Advertisers pulling because of swearing

Fuck me, MNHQ, is this true?

Top brands pull ads as Mumsnet users turn the air blue

I completely get brands not wanting to be associated with racism, sexism, disablism etc - all of which are rightly banned on MN. But are people that bothered by swearing?

Please tell me you're not going to ban swearing, MNHQ!

... I just noticed a "Mumsnet swears by" ad on my right Grin

Fekko · 19/08/2017 08:31

I know some very very wealthy people and have mixed with all sorts of rich folks for work. They can swear to put a docker to shame.

impostersyndrome · 19/08/2017 08:31

Rich does not equate to educated, necessarily.

impostersyndrome · 19/08/2017 08:32

Or intelligent.

Fekko · 19/08/2017 08:34

True. I've worked with traders, royalty and the very well educated. I think royalty are the sweariest though. Hmmm. Actually my grandma could put them all in the shade.

BankWadger · 19/08/2017 08:34

Ask Toyota to advertise here. They used bugger in a nationally run TV ad campaign in the late 1990s.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/08/2017 08:36

My dh swear words feature very naturally in his sentences. I come from a non swearing family who were all like that Shock for years after they first met him. He's much posher than we are though Grin

Esspee · 19/08/2017 08:37

I was shocked at the level of swearing when I joined Mumsnet but have become inured to it. Have noticed that the threads which attract the more intelligent members (e.g. the Listed building CFN thread which was a joy to watch evolve ) have very little gratuitous swearing (excluding the title of course Grin).

Fekko · 19/08/2017 08:40

I remember at my first board meeting in a city firm - oh, the swearing! It wasn't bad tempered or anything, just very sweaty.

I was 😵 at first then had to dive under the table to pick up a pretend dropped pen as I was trying not to laugh.

Fekko · 19/08/2017 08:41

Sweary, not sweaty. Rather fragrant actually!

Holy WANKBADGERs, why did I never make that link before? I wonder if HQ used that phrase on purpose?

(My phone insists on putting WANKBADGER in capitals. I don't know why but it does).

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 19/08/2017 08:46

I'd say things have toned down quite a bit since the early days, if anything...

Ifailed · 19/08/2017 08:48

Oh the irony. A Times article you can't read without paying on MN, which anyone can see for free. If you were an advertiser which site would you prefer?

BankWadger · 19/08/2017 08:49

I have clearly impressed your phone Empress 😂😂

BankWadger · 19/08/2017 08:50

(I see my own name so often I can't read wankbadger correctly anymore )

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 19/08/2017 08:53

BankWadger Grin

I've just learned the term OIKYWANK & it's making me happy. Apparently my phone thinks that merits capitals too.

mrsmuddlepies · 19/08/2017 08:55

I hate the sexist and horribly ageist posts. Ageism is against Mumsnet guidelines but it is rampant on here and even if reported is allowed to stay. Some posts are really distasteful and use sexist and ageist terms of abuse as a way of bullying other posters.

BankWadger · 19/08/2017 08:57

Oikywank has made my day too (my phone is less impressed though)

Oikywank oikywank oikywank oikywank

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 19/08/2017 08:58

Read my link upthread.

Lauralou69 · 19/08/2017 09:03

Are you kidding?? I came here from 'the other one' 😉 because of the swearing!! So much better to be able to express oneself with vulgarity.........

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 19/08/2017 09:04

Jus now I've hd fucking Talk Talk and Clarks Confused .

Onthehighseas · 19/08/2017 09:08

Not remotely fussed about the swearing on here, but agree entirely about the ageism. It's really offensive at times and nothing is done about it.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 19/08/2017 09:22

This worries me. I used to be an avid user of the Lonely Planet Thorntree forums (waves to any TTWT & YC graduates out there). When the BBC took it over, they closed down the whole thing, had a massive cull of all threads with swearing or topics they didn't like and refused to reopen some of the sections that were the most active on the site.

There was a mass exodus of regular posters and looking at the state of the forum now, it's unbelievably heavily moderated with nothing but sycophantic responses permitted and debate is shut down as not being in accordance with the rules.

The abandonment by advertisers shouldn't be an excuse for MN to bring in massive moderation.....

Lucysky2017 · 19/08/2017 09:40

I never swear but I am happy for people to say anything they like on line just about. It is censorship which is our enemy most of the time. Mrsm, I can live with the ageism.
I would just like more tolerance all round for people's different opinons when politely stated. Some people dislike me because I vote Conservative for example or think it is in most women's interests to work but we do need to ensure that people can express views even if they upset some people with very thin skins.

Lucysky2017 · 19/08/2017 09:41

..oops... is "thin skin" disablist? There is probably a condition of very very thin skin, like the "egg shell skull rule" in law... there I've blown it again.
