Mnhq, Please look into and fix the videos automatically playing on the site!

I think it's the videos on the side of the screen when you reading a thread.

I'm using puffin on an iPad.

Thankyou.

i had one break through FOUR times yesterday when scrolling through a long thread.

each time it had to be re muted

and NO, I am not accidentally clicking it.

BearSoFair · 13/01/2019 08:59

Autoplaying with sound on chat, club med ad then walking on eggshells video. Come on MN, surely it's not this hard to fix? If you can't get them playing silently or however it is you want them, maybe you should just remove them entirely.

WatcherOfTheNight · 13/01/2019 09:48

Hi @TimMumsnet ,
I had this again last night,it completely covered a thread reported to Nightwatch making it impossible to read the post that had been reported.
Help!

WatcherOfTheNight · 13/01/2019 09:53

@TimMumsnet ,I took this screenshot as when I got rid of the video the grey box still covered it.
I'm on IPhone 7 safari .
I've also had this problem in my inbox, covering the messages & space to reply,so annoying!

Bloody auto play videos!
SassitudeandSparkle · 13/01/2019 11:06

5 second ad playing with sound, there is a reason I've got an ad blocker for this website. Completely fed up of this now, I'm out!

SealSong · 13/01/2019 15:43

Autoplay videos WITH SOUND still happening. The advert is for club med.
Even more annoying, if you stop the video and start scolling down the page it starts playing again, with sound.
I'm on desktop, windows 10, chrome with adblock enabled.

Seriously I have never known a website as bad as Mumsnet for crappy problems with adverts. I've used this site for years so have seen the constant problems. One of the reasons why I rarely bother with this site now. So shabby.

WatcherOfTheNight · 13/01/2019 15:55

Does anyone know how to block ads on iPhone?
I've gone through settings & I've found limit ad tracking which is already enabled ,just wondering if there's anything else ?

yawning801 · 13/01/2019 16:05

Hmm, sounds like MNHQ are doing this on purpose... I wonder if the journos ever read Site Stuff!

cardoon · 13/01/2019 16:25

YY, I've never known any other site with anywhere near the amount of tech problems MN have, combined with an inability to sort them - always needing lots of information from the users, most odd

CassandraCross · 13/01/2019 16:36

Ads autoplay without the sound whenever I click onto a thread, they DON'T play on Active nor, bizarrely, this thread.

Chrome
Desktop Site
Adblocker

Come on MNHQ surely this is just a settings problem your end????

BertieBotts · 13/01/2019 18:10

Watcher, I'm not sure that's the same problem iothers are having - are you getting this on other websites too? Looks a little like a dodgy browser extension might be at fault there.

WatcherOfTheNight · 13/01/2019 18:22

Hi @BertieBotts ,no it's only MN & started recently ,I saw this thread and assumed it was the same issue.

I've never had this happen before and I'm useless with tech so was hoping someone might have a solution that I could implement before Trolling hours !

Grace212 · 13/01/2019 19:22

they seem to have switched to silent for me - though I remain baffled what the commercial benefit can be for MN. I also installed adblocker initially for MN, it did have some useful ads but there were just so many!!

the Club Med ad played on the mobile site for me as well.

PattiStanger · 13/01/2019 19:27

They haven't switched to silent for me, I was reading the incredibly sad thread about the dying wife when the pregnant women talking about mucous came on.

Totally inappropriate, I'm tempted to give up MN until it's sorted which isn't what the advertisers want I'm sure

Grace212 · 13/01/2019 21:29

Perhaps it will cure me of MNing all evening - it's driving me nuts!!

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 13/01/2019 22:52

As far as I can see they don't seem to care.

This doesn't seem to be a mistake but an active choice that they have made, probably in my opinion so they can use the statistics (how many views the videos have had) to show how popular their content is in comparison to competitors site.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 13/01/2019 22:56

They could have easily pulled the videos until they had sorted it but instead started arguing about data usage and talking us that all sites are or becoming similar so get used to it

lovestea · 13/01/2019 23:30

It is really really annoying and I am honestly out of here until it is fixed, if it is fixed at all.

Some of the videos are silent, some play with sound and some don't lay at all. It seems worse in Chat.

Come on Mumsnet. Do we really have to up with this intrusive crap? I have no interest in Club Med, Midwives say pregnancy is gross, Kids online, Walking on eggshells or any of the others. If I wanted to find out about these things I would choose to. Not have it shoved in my face every time.

I have Adblock Plus and I am afraid there is no solution to getting rid of these auto play videos. I tried BertieBotts help and the options were not available to me. Apart from the Club Med ones they are not really adverts.

This happened a while back and it got resolved, can you not do it again Mumsnet?

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 14/01/2019 01:23

probably in my opinion so they can use the statistics (how many views the videos have had) to show how popular their content is in comparison to competitors site.

Well, if all it can tell them is how many pages the videos are autoplaying on, not how many people are actively watching them, I don't think that's much of a stat. Advertisers would be all about conversion rates. And if they do have a way to track active watchers, then hopefully they'll get a realistic idea of whether the videos are worth keeping.

Buntybearbess · 14/01/2019 01:42

Happening here in the UK, Chrome Desktop site user. Videos vary but always autoplay and I can't stand it. Putting me off using the site tbh.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 14/01/2019 02:12

It depends on how they want to present the information gathered though.

If all they shared was the videos played x number of times without sharing any other information then these videos look extremely popular.

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 14/01/2019 06:03

Ginky, I think you're exactly right, it's to bump up "view" figures on Videos. I almost said this earlier but changed my mind because I was trying to be nice.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 14/01/2019 07:24

If all they shared was the videos played x number of times without sharing any other information then these videos look extremely popular.

It does but I'd hope someone would have the sense to ask further questions.

Autoplay videos are also crap for people using screen readers - well, imagine.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 14/01/2019 07:37

Same here

Desktop, Chrome, Adblocker.

Am not anywhere near them, that stupid woman just starts talking at me. Also club med and a macaroni cheese recipe.

All very dull and irrelevant.

TimMumsnet · 14/01/2019 11:45

Hi guys, thanks for the detailed feedback, it's been helpful understanding the variety of reported issues.

The primary concern we have with the autoplay video test is that some of them appear to be playing with sound, despite our best efforts to prevent that. Because of this, we've stopped videos autoplaying for now. Thank you for your patience!

We're looking into the other issues that have been raised, so please continue to let us know about any other bugs.
