Advertisers pulling because of swearing

Fuck me, MNHQ, is this true?

Top brands pull ads as Mumsnet users turn the air blue

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/934464e8-844f-11e7-aad7-35a38ccd3007

I completely get brands not wanting to be associated with racism, sexism, disablism etc - all of which are rightly banned on MN. But are people that bothered by swearing?

Please tell me you're not going to ban swearing, MNHQ!

being sweary does not mean the swearer is less intelligent. being non sweary does not give you a higher IQ.
No, but swearing doesn't add any information, and is not acceptable in many places, so while i don't mind it too much, I don't really get why its so important to people as a mumsnet 'right'?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 19/08/2017 09:51

What I resent is advertisers laying down the law-"you be good girls and not be rude or we won't give you our pennies" MN is Sweary (boo sucks to those it offends) so if you don't like it off you trot.
Personally, I think advertisers should be proud to be on a site that supports, empowers and helps so many women.
(NT for me can bog off, but that's a different matter)

Fekko · 19/08/2017 09:51

My dad used to say that swearing was for those of limited vocabulary. To which we would cry in unison 'bollocks!' Poor dad, he tried...

TennisAtXmas · 19/08/2017 09:52

My adverts broke for a while the other day. I just had a tiny sad face on grey at the top. I enjoyed that time very much Grin

noblegiraffe · 19/08/2017 10:06

"The result showed that people who could name the most swear words within a minute also tend to score higher on an IQ test."

The TES forums died when they became heavily moderated.
MNHQ would have to decide whether swearing damages their brand.

They've said that they stop quite a lot of adverts from brands MNetters wouldn't approve of so I'm not sure how bothered they'd be about prudish advertisers.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 19/08/2017 10:18

Well given that most of newspapers get their stories from here and not from the site where it's all rainbows and unicorns. Those advertisers are missing a trick.

I do a lot of online shopping and many of times I've seen the stamp 'as voted best/tried etc by mumsnet'.

My FB full of swearing. Don't like it they can fuckoff, I swear in real life especially when ranting but know how to rein it in when in presence of the Queen.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 19/08/2017 10:20

Obviously they not researched site well as its not just mums that use this site

eurochick · 19/08/2017 10:25

I agree with the poster who suggested that it doesn't fit the 1950's view of women that most advertisers still seem to hold dear.

It has nothing to do with intelligence- I work in the City and some of the most intelligent people I have worked with have been the most foul-mouthed.

orlantina · 19/08/2017 10:27

But these same advertisers are more than happy to advertise in the Daily Mail?

Swearings bad but sexism, racism, homophobia, Islamophobia and promoting hate is ok?

Cognitive dissonance?

ButtHoleinOne · 19/08/2017 10:30

I don't get it. Mumsnet isn't the one swearing, the posters (in other words the consumers) are swearing. So we're not Offended by the association of swearing and their brand!

Pagwatch · 19/08/2017 10:30

Lucysky

..oops... is "thin skin" disablist? There is probably a condition of very very thin skin, like the "egg shell skull rule" in law... there I've blown it again."

Don't be a dick.

ButtHoleinOne · 19/08/2017 10:34

Also the National Trust really don't know their demographic if they want to not be associated with Mumsnet

Flyingflipflop · 19/08/2017 10:36

Depends whether you resent it enough to pay to use MN.

insancerre · 19/08/2017 10:49

I'm imagining the national trust staff living in fear of hordes of mners descending on them, acting and netting and scaring away the other customers

insancerre · 19/08/2017 10:49

Effing and jeffing
I hate my kindle

greendale17 · 19/08/2017 10:51

I don't see why some posters have to constantly use swear words- it is not needed

orlantina · 19/08/2017 10:52

I can't help but find it ironic that the National Trust has pulled adverts from Mumsnet because of women swearing but continues to advertise in the Daily Mail

PinkSquash · 19/08/2017 11:21

Why have the NT decided now that they don't want to associate with MN? Ive been here what feels like forever 10 years almost and it's always been sweary.

londonista · 19/08/2017 11:28

Just out of interest does everyone see the Fairy ad at the bottom of their threads?

ButtHoleinOne · 19/08/2017 11:32

The National Trust are constantly recommended on MN, biting the sweary hand that feeds it.

Pretty poor show if they are advertising with the Daily Mail still though Angry

ButtHoleinOne · 19/08/2017 11:33

Says who? If it's the word I'm thinking and feeling I'm going to use that word. I don't see any reason to self moderate because an adult can't have their eyes affronted by a bad word.

ButtHoleinOne · 19/08/2017 11:34

Also if it's good enough for Corbyn, Cameron, Clinton etc fuck the NT.

Fekko · 19/08/2017 11:37

I bet even the Pope says the odd swear word.

QueenMortificado · 19/08/2017 11:37

I don't recall ever having seen adverts from any of those named brands

orlantina · 19/08/2017 11:39

AIBU thread

I don't recall ever having seen adverts from any of those named brands

I've seen the NT trust ones for the Cadbury Easter Egg hunt Grin

(the ones that got the Daily Mail and Theresa May all worked up)
