part of a post?

yes - thats annoying
