First crack at a new quote feature - please check it out

Hi all,
We've released a new quote feature (finally you might say). I've attached some screenshots to show you where it's housed on site. Please give it a go so we can check it's working ok for all and across devices. We've taken the decision not to include threading for now - both because it would have been a lot more dev time and because it can affect the flow of conversations but this is something we can revisit in time if folks prefer. Please do let us know what you think/ further improvements etc. Big thanks.

LaChatte, can you make another fake quote? S we can see if it's you or that one post?

Managed it, though can't read your screenshots as they are too blurred when I zoom in, so just guessed.
I don't like people.
Can you make up posts? What does this look like? In the app I can't see quotes, it's just all code.
I'm fascinated
00100001 · 28/05/2020 08:09

Lachatte - try a quote without your username in it

eg "I have special powers"

viques · 28/05/2020 08:10

@Shantotto

It’s completely mad you can’t quote a post that already has a quote in it! Surely you just quote the response? Every forum I’ve ever used works that way! It still makes it a million times easier to follow who is replying to who etc.
Just trying it out.

( actually I am relieved to have discovered where all the little grey boxes were coming from, I though it was people being techie clever clogs, but lo and behold I can make little green boxes too)

Please join in if you remember this one

Little boxes
On a web site
And they're all made
Out of ticky tacky
Little boxes
On the hillside
And they all look just the same

ErrolTheDragon · 28/05/2020 08:11

@sanityisamyth

Why can't you quote using the app. An option to swipe next to the post would be helpful
They’ve said they’ll be adding it to the app soon. Development on different platforms takes time.

Quotes display on the app ok.

viques · 28/05/2020 08:14

Sorry, grey boxes, though as my posts are green I have quite a tasteful colour combo going, sort of elephants breath and fennel frond .

I don't think fennel frond is taken yet if Farrow and Ball would like to discuss terms Grin

Lol, read the OP...and the dozens of identical posts

Lol, I did. But as far as I’m concerned the OP didn’t mention that. I now assume that’s what “threading” refers to. But not being particularly techy the sentence about threading was meaningless to me.

I CBA to find the actual post so resorted to the old way. Grin
While ‘nested threading’ can lead to confusion and divergence, with one thread spawning all sorts of offshoots, just quoting the response is what MN posters often do anyway in a continuing more-or-less linear discussion, so that might be a good idea to try out.

This is cool
ErrolTheDragon · 28/05/2020 08:25

I often want to quote just part of a long post.
So this is an enhancement request that if you select a section first then quote just works on that. Operating on a selection, else all if nothing is selected, is a useful UI paradigm.
