Mnhq, Please look into and fix the videos automatically playing on the site!

I think it's the videos on the side of the screen when you reading a thread.

I'm using puffin on an iPad.

Thankyou.

Just had microwave Mac and cheese video auto play as I was scrolling through chat.

Yes just happened to me, on Edge. Firstly one about microwave cooking then one starting "50% of Mumsnetters said". Both with sound. So annoying and disconcerting when you're trying to read a nice thread.

SassitudeandSparkle · 10/01/2019 11:10

Still happening, I've had to go into my browser and stop all tracking cookies there because I think it put them on my laptop when the video plays. Really, really annoying and I don't know why you can't stop it.

mondaysaturday · 10/01/2019 11:14

Laptop on chrome, the all of the videos are autoplaying for me (seems to alternate between pregnancy is gross, the abuse one, mac and cheese and kids and technology).

Andro · 10/01/2019 11:23

Chrome on chromebook - the mac and cheese one with sound (I spend my life avoiding cheese in the RL, now I'm being haunted by in it cyberspace Angry )

fleshmarketclose · 10/01/2019 11:26

Yes for me too on laptop on Chrome, it's currently the kids and technology one but have had the others as well already mentioned.

AnyaMumsnet · 10/01/2019 12:45

Hi again everyone,

Thanks for getting in touch about this.

We are testing a few things, so there will be videos autoplaying at the moment - but they should only be happening on the desktop site, and without sound.

If anyone is experiencing them on a phone or tablet, could you please check you aren't using the desktop version of the site on your phone?

We will take on your feedback regarding this.

yawning801 · 10/01/2019 16:41

Claire Littler is still playing with sound!

yawning801 · 10/01/2019 16:45

And Sian whateverhernamewas. It's been fine for the past half an hour and now it's started up again.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 10/01/2019 18:43

Just you know I am on iPad but I'm using the desktop version (hate the app)

When the videos played they all had sound. That's how I knew they had started.

Still autoplaying here (Chrome on a laptop) though without sound. They're infuriating - basically to read a thread I have to wait so that I can close a video. Also a massive waste of bandwidth.

If you must have them, could you have the option to 'kill' the video before it starts, as on local news sites.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 10/01/2019 19:12

So Iv just gone on to chat. Desktop version, using iPad.

The Mac and cheese video has just auto played with sound.

OP posts:
DaysOfCurlySpencer · 10/01/2019 19:14

I have also just gone onto chat, still on laptop and that bloody microwave meals mac & cheese is still going on. I never have the volume on regardless but it is driving me demented.

PattiStanger · 10/01/2019 20:42

It still hasn't stopped, i've just had the domestic violence one with the sound

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 10/01/2019 20:42

The children and technology video this time with sound again.

OP posts:
Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 10/01/2019 22:36

no point in reporting each one.

All the videos auto play all also have sound when I'm on chat.

Using desktop version on iPad using puffin.

lovestea · 10/01/2019 22:39

Come on Mumsnet GCHQ, this happened once before and you stopped it, can you not do it again?
It's driving me scatty!

HerBigChance · 10/01/2019 22:43

Firefox/Windows 10/laptop here

I don't like the fact that there are T&Cs listed before it autoplays and I can't stop it autoplaying. If there are T&Cs I don't agree with, I should have the option to stop the autoplay.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 11/01/2019 01:34

Videos absolutely eat data!

It more than just annoying

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 11/01/2019 09:19

Yes, it's really crass to assume everyone has unlimited internet just because they are using a desktop/laptop Confused

AnyaMumsnet · 11/01/2019 10:03

Hi there everyone,

We're really sorry this is still frustrating you. Just to reassure you, we are still testing things.

As the user experience of Mumsnet and many other websites improves, unfortunately this does mean they will also use up more data. We always try to ensure that this doesn't end up just gobbling your data, but genuinely improving user experience.

sashh · 11/01/2019 10:49

I'm getting them too, annoying as I'm trying to listen to something else. I've muted the tab, could you add a 'mute site' button?
