First crack at a new quote feature - please check it out

Hi all,
We've released a new quote feature (finally you might say). I've attached some screenshots to show you where it's housed on site. Please give it a go so we can check it's working ok for all and across devices. We've taken the decision not to include threading for now - both because it would have been a lot more dev time and because it can affect the flow of conversations but this is something we can revisit in time if folks prefer. Please do let us know what you think/ further improvements etc. Big thanks.

If you quote someone, do they get a notification like they do when we @ them?

Ajollygoodwrap · 28/05/2020 08:52

Wow! Wth is happening here with all the quotes and numbers? Think I've disappeared into another coding dimension Confused

Ajollygoodwrap · 28/05/2020 08:53

Every forum I’ve ever used works that way!

My first BINGO!

Not right now but it's a good thought! Thanks BIWI we'll take a look at this.

I know that lots of people don't like tagging and have it turned off. But it can be really useful. On Bootcamp, for example, when I'm responding a people's questions on a really busy thread, it means that they know I've answered them (assuming they haven't turned it off Grin).

I wonder, therefore, would it be possible - sorry @Tech - to be able to turn the tagging on and off by thread?

TeenPlusTwenties · 28/05/2020 09:57

I think the best use of tagging is to 'call' someone to a thread they aren't currently on. I don't think you need it on for quoting.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 28/05/2020 10:17

@ErrolTheDragon

I often want to quote just part of a long post. So this is an enhancement request that if you select a section first then quote just works on that. Operating on a selection, else all if nothing is selected, is a useful UI paradigm.
I was going to say this too, so quoting to save typing Grin

Agree with Soup. Being @ed multiple times on a thread does my head in!
MoleSmokes · 28/05/2020 13:58

@00100001

Err, i broke your quote feature..
That business with multiple asterisks happens in regular posts when you @/name someone in a post and also use asterisks.

It seems to be an underlying problem with the Forum software rather than the new Quote function.

It has caught me out several times in the past.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/05/2020 14:56

Asterisks as markups are great fun on threads discussing A level grades eg uni offers. You get used to parsing the accidental bolding after a while.Grin

Indeed, and also when discussing BTEC grades.

I just used the quote function and added a photo in my reply.

The photo is showing up as part of the quoted thread rather than with my comments.

@00100001

It's weird, it behaves differently each time.

See that made up quote that LaChatte made? That's what I see on that one

Back again...

We did think at one point of changing it to require two asterisks for bold, like markdown, but we thought there might be annoyance if we did that. What happens on A and B (do they exist) grades? I though the asterisks only worked up to a word boundary so those wouldn't be interpreted as bold whereas word without the spaces would be - like word. Is that not what happens in all cases?

SoupDragon · 28/05/2020 23:00

I think the problem is because a group of grade requirements is written as AAA rather than A A A so this is an issue when it's A*s rather than As.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/05/2020 23:25

The asterisk markup doesn't always do exactly the same think on browser and app and I've forgotten now what happens if mixed with bolding done isn't the bold button in the app ... insufficient cross platform testing.Grin

Tech · 29/05/2020 00:20

Hi, sorry, I missed all the ZCZC_ZCZCZZZZ excitement earlier. @LaChatte which app are you on? Is it iphone or android? Do you know which version? The text that comes to your app from our server says things like ZCZCZCZC_ZZZZ tech] this is a quote[/quote] but then the app is supposed to interpret that and turn it into a proper quote display. Weird if that's not happening. Unless you have a very old version of the app? Do you happen to know which one you have?

@00100001 the behaviour you've been seeing when you send that form of text in from the browser is happening because the bit of code that makes that quotes behind the scenes is getting confused when that string of characters comes in from outside rather than being inserted by its own processing. We'll have a look at that tomorrow.

Ah that makes sense, thanks. It should be possible to fix so that it demands a word boundary - so that it won't start bolding within a string of characters like A A A without the spaces. So no more AAA instead of three A stars.
