Advertisers pulling because of swearing

Fuck me, MNHQ, is this true?

Top brands pull ads as Mumsnet users turn the air blue

I completely get brands not wanting to be associated with racism, sexism, disablism etc - all of which are rightly banned on MN. But are people that bothered by swearing?

Please tell me you're not going to ban swearing, MNHQ!

I used to post on a forum where even Dick Cheney was automatically asterisked out.

I didn't last long there.

JustineMumsnet · 19/08/2017 19:43

Apologies for multiple apostrophe calamities - am typing from a train with dodge connection and couldn't bear to preview.

Actually I think that's fair enough.

noblegiraffe · 19/08/2017 19:49

chardonnay was it TES? They censored Scunthorpe!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 19/08/2017 19:54

No, MakeupAlley. Blush

I'm that shallow.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 19/08/2017 19:58

Hello Justine! How was your holiday?

Dina1234 · 19/08/2017 20:03

It's very odd, I'm not at all sure why they care. Posters are their audience after all, nothing more.

BankWadger · 19/08/2017 20:07

I would like to thank the Times and some sad sack journo for giving me a laugh and OikyWank today.

And without mn I'd never have come across the excellent "cockwomble".

Escapepeas · 19/08/2017 20:41

Hilarious. So women posting on MN are vilified for swearing, yet the Haymarket-owned Pistonheads censors all swear words but allows blatant racism, homophobia and misogyny. I don't see any journalists getting their knickers in a twist about that.

JustineMumsnet · 19/08/2017 20:43

@EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans

Hello Justine! How was your holiday?

Not too bad thanks - bit hot - got Lucifered in Sicily (but I realise that doesn't always illicit sympathy).

Sittinginthesun · 19/08/2017 21:00

Bet you're glad to be back, Justine .

You didn't miss much.Grin

So I hear Grin.

noblegiraffe · 19/08/2017 21:12

I can understand a journalist contacting the National Trust about swearing, but confused.com?!

I wonder if they contacted Martine McCutcheon. I can't imagine that Ms 'Where the fuck is my fucking coat?' would be that fussed Grin

Grin Cunting Sainsbury's made me happy today. MNers really knew how to swear back in the old days. Can you come up with a strapline that includes oikywank, twillop & twatcheese?

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 19/08/2017 21:38

Bulgari, the Italian fashion label, was angered after its marketing appeared alongside posts titled “I can’t f*ing do this any more” and “Is this wanky?”

Grin

I want to know what 'Is this wanky' was all about

Fekko · 19/08/2017 23:03

Some of my bestest swears are in Italian.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 19/08/2017 23:19

Oh, anch'io.

musicposy · 19/08/2017 23:44

Fluffypinkpyjamas I think the full title was "Is this wanky and would you come?" which is even better! At least one poster remarked on the words wanky and come in the same title. Grin

Was about a wedding anniversary party, sorry to disappoint.

musicposy · 19/08/2017 23:57

I was once on a forum where I couldn't write "Sussex". That panned out well (Hi, I'm from a county just below Surrey and East of Hampshire). I don't have time for crap like that.

Even worse are sites where you see the likes of f**k. We all know what it means, just write it and be done with.

LesbianBadger · 20/08/2017 00:08

I wonder how many companies who frown upon swearing advertise in the hate filled gutter press...

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 20/08/2017 02:36

Music ah thank you, oh yes I saw that thread and I also thought the come bit completed it nicely Grin

nina2b · 20/08/2017 09:36

I think the advertisers are quite correct. The swearing by certain types of users is childish and impresses few.

nina2b · 20/08/2017 09:41

Even if it is a "non-story", the point stands. The swearing and vulgarity are going to affect advertising revenue. Better think more seriously about biting the hand that feeds you, mumsnet.

Confused

Mumsnet has been around (and swearing) for over ten years. So it clearly isnt going to affect revenue. Name a major politician who hasn't done Mumsnet recently? They're not stupid enough to overlook a large intelligent, engaged group of women. I doubt the advertisers are would either.
