Advertisers pulling because of swearing

Fuck me, MNHQ, is this true?

Top brands pull ads as Mumsnet users turn the air blue

I completely get brands not wanting to be associated with racism, sexism, disablism etc - all of which are rightly banned on MN. But are people that bothered by swearing?

Please tell me you're not going to ban swearing, MNHQ!

Not our problem! The advertisers should have done their research better. The non sweary lol Huns are over at netmums.

As an aside and inspired by this thread...I bet princess Di would have bloody loved Mumsnet Grin

Oh fuck of National Trust and the folks who think people who swear are of low intelligence need to take their head out of their chocolate starfish.

I swear in private, with friends and on sites I'm on. I was told last week by specialists who work in my field that I'm considered to be one of the top experts by several countries so anyone who thinks sweary folks are dim wits can bite my shiny metal arse.

National trust are a bunch of twunts if this is their opinion.

Next they'll be demanding we all wear twin sets, get back in the kitchen to make sandwiches for the men folk and not to use our pearls as love beads.

MN's strapline in FB has been "the one with the swearing" for as long as I can remember.

Swearing has always been permitted. The advertisers really should have known what they were choosing. If not, they should be asking hard questions of themselves (and/or the standards of the agency they chose). Not complaining because a site is exactly what it always said it was.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 19/08/2017 13:56

And anyone who feels that somehow swearing demeans posters-have a look over at the sweary thread. A nicer, more supportive bunch of posters you would be hard pressed to find.

gillybeanz · 19/08/2017 13:56

I can understand why the marketing execs don't like it, especially the NT.
Anybody who would see the adverts on here though must know it's a site that actively encourages swearing.

chelseahotel · 19/08/2017 13:57

They have adverts on here? I'd never noticed Shock

MusicToMyEars800 · 19/08/2017 13:59

I definitely agree, the support I've had from the fellow swearies has been amazing and so heart warming Smile

user9512736123 · 19/08/2017 14:01

I couldn't give a damn, I don't see any site adverts anyway so I wouldn't be seeing them regardless of whether there is swearing on the site. As for not liking swearing, well we are all adults so can ignore it if we want.

glenthebattleostrich · 19/08/2017 14:23

Better that I rant and say my MIL / DH / DD / person in front of me who is being a bit irritating when I have PMT / arsebadger who got the last bit of carrot cake which is the only cake I really wanted etc is being an arse or fucker and swear a bit on here than say to any of the listed people you are being a fucker.

MN has probably saved my relationship with several people because I can come and have a good sweary rant, be told to get a grip and then move on with my day.

Also, I don't like being told what I can and can't say. We have free speech and when respected organisations start to censor people it is terrifying state of affairs.

Viviennemary · 19/08/2017 14:27

I expect many people who love to use bad language on MN are the very ones who would correct little Tarquin or Persephone if they decided to do the same.

Another one here who doesn't see the adverts.
I used to feel bad about not turning off the ad blockers on this site, but seeing how many millions MN makes (and good luck to them!) I don't think they are going to miss my clicks.

PlinkyTheFairyWitch · 19/08/2017 15:34

My dad used to say that swearing was for those of limited vocabulary. To which we would cry in unison 'bollocks!'

Yay! Grin

I don't understand the limited vocabulary argument. I have an extensive vocabulary in two languages and swear like a trooper. So what? They're only words. The aristocracy swears, the working class swears, this objecting to swearing seems like a certain type of middle classery to me, one that is highly reminiscent of Hyacinth Bucket.

As an aside, according to Holy Shit (my favourite book on the history of swearing), humans have pretty much always sworn since time immemorial. It's funny what becomes unsayable when and why.

If MN censors swearing, it'd be so sanitised we may as well introduce glittery tickers. Ack.

ButtHoleinOne · 19/08/2017 15:41

Do the National Trust advertise in the Independent? Are they happy for their advertisements to appear next to links of "horribly aging celebrities"

I suspect it is more to do with the Penis Beaker demographic than the lightly placed middle class fucks and cunts.

fusspot66 · 19/08/2017 16:24

But it's only the sweary people that see the ads, not a case of people innocently enjoying the ads, when suddenly along come a load of sweary people.
I think those advertisers are courting publicity.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 19/08/2017 16:35

Well I'll stop using confused.com right now. They obviously don't want us sweaty, naughty, ladies anywhere near their site.Hmm.

I find their behaviour utterly pathetic and sexist.Angry

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 19/08/2017 16:36

Sweary NOT sweaty.

We are definitely not sweaty on MN

Saucery · 19/08/2017 16:37

Did you link confused . com, IfYou, or have MNHQ started that bloody silly automatic linking thing again?

chelseahotel · 19/08/2017 17:31

I often wonder how effective advertising can be because I genuinely don't notice ads. I used to do some surveys for MN and YouGov but they are all fixated on what ads you have noticed. None, ever.
